Opis:
An optimized method of vibration Energy Harvesting is based on a step-down transformer that regulates the power flow from the piezoelectric element to the desired electronic load. Taking into account parameters of the whole system, the “optimal” voltage gain the piezoelectric transformer can be determined where the harvested power is maximized for the actual level of mechanical excitation. Consequently the piezoelectric transformers can be used to boost up the conversion of mechanical strain into electrical power with considerable potential in Energy Harvesting applications. Nowadays however, the most important factor is usage of lead free material for its construction. Additional desired parameters of such ceramics include high value of piezoelectric coefficients, low dielectric losses and reasonable power density. This work for first time proposes a lead free K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) material implementation for stack type of piezoelectric transformer that is designed for load efficiency optimization of vibration energy harvester.

In vibration control with piezoceramics, a high coupling of the piezoelement with the structure is desired. A high coupling improves the damping performance of passive techniques like shunt damping. The coupling can be influenced by a the material properties of the piezoceramics, but also by the placement within the structure and the size of the transducer. Detailed knowlegde about the vibration behavior of the structure is required for this. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the optimal shape of piezoelectric elements. General results for one-dimensional, but inhomogeneos strain distribution are provided. These results are applied to the case of a longitudinal transducer and a bending bimorph. It is obtained that for maximum coupling, only a certain fracture of the volume should be made of piezoelectric material. . .

Opis:
Effects of La3+ admixture in barium lanthanum titanate (BLT) ceramics system with colossal permittivity on performance of prospective piezoelectric cold plasma application were studied. Usage of cold atmospheric pressure plasma appears promising in terms of industrial and healthcare applications. Performed investigation provide consistent evaluation of doping lanthanum amount on piezoelectric coefficients values with simultaneous capability of charge accumulation for effective plasma generation. Modification of ferroelectric materials with heterovalent ions, however with the lower radii than the original atoms, significantly affects their domain mobility and consequently electromechanical properties. To determine the piezoelectric coefficients, the resonanceantiresonance method was implemented, and values of piezoelectric and dielectric parameters were recorded. Finally the results indicated that addition of 0.4 mol.% of La3+ ions to the ceramic structure maximally increased the values of piezoelectric coefficient to d33 = 20 pC/N and to huge dielectric constant to ε33 T = 29277.

Opis:
Beams with rectangular cross-section, with large length-to-width ratio, can be excited to torsional vibrations. If the piezoelectric elements are mounted to the beam in pairs at the same cross-section with two separated elements positioned on the same side of the beam, and the voltages applied to them are in the opposite phase, they produce twisting moments which can be applied to reduce the torsional vibrations. Results of FEM simulations are presented and analysed in the paper. All analyses are performed for a steel free-clamped beam. The piezoelectric elements made of PZT material are mounted in pairs on one side of the beam. The analyses are done for separated natural modes.

In this work the design aspects of a piezoelectric-based resonance ceramic pressure sensor made using low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology and designed for high-temperature applications is presented. The basic pressure-sensor structure consists of a circular, edge-clamped, deformable diaphragm that is bonded to a ring, which is part of the rigid ceramic structure. The resonance pressure sensor has an additional element – a piezoelectric actuator – for stimulating oscillation of the diaphragm in the resonance-frequency mode. The natural resonance frequency is dependent on the diaphragm construction (i.e., its materials and geometry) and on the actuator. This resonance frequency then changes due to the static deflection of the diaphragm caused by the applied pressure. The frequency shift is used as the output signal of the piezoelectric resonance pressure sensor and makes it possible to measure the static pressure. The characteristics of the pressure sensor also depend on the temperature, i.e., the temperature affects both the ceramic structure (its material and geometry) and the properties of the actuator. This work is focused on the ceramic structure, while the actuator will be investigated later.

Opis:
Effectiveness of operation of a weapon stabilization system is largely dependent on the choice of a sensor, i.e. an accelerometer. The paper identifies and examines fundamental errors of piezoelectric accelerometers and offers measures for their reduction. Errors of a weapon stabilizer piezoelectric sensor have been calculated. The instrumental measurement error does not exceed 0.1 × 10−5 m/s2. The errors caused by the method of attachment to the base, different noise sources and zero point drift can be mitigated by the design features of piezoelectric sensors used in weapon stabilizers.

