Objectives: The aim of study was to investigate the association between anxiety, depression, stress and determinants of quality of life among Iranian students. Methods: The questionnaires were completed by 275 students. The random sampling was conducted in two phases, the stratified sampling which some classes were selected among different classes of faculty of health and at the second phase, in each class the number of students who had the requirements to enter in the study were selected randomly. the logistic regression to find out the association between demographic characteristics with the quality of life was run and according to the normality status of the distribution of data the parametric or non-parametric tests were used. Results: In the univariable model, the students that were living in their own homes had the odds of 2.18 times more than the others to have a higher quality of life level (95% CI: 1.07–4.45). In the multi variable model the anxiety and stress were significantly related to the quality of life and for increasing each 1 unit in the amount of anxiety and stress the odds of a better quality of life decreases 0.19 and 0.03 respectively. Even after adjusting for other covariates – in the multivariable model – both anxiety and stress were associated with the quality of life. Conclusion: It is useful for the universities to understand different aspects of the students’ lives which are under the influence of stress, anxiety and depression, and also determining the resources from which they are originated.

The following article is the third publication presenting the results of a study concerning the professional activity of handicapped people (see: „Nauka” 1/2008 and „Nauka” 2/2008). The purpose of this part of the research was to determine whether there is a relationship between professional status, life satisfaction, and various personal competencies among handicapped people. Apart from this, we also wanted to establish what conditions personal competencies by focusing on social-demographic factors and disability characteristics. The tested competencies were isolated from the administered questionnaire using a factor analysis. Seven factors were found: locus of control, level of aspiration, potential for development, effort invested in development, impulsiveness, stamina, and mood. Analysis of the results leads to the following conclusions: (1) personal competencies are significantly related to professional activity for handicapped people, as is level of life satisfaction, (2) personal competencies are related to external factors shaping the development of handicapped people, such as: dwelling, gender, level of disability, and type of disability.

The aim of the study presented was to verify empirically a conception of workaholism as a multidimensional syndrome. The study also investigated the notion of ‘functional’ and ‘dysfunctional’ types of workaholic, on the basis of the participants’ cognitive evaluations of their quality of life. The research group comprised Polish managers who had graduated with, or were studying to attain, a Master’s degree in Business Administration. The 137 participants completed a set of questionnaires that were based on five different research tools. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the theory that workaholism has a three-dimensional structure that includes behavioural, cognitive, and affective dimensions. Using cluster analysis, three types of worker were identified, two of which represented types of workaholic with different scores for the dimensions of workaholism and for aspects of quality of life. The research demonstrated that workaholism is a three-dimensional construct. It enabled the integration of different perspectives and also confirmed that dysfunctional and functional types of workaholic exist. Furthermore, this paper provides practical insights about workaholism for practitioners of human resources that can be used in the selection and evaluation of employees.

Purpose: In this article we apply the age perspective to assess the quality of life (QoL) of persons with disabilities. Using a single measurement tool, we compare age profiles in the quality of life of persons with disabilities to the population without disabilities. By doing so, we examine whether the general patterns (such as U-shaped profile) are observed also among the population with disabilities, hence assessing how heterogenous this group is. Methods: We have constructed a multidimensional measurement model identifying overall and nine dimensions of the quality of life using structural equation modelling. The model conceptually is based on the Eurostat guidelines. All analyses are based on EU-SILC survey data, carried out in Poland in 2015. Results: The quality of life for both groups has inverse, right-skewed U-shape. The maximum value is achieved for the age group of 30–34 and after this threshold a constant decline is observed. The QoL scores for the population with disabilities are obviously significantly lower. Additionally, they are more heterogenous, and with greater variation between men and women. In a majority of the domains we also observe lower scores for persons with disabilities. However, people with disabilities are similarly diversified by age as persons without disabilities. Conclusion: Our study suggests that people with disabilities are similarly diversified by age as persons without disabilities. Therefore, disability means something different for younger and older persons and this difference is reflected in their quality of life. It means that public policy for persons with disabilities should also be diversified, avoiding ‘one-for-all’ policy.

