CLASSICAL EDUCATION IN POLAND
Opis:
Two articles that first appeared in the Polish press during World War I are reprinted. Józef Kotarbinski, a well known theatrologist, expressed his conviction that the study of social science and economics would be much more useful for high school students than ancient Greek. Jerzy Rosciszewski, then a student of Classics, and later a translator of Catullus, Horace and Ovid, defended the value of a classical education, emphasising its impact on the development of young minds.

Jewish periodicals for children and youth were published in Poland between the two world wars by a variety of bodies: political parties, youth movements, social welfare institutions, educational networks and individual schools. These periodicals were written in three languages: Polish, Yiddish and Hebrew. The Jewish community in Poland during that period was highly heterogeneous in many ways — politically, socially and in the degree of religious observance. Each periodical refl ects the orientation and values of the body publishing it. This article reviews the Jewish periodicals for young people in each of the three languages, and notes these various orientations and values. The article is the fruit of many years of research in which these periodicals were located in Israel, in Poland and in the United States.

Opis:
In terms of immigration flows, Poland is not only a transit country but also a place where increasing numbers of immigrants from the European Union and outside of it decide to settle down. At the same time our knowledge of the immigrants’ integration processes is very scarce. This article, based on the recent research data from the Lesser Poland region, sheds new light on the adaptation processes within the largest immigrant communities in this part of the country. It employees the ethnosizer (Constant et al. 2009) – an index which enables a quantitative assessment of the ethnic identity of immigrants – adapting it to the Polish migration realities. The authors critically evaluate the ethnosizer’s utility for future in-depth research on the integration of immigrants in Poland pointing out its weak and strong sides. The study analyzes four largest immigrant groups which reside in the region of Lesser Poland, namely: Armenians, Ukrainians, Vietnamese, and immigrants from MENA countries. The results indicate inter alia that Armenians and Ukrainians are the most integrated immigrant groups, while the Vietnamese are the most likely to opt for the separation strategy.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the position of the Muslim League in Poland on the issue of citizenship. The paper focuses on the aspect of citizenship in the institutional and legal area stressing civic duties associated with civil loyalty, participation and identification. Additionally, the analysis is supplemented with the issue of Muslim integration into the Polish society. Moreover, the article highlights the role of Islam as a factor determining the civic attitudes presented by the Muslim League in Poland. The manner in which the problem of citizenship is presented in the paper indicates that it is referred to the declared positions, which characterize the particular religious association, rather than the communities of the Polish Muslims of immigrant origin. The analyzed concept of citizenship created by the League is religiously conditioned. The catchphrase: to be a good Muslim means to be a good citizen, which the League refers to, seems to be of the highest significance in his context. This example shows that a religion in this case can be an important factor determining the civil attitudes in the process of integration of the Muslim communities of immigrant origin with the Polish society, and in the broadest perspective, with the European communities.

This text is devoted to the Political Parties Archive [Archiwum Partii Politycznych; http://archiwumpartiipolitycznych.pl] in the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The archive has been in operation since 1993 and is presently undergoing reorganization, which chiefly consists in digitalization. The author presents the idea behind the archive, its history, the classification of its resources, and above all, the information that can be found in it. The collected materials (printed, visual, online) provide information not only about the political parties currently operating in Poland (program documents, election campaigns, participation in social and political life) but also information on the period of systemic transformation and the formation of the democratic system from its beginnings, when opposition political circles in the Polish People’s Republic were working on plans for the future. The author emphasizes that the main characteristic of the archive is the activeness of its operators in obtaining materials (through queries to parties and state institutions, interviews with politicians, and monitoring election campaigns, including the archivization of audio-visual materials). The aim is to understand the mechanisms of political life. The Archive is supposed to have an educational function and by making its information accessible it should increase the transparency of political life.

He was an excellent academic, a true Master, admired and followed by many Polish biochemists. Thrice he served as the Rector of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He navigated the University through a difficult time of political transformation in Poland, modernized the management system of the University and led to the commencement of the construction of the new University campus. He was the co-creator and the first Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland. He will be remembered as a devoted community worker aiming at strengthening the bond between the Polish community abroad and our homeland, propagating knowledge, promoting the concept of European integration, democracy and tolerance, as well as the collaboration between scientists, artists and men and women of culture. He was wise, righteous, and noble. Many had the honor of calling him their friend, and a great many saw in him a moral authority.