Opis:
Electrocaloric (EC) structures for a new generation of cooling or heating elements utilize the temperature dependence of spontaneous polarization in some ferroelectric materials to convert waste heat into electricity and vice versa. A (Pb0.93La0.07) (Zr0.65Ti0.35)O3 material, have the largest recorded pyroelectric coefficient. An effective predicted form for such applications is fiber, due to small heat capacitance and quick response time, even for nano second laser excitation. Consequently, the presented work provides a description of the optimization of structural, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of obtained fibers, finally concluding on necessity of sintering temperature reduction in 100°C in contrast to bulk form to effectively prevent its destruction.

The paper presents application of a modified, symmetrical Bouc-Wen model to simulate the mechanical behaviour of high-frequency piezoelectric actuators (PAs). In order to identify parameters of the model, a two-step algorithm was developed. In its first stage, the mechanical parameters were identified by taking into account their bilinear variability and using a square input voltage waveform. In the second step, the hysteresis parameters were determined based on a periodic excitation. Additionally, in order to reduce the influence of measurement errors in determination of selected derivatives the continuum wavelet transform (CWT) and translation-rotation transformation (TRT) methods were applied. The results proved that the modified symmetrical Bouc-Wen model is able to describe the mechanical behaviour of PAs across a wide frequency range.

The presented paper concerns a novel concept of hybrid piezoelectric motor based on electroactive lubrication principle. Its structure is combined of quasi-static and resonance piezoelectric actuators, synchronizing their work to generate the rotary movement. The hybrid motor topology is compared to the existing piezoelectric motors, regarding its field of applications in embedded systems with very high security requirements. The electroactive lubrication principle is briefly presented with regards to optimization of the hybrid motor. The performance principle of the hybrid motor is described in terms of its working cycle. The assembling process of the prototype hybrid motor is briefly explained with emphasis put on the frequency and impedance tuning of the applied quasi-static and resonance piezoelectric actuators. Next, the hybrid motor power supply system is described and chosen measured performance characteristics are presented. Finally, conclusions concerning the features of the tested prototype hybrid motor and possible solutions of the faced issues, during assembling and testing, are presented.

Investigations on the influence of the PbTiO3 content on the crystalline and domain structure of PZT-based four-component solid solutions have been performed. It has been shown that there is a close relation between the structure and temperature stability of the resonance frequency (fr) of the fabricated piezoceramic transducers. Better and more stable results have been obtained by doping and modifying the basic chemical composition obtaining Pb(Zr1-x Tix)O3. The compositions with minimal Δ fr / fr, within the temperature range T = 213–358 K (in relation to room temperature Tr = 293 K), exhibited (i) the smallest internal friction (Q-1m), (ii) the highest mechanical quality (Qm), (iii) high values of spontaneous deformation of the elementary cell (δT and δRe), (iv) the complex a-c-domain structure in the tetragonal phase (T) and the simple domain structure in the rhombohedral phase (Re). The practical result of the present work was the fabrication of piezoceramic electric band filters exhibiting Δ fr / fr < 0.2% and a high mechanical quality factor (Qm = 3225).

Opis:
Using intelligent materials and sensors to monitor the safety of concrete structures is a hot topic in the field of civil engineering. In order to realize the omni-directional monitoring of concrete structural damage, the authors of this paper designed and fabricated an embedded annular piezoelectric ultrasonic sensor using the annular piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic as a sensing element and epoxy resin as the matching and the backing layers. The influence of different matching and backing layers thickness on the acoustic characteristic parameters of the sensor were studied. The results show that the resonant frequency corresponding to the axial mode of annular piezoelectric ceramics moves toward the high frequency direction with the decrease of the height of piezoelectric ceramics, and the radial vibration mode increases as well as the impedance peak. With the thickness of the backing layer increases from 1 mm to 2 mm, the radial resolution of the annular piezoelectric ultrasonic sensor is enhanced, the pulse width is reduced by 39% comparing with the sensors which backing layer is 1 mm, and the head wave amplitude and −3 dB bandwidth are increased by 61% and 66%, respectively. When the matching layer thickness is 3 mm, the sensor has the highest amplitude response of 269 mV and higher sensitivity.

