Upper Silesia
Opis:
For centuries, identity has been an important existential issue, because it organizes human relation with the world. Identity is not only one man's being in a biological sense, but the principle of social and cultural order. The identity is the self-awareness, the result of the social actor's involvement in a variety of network connections which are forming a human being together with the biological dimension. Thus, the identity, on the one hand, is a kind of Erikson's tradition, namely the sense of being human, on the other hand interactionist tradition, modification of identity through a process of interaction. Contemporary world, the world of confronting cultures, raises the need for analysis of identity within many cultures, which has been shaped by continuous contact with different values, norms, patterns of behaviour. Upper Silesia has been our empirical reference point for the discussion on social (regional) identity. Identity of Upper Silesia is the result of a long and complicated history and present day. This identity is created by Polish, German, Czech and Jewish a cultural elements.

Opis:
This article presents the relations between identity and religion based on biographical interviews with people of Polish decent currently living in Crimea. Poles in Crimea are a minority functioning in a multinational context, among 134 other nations. According to the last census nearly 4,000 people declared membership of the Polish group. The conducted research shows that persons of Polish decent are dispersed, constituting larger clusters in cities such as Simferopol, Sevastopol or Yalta. It is there that after 1991 Roman-Catholic parishes and associations of Poles have been established. The objectives of the associations are to integrate the dispersed communities, safeguard the remembrance of history and culture, as well as maintain ties with the homeland. The article considers the role of religion in relation to identity on three levels: the construction, maintainability, and change of identity. On the first level, a significant element repeatedly mentioned in the biographical narratives is baptism, as an initiation into the religious community, and celebrating Christmas and Easter. Baptism in the Orthodox rite was frequent in the researched group and, as it occurred, was a path to changing one's identity; similarly to mixed marriages. What is interesting, in maintaining one's identity an important role is played by identifying Polishness with Catholicism, also in the group of people who have a complex, contextual identity and, depending on this context, identify themselves as Poles or Russians. In all cases the recollections of lost coherent national and religious identity among the ancestors are kept alive. They are important in maintaining one's identity and take part in constructing the boundaries of group identity, mainly in relation to the Russians as a dominant group, and in differentiating Catholicism from Orthodoxy. In these comparisons Poles are characterized by higher culture, spirituality, linkages with the European tradition and the ability to treasure it. These functions are strengthened by a revival of Catholicism in Crimea, possible after the collapse of the Soviet Union and enabling the respondents to manifest the links between this religion and Polishness by means of participating in religious practices and organizing activities in a few Roman Catholic parishes.

Opis:
Issues related to identities and ethno-national identifications are more frequently described and analysed in the context of social dynamics. Researchers dealing with the theme point to the evolution of identities, change in their makeup related to the emergence of a different context of group functioning, and also changes connected with the nature of ethnic relations, from habitual relations to ideological relations. The article concerns the Lemko people’s identity. This is a borderline group of multi-dimensional cultural identity, divided in terms of identity. A number of the Lemko people consider themselves as Ukrainians, others consider the Lemko as a distinct ethnic group, while others see themselves as a Carphatorussian nation along with Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians. The article consists of two main parts. The first part presents basic categories of identity that have been reconstructed on the basis of the research results. The study was carried out in the mid-nineties among representatives of this small east-Slavic community. The second part examines the dynamics of the Lemko identity. The dynamics show variability of its cultural content and a certain evolution of identity constructs created by the Lemko ethnic leaders. The text highlights new developments that emerged in the debate on identity after the Lemko were inscribed as a separate ethnic minority to the Act on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Language of 2005.

The aim of the study was to examine identity statuses in various life domains and the relationship between identity and well-being. We adopted the three-dimensional model of identity (Crocetti et al., 2008), including: in-depth exploration, commitment, and reconsideration of commitment. Moreover, in accordance with domain-specific approach (Goossens, 2001), we sought to empirically derive identity statuses in various life domains. The participants included 835 emerging adults (Mage = 21.81, SD = 2.33). We examined eight domains previously identified in qualitative research: personality characteristics, past experiences, family, friends and acquaintances, worldview, hobbies and interests, aims and plans for the future, and occupation. To measure three identity processes, we used a modified version of the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (Crocetti et al., 2008) and to measure well-being we used the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (Keyes, 2013). Results indicate that, although the statuses identified in previous research were, to a large extent, replicated (except moratorium), people were classified in different statuses in different domains; thus, we conclude that talking about statuses should be limited to a given domain. Well-being was the highest in achievement statuses and the lowest in diffusion, but only in two examined domains: personality characteristics and past experience.

There is now a wealth of research that explores the relationship between identity and foreign language teaching. This paper, by analysing stories delivered by teachers of varied professional experience, is intended to show that teacher identity can be viewed not just in relation to the cognitive dimension of the self, but rather with respect to the professional discourses prevailing in a particular historical period. Conceiving identity in this way requires a focus on the professional aspects of teaching theories and practices, along with issues of individual identity development situated in socio-political contexts and identifications with communities of practice. The paper centers on the contextually embedded factors that are liable to change with the social, cultural and historical discourses of practice.

