Opis:
Measurements of boiling heat transfer coefficients in water, methanol and refrigerant R141b are reported for the bundles of smooth tubes that represent a portion of a flooded-type evaporator. Each bundle contained 19 instrumented, electrically heated tubes in a staggered triangular-pitch layout. The effect of heat flux, tube pitch and operating pressure is studied in the paper. Bundle factor and bundle effect are discussed as well. A correlation for prediction of a bundle average heat transfer coefficient is proposed.

Opis:
Complex microstructure analysis of TiN/Ti/a-C:H multilayer coatings, subjected to mechanical and biological tests, were performed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM), respectively. Influence of interface numbers and phase ratios on coating properties was studied. Thin films were fabricated by a hybrid PLD technique (PLD supported by magnetron sputtering). The a-C:H phase was characterized by an amorphous structure, while TiN was built of columnar crystallites. Multilayer coatings contained sequentially deposited TiN and a-C:H layers with thin metallic Ti inter- layers deposited at each interface. Mechanisms of mechanical wear of analyzed systems were presented focusing on the cracking propagation revealed in the scratch test. Biological tests were done basing on smooth muscle cells adhesion to coating surfaces. An increase of TiN phase in the coating led to improvement of mechanical properties, while the carbon phase improved the biological behavior. Coatings comprising a higher rate of the carbon (a-C:H) revealed brittleness and were prone to delaminating. Optimal properties from the mechanical and biological point of view were stated for 8xTiN/Ti/a-C:H coating with 1:1 phase ratio (TiN to a-C:H).

Opis:
This paper presents a simulation study of the simultaneous reconstruction of the non-smooth strain distribution of an optical fiber Bragg grating and its temperature, which is based on the reflection spectrum of the reflected beam of the grating. The transition matrix method was used to model the reflection spectrum of the grating, and the nonlinear NelderMead optimization method was used to simultaneously reconstruct the strain distribution along the grating and its temperature. The results of simulations of simultaneous reconstruction of the strain profile and temperature indicate good accord with the strain profiles and temperature set. The reconstruction errors of the strain profiles are less than 1.2 percent and the temperature change errors are less than 0.2 percent, with a noise level of 5 percent.

Opis:
The method for the selection of a calculation scheme for the evaluation of the flow behaviour of labyrinth seal with one straight fin, against smooth wall, was presented. Experimental results were obtained from measurement data carried out on the in house, vacuum test section. The advantage of the test rig is a circular shape of the labyrinth specimen, providing similar shape to configuration operated in practise. In computational fluid dynamics study different types of mesh resolution were tested, with variable volume discretization in the area of a labyrinth fin tip. Moreover, a wide range of turbulence models basing on k-ε and k-ω, exploiting the (Reynolds Average Navier Stokes) scheme, for the flow pattern evaluation, were examined. All obtained results were compared with literature data, covering research conducted on similar configurations. The presented study shows challenges as well as the possibilities of calculation simplification and compares results obtained by means of simulations and experiment. The proposed method is characterised by excellent agreement of computational results with experiment data.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to model daily returns of the WIG20 index. The idea is to consider a model that explicitly takes changes in the amplitude of the clusters of volatility into account. This variation is modelled by a positive-valued deterministic component. A novelty in specification of the model is that the deterministic component is specified before estimating the multiplicative conditional variance component. The resulting model is subjected to misspecification tests and its forecasting performance is compared with that of commonly applied models of conditional heteroskedasticit

In this paper, a stabilizer dedicated for a unicycle-like robot is considered. The proposed smooth control law ensures the global boundedness of position and orientation trajectories to a neighbourhood of the desired point with an arbitrarily selected radius and it is robust to bounded additive measurement noises. The controller consists of a smooth hybrid navigation algorithm and a smooth feedback based on the transverse function approach. The stability proof, simulation and experimental results illustrating properties of the algorithm are discussed.

Opis:
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian formula-based non-grid computational method for simulating fluid flows, solid deformation, and fluid structured systems. SPH is a method widely applied in many fields of science and engineering, especially in the field of materials science. It solves complex physical deformation and flow problems. This paper provides a basic overview of the application of the SPH method in metal processing. This is a very useful simulation method for reconstructing flow patterns, solidification, and predicting defects, limitations, or material destruction that occur during deformation. The main purpose of this review article is to give readers better understanding of the SPH method and show its strengths and weaknesses. Studying and promoting the advantages and overcoming the shortcomings of the SPH method will help making great strides in simulation modeling techniques. It can be effectively applied in training as well as for industrial purposes.
