Opis:
Digital photoelasticity is an important optical metrology follow-up for stress and strain analysis using full-field digital photographic images. Advances in digital image processing, data acquisition, procedures for pattern recognition and storage capacity enable the use of the computer-aided technique in automation and facilitate improvement of the digital photoelastic technique. The objective of this research is to find new equations for a novel phase-shifting method in digital photoelasticity. Some innovations are proposed. In terms of phaseshifting, only the analyzer is rotated, and the other equations are deduced by applying a new numerical technique instead of the usual algebraic techniques. This approach can be used to calculate a larger sequence of images. Each image represents a pattern and a measurement of the stresses present in the object. A decrease in the mean errors was obtained by increasing the number of observations. A reduction in the difference between the theoretical and experimental values of stresses was obtained by increasing the number of images in the equations for calculating phase. Every photographic image has errors and random noise, but the uncertainties due to these effects can be reduced with a larger number of observations. The proposed method with many images and high accuracy is a good alternative to the photoelastic techniques.

Opis:
Digital metrology was applied for evaluate 3D models of the unique skull of a fossil tetrapod, Madygenerpeton pustulatum, generated using various 3D digitization methods. The skull surface is covered by minute tubercles making it challenging for digitization with appropriate accuracy. Uniqueness and fragility of the specimen preclude the use of tactile measuring systems for creating a standardized reference model. To overcome this problem, comparative analysis of the triangulated models generated from the clouds of points obtained with seven different devices was conducted using the Geomagic Studio and Autodesk PowerShape CAD software. In the proposed approach, geometrically and dimensionally closest-fitting models underwent detailed statistical analysis between surface polygons in three steps. First, 3D models obtained from different scanning methods were compared with each other in couples. Next, statistical analysis of the differences between the coupled models was performed. Finally, a rating list of the models related to the required accuracy was prepared. The proposed approach is applicable to any other scanned object, especially in palaeontological applications, where each object is unique and exhibits individual features.

The objective of the investigation was to identify surface roughness after turning with wedges of coated sintered carbide. The investigation included predicting the average surface roughness in the dry machining of Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS) and the determination of load curves together with roughness profiles for various cutting conditions. The load curves and roughness profiles for various cutting wedges and variable cutting parameters were compared. It has been shown that dry cutting leads to a decrease in friction for lubricated surfaces, providing a small initial contact area where the surface is contacted. The study has been performed within a production facility during the production of electric motor parts and deep-well pumps.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a metrological analysis of the additively manufactured (AM) copies of a complex geometrical object, namely the fossil skull of Madygenerpeton pustulatum. This fossil represents the unique remains of an extinct “reptiliomorph amphibian” of high importance for palaeontological science. For this research, the surface was scanned and twelve different copies were 3D-printed using various devices, materials, and AM techniques. The same digitized model was used as a reference to compare with the surfaces obtained by Mitutoyo Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) CRYSTA-Apex S 9166 for each copy. The fidelity of the copies was assessed through statistical analysis of the distances between compared surfaces. The methodology provided a good background for the choice of the most accurate copies and the elimination of the less accurate ones. The proposed approach can be applied to any object of complex geometry when reproduction accuracy is to be assessed.

Opis:
Two different barite ore (barium sulfate BaSO4) specimens from different localizations were tested and described in this paper. Analysis of the microstructure was performed on polished sections, and on thin sections using X-ray microtomography (micro-CT), and optical microscopy (MO). Microtomography allowed obtaining three-dimensional images of the barite aggregate specimens. In the tomograms, the spatial distribution of the other polluting phases, empty space as well as cracks, pores, and voids – that exceeded ten micrometers of diameter-were possible to visualize. Also, the micro-CT allowed distinguishing between minerals of different density, like SiO2 and BaSO4. Images obtained and analyzed on thin sections with various methods using the optical microscopy in transmitted light delivered additional information on the aggregate microstructure, i.e. allow for estimation of the different kinds of inclusions (like the different density of the minerals) in the investigated specimens. Above methods, which were used in the tests, completed each another in order to supply a set of information on inclusions’ distribution and to present the important differences of the barite aggregate specimens microstructure.

Opis:
The precise location of the needle tip is critical in robot-assisted needle-based percutaneous interventions. An automatic needle tip measuring system based on binocular vision technology with the advantages of non-contact, excellent accuracy and high stability is designed and evaluated. First the measurement requirements of the prostate intervention robot are introduced. A laser interferometer is used as the reference for measuring the position of the needle tip whose relative position variation is described as the needle tip distance in the time domain. The parameters of the binocular cameras are obtained by Zhang’s calibration method. Then a robust needle tip extraction algorithm is specially designed to detect the pixel coordinates of the needle tip without installing the marked points. Once the binocular cameras have completed the stereo matching, the 3D coordinates of the needle tip are estimated. The measurement capability analysis (MCA) is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. The accuracy of the system can be controlled within 0.3621 mm. The agreement analysis is conducted by the Bland-Altman analysis, and the Pearson correlation coefficient is 0.999847. The P/T ratio value is 16.42% in the repeatability analysis. The results indicate that the accuracy and stability of the binocular vision needle tip measuring system are adequate to meet the requirement for the needle tip measurement in percutaneous interventions.

Opis:
In this paper the authors propose a decision support system for automatic blood smear analysis based onmicroscopic images. The images are pre-processed in order to remove irrelevant elements and to enhancethe most important ones – the healthy blood cells (erythrocytes) and the pathologic ones (echinocytes). The separated blood cells are analysed in terms of their most important features by the eigenfaces method. The features are the basis for designing the neural network classifier, learned to distinguish between erythrocytes and echinocytes. As the result, the proposed system is able to analyse the smear blood images in a fully automatic way and to deliver information on the number and statistics of the red blood cells, both healthy and pathologic. The system was examined in two case studies, involving the canine and human blood, and then consulted with the experienced medicine specialists. The accuracy of classification of red blood cells into erythrocytes and echinocytes reaches 96%.

Opis:
The paper presents methodology of increasing the accuracy of models of gears made applying additive methods. As a part of activities related to this subject, it was necessary to develop 3D-CAD research gears, which were the basis for producing physical models made using incremental FDM manufacturing technology. The created models were verified in order to determine the accuracy of resulting geometry. Then modifications were introduced to models so as to increase their accuracy. On this basis, in an iterative process, compensation coefficients were calculated to ensure reduction of defects in geometry with respect to a nominal 3D-CAD model.
W artykule przedstawiono sposób poprawy dokładności modeli kół zębatych wytwarzanych z zastosowaniem metod addytywnych. Opracowano model 3D-CAD badawczych kół zębatych. Stanowiły podstawę do wytworzenia modeli fizycznych wykonywanych z zastosowaniem przyrostowej techniki wytwarzania FDM.
