    Opis:
    This article analyzes the poetic imagery of the bilingual, Polish-German, author Piotr (Peter) Lachmann. The key images of his poems bring into focus the problem of keeping up the ties between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Lachmann’s term for this kind of remembrance, made possible by the abundance of pictorial records (photography, fi lm) that transcend the linear axis of time, is ‘sepulchral humanism’. While examining the relations between sacrum and profanum in Lachmann’s verse, the article also notes their contamination by depictions that draw on the aesthetics of disgust and ugliness. Finally, the article discusses the German themes in Lachmann’s poetry and his intellectual bond with Tadeusz Różewicz, a poet and playwright with a better understanding of German culture than most Polish writers of his (post-war) generation.

    Opis:
    After introducing basic concepts of: social relations, individualistic macro-sociology and ethnicity, the author analyzes in great detail Peter M. Blau's theory of intergroup relations and Hubert M. Blalock's idea of ethnic relations. Both of these theories are very important for macro-sociology of social relations and hardly known in this context in Poland. In both cases the author stresses the ethnic aspect of these theories and, in the end, discusses the significance of the 'interactive' approach in sociology of ethnicity, and perhaps in the whole 'macro-sociology of social relations'. The problem of relations between interactions among individual actors on the one hand and large collectivities and relations among them on the on the other is also addressed briefly.
    Zadania tego tekstu są następujące. Wprowadzam podstawowe pojęcia: stosunków społecznych, indywidualistycznej makrosocjologii oraz etniczności. Omawiam teorię stosunków międzygrupowych autorstwa Petera M. Blaua i przedstawiam koncepcję zaproponowaną przez Huberta M. Blalocka. Szczegółowość omówień uzasadniam tym, że są to moim zdaniem wizje bardzo ważne, a praktycznie nieznane polskim czytelnikom. W obu przypadkach akcentuję oczywiście etniczny aspekt koncepcji. Ostatni rozdział podsumowuje wcześniejsze rozważania i wskazuje na znaczenie interakcyjnego podejścia w socjologii etniczności, a może i całej "makrosocjologii stosunków społecznych". Omawiam tu też w zarysie problematykę związków między indywidualnymi interakcjami a wielkimi zbiorowościami i relacjami między nimi. Czynię tak z uwagi na znaczenie tego zagadnienia dla wcześniej przedstawionych koncepcji Blaua i Blalocka.

    Claude Carloman de Rulhière was a French diplomat and writer who was sent to Russia in 1762 as a secretary to the French ambassador. During his stay in St. Petersburg, he eye-witnessed the coup d’état staged by the future Catherine II to dethrone Peter III and to seize the imperial power. Upon his return to Paris, Rulhière publicized his testimony of the event. It soon became notorious and provoked controversy, splitting French elites into supporters and detractors of Catherine II. The agents of the empress attempted to persuade him not to divulge his text, but Rulhière did not succumb to their financial offers and resolved to reveal the truth.
    Claude Carloman de Rulhière był francuskim dyplomatą i pisarzem. W 1762 wyjechał do Rosji jako sekretarz ambasadora Francji. W czasie pobytu w Petersburgu był świadkiem zamachu stanu zorganizowanego przez Katarzynę II, by zdetronizować Piotra III i przejąć władzę. Po powrocie do Paryża upublicznił swoje świadectwo tego wydarzenia, które wkrótce zyskało sławę i wzbudziło liczne kontrowersje, dzieląc francuskie elity na zwolenników i przeciwników Katarzyny II. Agenci carycy usiłowali nakłonić go, by przestał rozpowszechniać swój tekst, ale Rulhière nie uległ ich finansowym ofertom i postanowił ujawnić prawdę.

    Peter Brook is one of the few contemporary theatre artists who are deeply conscious of the connection between aesthetics and ethics. He treats the art of theatre as a medium capable of sharpening perceptions and awakening the spiritual sensitivity of the spectator, as well as promulgating the human sensation of reciprocal belonging. Brook’s production of The Tragedy of Hamlet, which testifies to the conformity of the English director’s practice with his theory, is interpreted in light of Brook’s conception of theatre and culture - a conception arising from his conviction about the existence of a common, universal space of anthropological experience.

    This article attempts to throw some light on what may be called Poland’s new national-identity literature and its leading fi gures, Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz, Wojciech Wencel and Przemysław Dakowicz. They see their work as a psychopolitical educational tool in the service of a patriotic mission to reactivate the ‘real’ national identity. They believe that such an identity is necessary for individuals to develop strong personal identities, founded on a sense of belonging to an integral national community. Rymkiewicz, Wencel and Dakowicz champion this, somewhat archaic, model of national identity which claims total commitment from its members in virtually all their writings. This article focuses on the rhetorical devices used by the new national-identity literature to present and promote its key concept, especially the idea of a ‘sublime’ ethnic community, or a sentimentalized vision of a Polish Commonwealth.

    In the play 11 & 12, based on Amadou Hampate Bâ’s story A Spirit of Tolerance: TheInspiring Life of Tierno Bokara, Peter Brook has used a narration about the past to confront the problems of the contemporary world and the nature of inter-human conflicts. In the mosaic form of the performance he has combined reference to the Elizabethan theatre and the African griot tradition with inter-cultural exploration and Japanese essentialist minimalism. He has intensified the Platonic principle of nature’s duality, which was familiar to the Elizabethans, by confronting it with the Sufi tradition and weaving it into the performance’s structure and spatial construction. The sense of sight (in the physical and spiritual sense) and the proper way of seeing, as well as the related experience of (spiritual) light, which are made into themes of 11 & 12, are indicators of the play’s evangelical message.

    The author reflects on the social divisions that — as sociologists have long predicted — can presently be observed in Poland. The author sees the source of the phenomenon in the mechanism of relative deprivation, which leads to disappointed expectations, or to people’s assessment of their own social or material situation as being worse in comparison to a reference group such as their contemporaries, neighbors, an elite, or a ruling class. Such a situation creates anger — here the author reaches for Sloterdijk’s concept — which is accumulated in “anger banks,” that is, in organizations or milieus that thrive on that anger. In the author’s opinion, this is the nature of the current Polish political scene. What is involved is the collective defense of individual and group dignity. The broad support accorded PiS (the Law and Justice party) in the 2015 elections should be analyzed in terms of the reacquisition of dignity by those who have been overlooked. However, the operating mode of the anger banks means that what previously occurred by omission and deafness is presently taking on the dangerous form of insulting and stigmatizing those who think differently. The author concludes that what is needed today, by all sides of the conflict, is a lesson in self-respect and respect for one’s opponents, the reconstruction of social relations within the community, and learning how to listen to and respect the opinion of adversaries.

    This text is devoted to the problem of the concept of mass in the social sciences. The departure point is a proposed division — on the basis of past works — into practical mass (the quantitative aspect of collective behaviors) and abstract mass, which is an ideological construct. Mass in the second meaning has five properties: meaning, durability, intangibility, subjectivity, and mystique. The political history of abstract mass is described, beginning from the moment of its appearance in contrast to the ruling elite and ending with the pop culture aspect. Theoreticians on the subject are referenced, in particular, Peter Sloterdijk. Then the author concentrates on how mass functions in contemporary political systems and societies (which are born of mass). He considers mass behavior, that is, those behaviors in which the participants have the consciousness of the meaning and strength of the abstract mass. He proposes a division of mass behaviors into proliferating, functional, and phantom actions. He asks whether mass today, in order to obtain a political voice, must still have a real quantitative force, or whether even the actions of an individual could acquire a mass character.