The piezoelectric unimorphs are essential resonant components of many oscillating systems including electroacoustic devices. The unimorph spectral properties are namely dependent on geometric dimensions, applied materials and mounting. Preliminary dimensioning and optimization of unimorph shape are usually carried out prior to comprehensive design work mostly based on finite element method. Simple analytical model is a suitable tool for initial design phase. This paper presents a derivation of calculation model describing natural vibrations of a circular unimorph with the piezoelectric layer diameter smaller than the elastic layer diameter. The system of equations with closed-form solution is instrumental to calculation of resonant frequencies and mode shapes for unimorphs with clamped, simply supported and free circumference. The theoretical results are compared with vibration velocity measurement of clamped unimorph sample in a wide frequency range. Analytical model derived in this paper is used to assess the effect of the thickness tolerance on unimorph resonant frequencies.

Considering the low accuracy and low efficiency of the traditional calibration method for base strain sensitivity of accelerometers, a novel base strain sensitivity calibration system with steady harmonic excitation is proposed. The required cantilever beam for calibration is driven by an electromagnetic exciter to generate a base strain varying in a steady harmonic pattern. By applying a Wheatstone bridge circuit, the generated strain with low distortion can be measured. The measurement system with a compensation function can automatically calibrate the base strain sensitivity. The amplitude linearity and frequency response characteristics of the base strain sensitivity in two accelerometers are obtained experimentally, and the uncertainty in the results is 2% ( = 2).

Opis:
Modern electronic devices development steady trends toward miniaturization and multifunctionality. The application of such advanced devices is often realised by superimposing two different effects. In recent years, there was great interest shown in multiferroic materials in form laminated heterostructures taking advantage of mentioned superposition. In these stacked structured electric and magnetic properties are strain coupled leading to the possibility of controlling either magnetic polarization by application of electric fields or electric polarization by means of applied magnetic fields. In this paper novel construction of piezoelectric transformer was proposed with electric current induced magnetic field generation, without any coil or wires. This magnetoelectric laminate Piezoelectric Transformer from one layers of investigated piezoelectric material and second layer of commercial magnetostrictor was fabricated. This construction exhibits many interesting and unusual piezomagnetic properties and a demonstration of output voltage gain controlling via the application of magnetic field across the new heterostructure is presented.
Rozwojowi nowoczesnych urządzeń elektronicznych nierozłącznie towarzyszy dążenie do ich miniaturyzacji. W przypadku obecności uzwojeń w takich aplikacjach, trend ten to przejawia się w ich eliminacji poprzez zastosowanie nowych rodzajów przekształcania energii. W artykule została przedstawiona i przetestowana praktycznie nowa konstrukcja transformatora piezoelektrycznego, również realizującego funkcje inteligentnego czujnika pola magnetycznego, generujacego napięcie wyjściowe proporcjonalne do natężenia tego pola. Zastosowano strukture wykorzystujaca materiał magnetostrykcyjny w podwójnej funkcji, do przewodzenia prądu i wytwarzania drgań mechanicznych, co pozwoli na polepszenie parametrów przetwarzania energii (m.in. małe straty układu, mały pobór mocy), zapewniając w ten sposób prosty sposób sterowania układem oraz obniżenie kosztów produkcji. Drugim celem tego artykułu jest dobór efektywnego materiału piezoelektrycznego do zastosowanie w sekcji wyjściowej proponowanej konstrukcji i finalne sprawdzenie jego działania.

In this work, an approach to the design of broadband thickness-mode piezoelectric transducer is presented. In this approach, simulation of discrete time model of the impulse response of matched and backed piezoelectric transducer is used to design high sensitivity, broad bandwidth, and short-duration impulse response transducers. The effect of matching the performance of transmitting and receiving air backed PZT-5A transducer working into water load is studied. The optimum acoustical characteristics of the quarter wavelength matching layers are determined by a compromise between sensitivity and pulse duration. The thickness of bonding layers is smaller than that of the quarter wavelength matching layers so that they do not change the resonance peak significantly. Our calculations show that the −3 dB air backed transducer bandwidth can be improved considerably by using quarter wavelength matching layers. The computer model developed in this work to predict the behavior of multilayer structures driven by a transient waveform agrees well with measured results. Furthermore, the advantage of this this model over other approaches is that the time signal for optimum set of matching layers can be predicted rapidly.
