Opis:
Although the interaction and the resulting interdependence of the involved parties on different sides of a state-national border is the constitutive component of the accepted understanding of the concept of transnationalism, the impact of immigrants’ transnational engagements on the home-country side of interconnection created by this phenomenon has thus far remained largely underexplored. This essay addresses this issue in a comparative-historical assessment of the effects of transnational engagements of past and present immigrants in America on the economies, civic-political affairs, material and symbolic culture, and social relations of their home-country localities. The transformative effects of immigrant transnational engagements on their home countries are treated in terms of glocalization understood as the process of simultaneous homogenization and heterogeneization of economic, political, and sociocultural forms.

Bacterial infections that are due to consumption of poor quality water are still an important threat to human health and life. The aim of the article was to investigate the bacteriological threat of water from home wells. The results of water testing from individual wells constituted research material. On their basis, the health risk of fecal streptococci, coliforms and Escherichia coli was assessed and an attempt was made to assess the impact of pollution on the health of residents. The results of water testing in private wells showed unacceptable values for bacteriological pollution. A significant health risk was found for fecal streptococci, coliforms and Escherichia coli. The authors pointed out the need to take extensive actions aimed at raising environmental and health awareness of the inhabitants in terms of water quality used for living purposes, in particular for consumption.

Opis:
The study considers remittances as part of the lifeworlds of immigrants in multiple interactions with return intentions and communication with those left behind. This is an alternative view of the standard approach to remittances as a possible source of development or as a variable to be explained by family solidarity, investment projects or the reasons for return. The key dependent variable is the home orientation of immigrants as a function of remittances, return intentions and communication behaviours, measured in quantitative and typological terms. The typological analysis of home orientation diverges from the standard approach, which is in terms of high or low intensity of cross-border activities of remitting or communicating between immigrants and those they have left behind. It argues for the fact that cross-border activities combine in different ways to generate specific social types of remitting practices. The remitting behaviours of migrants are, in our approach, multidimensional, encompassing economic, social and cultural content. Three hypotheses are formulated on: 1) collective deprivation in remitting money; 2) survival–development–identification strategies of migrants’ families; and 3) higher predictability of home orientation compared to economic remitting behaviours. In this context, higher predictability means greater variation of the synthetic variable of home orientation by social, cultural and economic factors as compared to the impact of the same factors on the more abstract variable of economic remittances.

The need and interest in conducting biomedical research outside the traditional laboratory is increasing. In the field testing such as in the participant's home or work environment is a growing consideration when undertaking biomedical investigation. This type of research requires at a minimum semi-autonomous computer systems that collect such data and send it back to the laboratory for processing and dissemination with the smallest amount of attendance by the participant or even the experimenter. A key aspect of supporting this type of research is the selection of the appropriate software and hardware components. These supporting systems need to be reliable, allow considerable customizability and be readily accessible but also able to be locked down. In this paper we report a set of requirements for the hardware and software for such a system. We then utilise these requirements to evaluate the use of game consoles as a hardware platform in comparison to other hardware choices. We finish by outline one particular aspect of the supporting software used to support the chosen hardware platform based on the OSGi framework.

The spread of the coronavirus has led to significant modifications in the majority of social and private institutions. For most families, home is now the location of many activities that are usually kept separate, such as work, school, entertainment, and socialising. Migrant families, for whom the school was the primary place for socialising, were forced to “host” school at home. As a result, migrant families’ homes have been reconstructed from a private household and intimate dwelling place into a mixture of spaces. This paper applies the theory of social diffusion developed by Dodd and Winthrop, and the concept of social solvation designed by Sarnowska et al., to study the diffusion of places at the time of lockdown. The data are derived from a qualitative study of migrant families in Poland during the school shutdown. This study investigates how the mixture of various places within the home has affected the lives of family members.

Opis:
Poles are today the largest group of family immigrants to Norway. Since Polish immigration is an intra-European movement of labour, there are no specific laws or regulations, apart from labour regulations, pertaining to the introduction of Polish families to Norway and their settlement there. Consequently, there are few guidelines in schools and local authorities on dealing with Polish children in school. They receive the same introduction to school as immigrants from any other background, with no consideration of the specific characteristics of Poles. Equally, their parents are not eligible for the orientation courses and language classes that are offered to adult asylum seekers or refugees. As these are expensive, many Polish parents postpone language classes until they can afford them or find alternative ways of learning language and culture. In this article, I explore the inclusion of Polish children in Norwegian schools through the voices of teachers receiving Polish children in their classrooms and Polish mothers of children attending school in Norway. Interviews with both teachers and mothers reveal inadequate understandings of each other’s conceptions of school, education and the roles of home and school in the education of children. They also demonstrate a limited understanding of culturally bound interpretations of each other’s actions. Although both sides are committed to the idea of effective integration, we risk overlooking the social and academic challenges that Polish children face in Norwegian schools unless conceptions and expectations of school and education are articulated and actions are explained and contextualised. There is also a risk that cultural differences will be perceived as individual problems, while real individual problems may be overlooked due to poor communication between schools and families. The data is drawn from an extended case study including classroom observations, interviews with teachers and Polish mothers in Norway, and focus groups of educators and researchers in the field of social work.