Providing informal care to adults, especially elderly people, may affect many aspects of caregivers’ life, such as: physical and mental health, financial situation, social contacts, etc. Supporting dependent seniors is associated to a higher level of stress, burden and depression as well as higher mortality. The main purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between caregiving for adults and the subjective quality of life among Poles aged 50–69. We took into account not only the fact of providing care to adult people, but also its beginning, continuation and ending between waves. We assumed that subjective quality of life may be expressed by two variables: one describing life satisfaction, and the second one – loneliness. We used the panel subsample from the Generation and Gender Surveys (GGS) carried out in Poland in 2010/2011 and in 2014. We found a negative effect of stopping caregiving between waves on wellbeing of women-carers, which may be related to the loss of a close person. Moreover, providing care for a longer period of time increases loneliness, which confirms that providing support to others may lead to isolation and smaller social networks.

In order to meet global challenges, cities must be governed efficiently, be compact, and as a result more sustainable, socially coherent, strong and competitive at economic level. Initiatives taken in favour of urban mobility may help in shaping of the global society, putting the main focus on the quality of life, citizens› needs and the principle of sustainable development. These actions aim at focusing citizens› attention on the need to improve air quality, decrease congestion in city’s main streets, but most of all to invest in your own health and physical condition, which increases the level of citizens’ life conditions, and in turn provides the city with considerable economic benefits. However, is it quite a challenge to ensure a sustainable urban mobility pattern which requires a high level of stakeholders’ participation and establishing a detailed complex planning process. The aim of the paper is to present, based on the available literature and data sources and also survey research results, shaping life quality in the aspect of mobility in the context of current megatrends, taking as a case study the CIVITAS DYN@MO project implementation in the city of Gdynia.

The article is the forth one prepared by our team in the series of research on life quality and occupational activity among people with ability limitations („Nauka” 1/2008, „Nauka” 2/2008, „Nauka” 3/2008). The aim of the presented analysis was to create the complex model of determinants for occupational activities of people with disabilities that takes into account the broadest possible look-out. That is why we used the variables from all the fields analyzed in the previous papers in this series i.e. (1) SES; (2) characteristics of disabilities (the type, the degree, the age of acquiring disability); (3) upbringing characteristics in childhood; (4) social network; (5) personal capacities. In order to discover the significant determinants of occupational activities and quality of life among people with different disabilities – which could be both risk and success factors – we have divided the subjects into four groups according to two variables: (1) occupationally active or inactive patients and (2) patients satisfied/dissatisfied with their own income. The group with the largest observed number of risk factors has consisted of the subjects that have been inactive (non-looking for a job) and unsatisfied with their own income. Gender, city size, education, received support, social relations, disability characteristics, upbringing characteristics and personality traits have turned out to be significant risk/success factors. Moreover the results show that in different groups of people with disabilities we find different settings of risk and success factors.

This study is a continuation of the work of Professor Kazimierz Wrześniewski. It concerns the role of curiosity-trait in the dynamics of changes in coping and quality of life after a heart attack. The study was attended by 222 people after a heart attack (73% men), of whom 140 participated in the three stages of the study: at the beginning and at the end of cardiac rehabilitation and a year after leaving the resort. The participants aged 24–64 years (M = 54.19; SD = 6.51). Curiosity-trait was measured by Spielberger and Wrześniewski’s STPI questionnaire. To assess coping strategies a modified version of the COPE by Carver et al., was used. The specific and general quality of life were measured by the Polish adaptations of MacNew and NHP questionnaires. The level of curiosity-trait significantly differentiated changes in the dynamics of positive reinterpretation, problem solving and resignation, but did not affect the change in quality of life within the year after a heart attack.

Opis:
In recent decades, the issue of life quality and its determinants has been increasingly discussed in the scientific literature. One of the key determinants of subjective well-being is the fact of being in a relationship (formal or not) as well as its quality. The results of analyzes for other countries show that people who have a partner have a higher subjective well-being than people who do not live with their spouse, while divorced people have the lowest (and the highest level of depression). In addition to being in a relationship, its quality is also important: people more satisfied with marriage declare greater well-being than those less satisfied. The aim of the study is to analyze quality of life (expressed in terms of well-being and depression) among older people in Poland, putting emphasis on their individual (e.g. age, sex, health status, level of education) and household (financial situation) characteristics. Importantly, the analysis takes into account the quality of the marriage approximated by the satisfaction with marriage declared by both spouses separately. For the purposes of this study I use data of ‘Social Diagnosis’ study carried out in 2015 in Poland. The final sample was limited to partnered older people aged 65+. Basic individual socio-demographic and economic as well as household characteristics were controlled for. The results show that older partnered men in Poland have higher subjective well-being than older partnered women. Also, older partnered men report significantly higher levels of marital satisfaction than older partnered women do. Moreover, it should be underlined that higher levels of marital satisfaction among older spouses may be beneficial for their own quality of life expressed by well-being and depression. Thus, better opinion about marriage may increase subjective well-being and decrease depression level. However, this relationship is different for older partnered men and women. Positive relationship between marital satisfaction and well-being is stronger for partnered women when subjective well-being is taken into account and for men when well-being is understood as depression level.