Researching migrants' social identity is considered by the author as a technically and organizationally complicated undertaking, but foremost as a significant intellectual challenge in both the theoretical and methodological dimensions. The article presents and discusses a number of recommendations concerning engagement in such research. The most important include: grounding the research in middle-range theories; moving beyond methodological nationalism; taking an interdisciplinary approach and a historical and processual perspective; resorting to fieldwork, which flexibly employs so-called soft research techniąues, including observation, which requires a longer stay in the field; applying grounding and triangulation procedures in the process of collecting empirical data.

The article regards the religious identity of young people in the modern Ukrainian society. The qualitative analysis is based on the written students' autobiographies collected in various regions of the country. As a result of the texts interpretation, there were defined the following three types of religious identity among young people: deep, critical and situative-affiliative. Each of them has its own mixture of subjective and objective factors in construction of religious identity (intentions for choice, critical or uncritical perception of institutional religious behavior, biographical aspects that often push people to become religious).

The Integrated Psychosocial Model of Criminal Social Identity (IPM-CSI) explains the underlying reasons, i.e. risk factors, for the development of criminal social identity (CSI). Empirical research surrounding these risk factors is inconsistent in the measures and procedures used and the risk factors were mostly considered in isolation from one another. The main purpose of the paper was to review existing empirical studies elucidating correlates of CSI incorporated in the IPM-CSI and indicate further direction for research. A search in PubMed, PsychInfo, ERIC, Google Scholar, and the journal Child Development and Adolescent Studies was performed. Eleven studies exploring the correlates of CSI were identified and discussed herein. Studies indicated that there is potential for further expansion of the IPM-CSI to consider the consequences of CSI. Based on the present study results, a set of recommendations are provided for future research.

The article presents the results of a study investigating the links between emotion regulation and identity. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the two variables. On the basis of neo-eriksonian theories, an attempt to specify the role of emotion regulation in the process of identity formation was made. The study involved 849 people (544 women, 304 men) aged 14-25. The participants attended six types of schools: lower secondary school, basic vocational school, technical upper secondary school, general upper secondary school, post-secondary school, and university. The research was conducted with the use of two questionnaires: Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS). The analysis of the results points to a partial confirmation of the assumed hypotheses about the differences between people with different identity statuses in respect of the six investigated dimensions of emotion regulation. Also, the hypotheses about the links between the dimensions of emotion regulation and dimensions of identity in the subgroups with different identity statuses were partially confirmed.

This paper is devoted to a detailed analysis of body images, its functions and roles that it plays in the process of searching for identity in the drama Archetype Medea – a Monologue for a Woman Who Sometimes Speaks (2000) by Ivana Sajko. In the current “postmodern climate,” traditional ideas about the human subject — such as the idea of the autonomous and pre-social subject as the source of truth, rationality and identity — have come under heavy pressure. In postmodern discourse the human subject no longer figures as a point from which the universe can be moved. Postmodernism and postdramatic theatre shows us the human subject as a position, as materialized and dynamic construct produced at the intersection of Nature and Culture, in a whole range of discursive practices the meanings of which are a constant site of struggle over power. The attractive literary strategies in Sajko`s play show main directives in the emotional, biological, cultural and social constructions and representations of the embodied female subject that feels, speaks and shows, confirms its tendency towards the (self-)realisation.

The article presents the Identity Dynamics Questionnaire (IDQ) as a method for measuring identity processes and modes included in the identity dynamics model by Oleś. The model refers to general processes of personality development that underlie identity functioning located on two dimensions: the internal experience and the external activity. The new tool was created to validly and reliably operationalize the theoretical proposition and to verify its assumptions and relations between components of the model. Four studies were conducted as successive stages of constructing the IDQ. Studies 1 and 2 aimed to exploratory setting the content of subscales designed to measure four identity processes (integration, reconstruction, adaptation, expansion – part A of the IDQ) and four identity modes (stabilization, fluidity, amplification, pliability – part B of the IDQ). Studies 3 and 4 served to confirmatory analyses concerning the structure of the IDQ and show its validity. The studies showed satisfactory psychometric properties of current version of the new method.

Departing from the model suggested by Luyckx, Schwarz, Berzonsky et al. (2008), the relationships between identity and educational context, social participation, and identity information processing style were investigated. Participants were 972 students from six vocational schools in Poznań. The students, within these six schools, attended Grades I-III of three types of vocational schools: basic vocational schools (n=271), technical upper secondary schools (n=448), and specialized upper secondary schools (n=253). Three questionnaires were used: The Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS/PL), which measures five identity dimensions according to the concept of Luyckx, Schwarz, Berzonsky et al. (2008), Social Participation Questionnaire, developed by Brzezińska, Rękosiewicz and Hejmanowski (see Rękosiewicz, 2013b), enabling identification of the type of social participation, and the Polish adaptation of M. Berzonsky’s Identity Style Inventory 4 (ISI-4) authored by A. Senejko (2010), to examine identity styles. The results showed that the students from basic vocational schools and technical upper secondary schools were more often characterized by the normative identity style, whereas the students from specialized upper secondary schools manifested a greater tendency to engage themselves in exploration, both adaptive and ruminative.