Postponing motherhood is a widespread phenomenon across developed countries, however only few studies look into very late motherhood in post-socialist countries using individual level data. In this study, I look at the context of the first childbirth in Poland in the midst of the political transformation of 1989. Employing sequence analysis I reconstructed life trajectories of women who experienced the transition to adulthood during the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s and have just completed their fertility histories. Individual data from the 2011 GGS-PL and the 2011 FAMWELL Survey were used. Comparing paths of mothers’ lives, I searched for differences in educational, professional and conjugal careers between women who gave birth before the age of 30 and after the age of 35. The results show how various life careers crisscross over the life course leading women to late motherhood.

The topic of the article concerns the issue of place attachment and its determinants. An analysis of place attachment was performed in terms of place identity and place dependence (Williams, Vaske, 2003). Moreover, links between place attachment and selected geographical (size and type of place, geographical region), demographic (age, sex) and psychological (satisfaction with life) variables were investigated. The study group included 759 respondents: 398 women and 361 men, aged 18-83 years, residing in 74 places in the Silesian Province, a region in Poland: in 10 sub-regions in the Upper Silesian conurbation and outside the conurbation. The study used the Place Attachment Scale (Williams, Vaske, 2003), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, Griffin, 1985) and a personal information section containing questions regarding place of permanent residence, sex and age. Results showed that subjects residing in smaller and non-industrial places had a stronger place attachment than those residing in larger and industrial cities. People living outside the Upper Silesian conurbation were more strongly attached to their place of residence in terms of place identity than those residing in the Upper Silesian conurbation. People living in the Zagłębie (industrial) sub-region were more strongly attached in terms of place dependence than those residing in the Bytom sub-region (devastated with high unemployment). Satisfaction with life was positively correlated with place attachment. Older subjects were more strongly attached to their place of residence. Men and women did not differ in the sense of place attachment and life satisfaction.

This article is about immigrants’ perceptions of their host society and cultural differences. The analysis is based on twenty in-depth interviews conducted in 2018 with persons from Turkey working in Poland. Their narratives are a rich source of information about the challenges of the integration process and about the opportunities and dilemmas of ethnically and religiously diverse groups in Polish society, which is becoming increasingly multicultural. The respondents pointed to the recent noticeable deterioration in the attitude of Poles toward foreigners in general, which translates into more negative attitudes toward Turks. The cultural differences most commonly noticed related to work culture and working conditions. Although Poland’s fairly large ethnic uniformity was mostly declared to be a hindrance in the adaptation process, some immigrants saw it as strengthening social cohesion and facilitating adaptation to life in the new country. In defining the cultural differences and expectations of the host society, the foreigners became more aware of the values, practices, and attitudes with which they had become acquainted. Some interviewees did not define the differences they observed as traits of the sending or receiving society but rather “de-nationalized” the differences and referred to other categories of diversity, for example, of a class nature.

The scientific discourse is also a part of Polish experiences. The previous treatment of the subject of this paper were historical in nature, fragmentary or were descriptions of individual experiments and experiences of individual universities. Presented approach has not only a synthetic character, but also provides an outline of the original, the Polish concept of teaching - blended learning.

The main purpose of this paper is to describe the specificity of Polish academic institutions that employ foreign-born scholars. The empirical material comes from a two-year research project, involving 100 qualitative in-depth interviews with “international” employees and additional 20 with their Polish colleagues, mainly supervisors. The study demonstrated that the organizational units of universities and research institutes employing foreign-born scholars could be divided into four basic types: language departments, “special units” (focused on international cooperation or advanced studies), laboratories, and the “islands.” An additional category is composed of the centers where the academic staff shortage is a serious problem, but this category, unlike the others, is likely to be seriously affected by the ongoing higher education reform. The article adopts a neo-institutional perspective, which enables to analyze these types of units in terms of institutional work (including construction of normative networks, defining, vesting), done by the foreign-born employees.