Opis:
In middle adulthood the intensity of stress is significantly higher than in the preceding developmental period. This stress is particularly significant in the case of chronically ill women, including those with type 2 diabetes. In this group, the disease-related stress intensifies the difficulties generated by the decrease of age-related organismic resources and in many instances impairs the quality of life. Therefore, an ability to cope with difficult situations is of crucial importance. The aim of the research was to estimate the general level of life-satisfaction, as well as the frequency and effectiveness of proactive coping strategies in a group of middle adulthood women with type 2 diabetes compared to women not suffering from diabetes. The study was conducted with methods which have acknowledged psychometric properties (SWLS, WHOQoL - BREF, PCI) as well as a survey collecting sociodemographic data. Women suffering from type 2 diabetes are less satisfied with their prior and current life, health and the physical dimension of their lives and environment. Only partially do they employ proactive coping strategies different from those used by the women from the healthy group. For life-satisfaction in its various aspects it is particularly important for the diabetic women to more often use the strategy of reflective coping and to less often seek emotional support while using the strategy of preventive coping or avoidance. The proactive strategies directed at anticipated stress are connected with the level of life-satisfaction and considered to be health resources.

The main aim of the paper was the analysis of determinants of life satisfaction of people aged 50 years and more in Poland. The data used in the analysis came from the second wave of the Polish Generations and Gender Survey (GGS-PL) that had been carried out in 2014 and 2015. The linear regression models with the dependent variable describing life satisfaction were estimated. Explanatory variables, incorporated into the model, included basic socio-demographic variables as well as a variable describing loneliness. The obtained results are in line with those described in the literature. As expected, better educated individuals, with higher income are more satisfied with life. Similarly, married persons had higher life satisfaction than those living without a spouse. Moreover, persons in employment were more satisfied with life than those economically inactive, while unemployment diminishes life satisfaction of people aged 50+ in Poland, especially for men. The same was found for those having children: they were more satisfied with life than the childless. The most important finding is that the lonely individuals are less satisfied with their lives. Interestingly, the positive relationship between satisfaction with life and having children among people aged 50+ may be explained by loneliness. It means that childlessness is strongly related to loneliness and loneliness mediates the effect of childlessness on satisfaction with life.

This study aims at identifying determinants of health related quality of life in Poland, and in particular at verifying whether health domains are complements or substitutes and what the impact of heterogeneity of population on the health state valuation is. The paper uses data in panel structure coming from a survey conducted in Poland and consisting of 6700 valuations (after data cleaning) of EQ-5D health states with time trade-off method. Several econometric models are built in order to detect the impact of complementarity and heterogeneity. Random effects models as well as random parameters models estimated using Bayesian approach are used. The results show that health domains are complementary goods. Especially the lack of pain/discomfort is a complement to other health domains. Demographic factors influence how health state change impacts utility. These factors encompass sex, education, respondent's health state and even belief in life after death.

A two-career marriage is a modern family model, within which both partners pursue a career as employees, often in leadership positions, but also a career associated with holding specific roles in the family, marriage and the household. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between the level of work engagement and the subjective quality of marital relationships. Moreover, the research attempted to find variables which may mediate the relationship, such as levels of occupational stress experienced, conflict / facilitation of occupational and personal roles and gender. The study was conducted among 150 two-career married couples, with both partners working actively on the competitive labour market, often holding leadership positions and balancing their professional and family roles. All of the participants, aged 28 to 40, had completed higher education and had at least 1 child. The study used the Work-related Behaviour and Experience Pattern Test (AVEM), Well-Matched Marriage Questionnaire (KDM-2), Stress Questionnaire and the Questionnaire of Work and Family Balance. Statistical analysis indicated that work involvement of two-career couples positively contributes to increasing the subjectively perceived quality of their marital relationships. The level of occupational commitment also has a positive relationship with the level of stress experienced and work – family conflicts. Such stress and conflicts are important mediators in the positive relationship between work involvement and the quality of marital relationship. Therefore, if the partners’ work is linked to significant stress, generating additional work-family conflicts, it may consequently negatively affect the quality of marital relations of the dyads.