In this paper, a greedy algorithm inspired by the Prim’s algorithm for finding minimum spanning trees (MSTs) in undirected graphs is considered for channel assignment in this type of networks. The proposed solution tested for example network distributions achieves results close to the exhaustive approach and is, in many cases, several orders of magnitude faster.

Opis:
poland stands out in international comparisons as a country where leaving the parental home is remarkably delayed. There are many economic and institutional factors which contribute to postponement of residential independence among youth, such as housing shortages, limited availability of rental housing and limited social assistance for young people. however, there is little discussion in public debate about re-designing social policy support for youth or improving the situation on the housing market. What attracts attention instead is the role of flexibilisation of contractual arrangements on the polish labour market. In media discourse, fixed- term contracts have been labelled as “trash contracts” and all the problems that young people in poland face when making the transition to adulthood have been attributed to the spread of this specific employment form. This article aims to find out whether fixed-term contracts do indeed hinder residential independence of youth. Models of leaving the parental home are estimated based on panel data from EU-SIlC. The results show no significant negative impact of temporary employ- ment on the probability of establishing one’s own household among youth. What matters is whether young people have jobs at all, whereas the type of contract that they receive from employers seems to be of little importance.

This article deals with the issue of home-country receptivity towards social remittances from the professional diaspora. Social remittances from the highly skilled depend on a favourable context for knowledge and skills transfer in their home countries, a context that could be summarised by the term ‘country receptivity’. This article is based on the case of Lithuania. The data comes from a series of semi-structured interviews with members of the skilled diaspora and representatives of institutions that are involved in programmes targeted at the diaspora. The analysis reveals several groups of obstacles to successful knowledge and skills transfer that may be understood as issues of country receptivity: mistrust of government by diaspora members, expressed as a belief that it is not interested in results and thus involvement of the diaspora, but rather in pursuing particular political objectives; lack of openness towards other experiences (unwillingness of institutions at different levels and in various fields to open up to new opinions, approaches and experiences brought by Lithuanians from abroad); bureaucratic and institutional impediments (inability of institutions to adapt their procedures in the interests of cooperation; slowness and ineffectiveness when dealing with requests or reacting to initiatives from the diaspora); and a perceived negative opinion (unwelcoming attitude) in society towards Lithuanians from abroad. The interviews also provide some tentative evidence of a ‘feedback loop’, through which the involvement of the diaspora causes changes in the home-country institutions. In the discussion part of the article, possible causes and implications of these obstacles are considered.

Opis:
Because of the difficulties with conceptualization and its intimate as well as political character, the notion of home was not often used in social sciences. Paradoxically, the interest in “home” in the last several decades appeared mainly in the frames of mobility and transnational studies or with reference to migrants, whose understanding of home is often problematized. On the one hand, research suggest uprooting of migrants, their sense of homelessness and disorientation, on the other however in the frames of feminist or postmodern studies we could witness a deconstruction of traditionally defined home or place attachment. Thus, this article is aimed first at analysing this evolution and discussing different conceptualizations of home in social sciences. Subsequently, based on biographical interviews with people who have since childhood migrated with their parents (Third Culture Kids) and followed mobile lifestyle in their adult life, different ways of describing home are considered. They include other than territorial definitions, referring to significant others, certain period of life or particular routines. Some interviews demonstrate positive aspects of “homelessness” and nomadic attitude connected primarily with freedom and transgression.

Every human activity generates waste. In recent decades, the amount of waste started to significantly increase at the same time threatening people and the environment due to the content of harmful substances such as plastics, heavy metals and dangerous chemicals. The current waste management policy requires elimination of these substances from landfills, reducing the overall amount of waste deposited in landfills and increase in the fraction recovered for recycling. At the level of household waste should be segregated, at least into four fractions. In order to determine the impact of waste management for the development of man's closest environment, ie household, it is necessary to analyze the waste management system at various levels resulting from the waste collection and segregation until their transfer to further treatment, disposal or landfilling. This article seeks to provide propositions for new solutions to such management of space at home to reduce the space occupied by the waste.

Opis:
With transition process in Slovenia, starting in 1991, also care for older people was considerably transformed. Policy measures and new services for older people living at home and their informal, mostly family, carers were the most essential contribution in this area. Social home care, as one of these services, is the focus of the paper. The first Slovenian representative survey of social home care users (2013) was used to assess the care arrangements among users of social home care. Multiple cluster analysis for symbolic data (no care, formal care only, informal care only, mixed care) carried out on 22 activities of daily living, discovered five groups of social home care users. Clusters were empirically aligned with availability of informal care network and need for care. Care arrangements empirically show compensatory and supplementary function of formal care in complementary model. Social home care was the most frequently selected additional source of care in assessment of future need for care across all clusters, with informal network being the second most frequently selected source.
Ustalenia w zakresie opieki empirycznie wykazują funkcję kompensacyjną i uzupełniającą opieki formalnej w komplementarnym modelu. Opiekun domowy świadczący usługi społeczne był najczęściej wybieranym dodatkowym źródłem opieki w ramach oceny przyszłego zapotrzebowania na opiekę wśród wszystkich podzbiorów, natomiast sieć nieformalna stanowiła drugie najczęściej wybierane źródło.

The aim of this article is to show the home as an emotional place. The sphere of social conditions, which has been neglected until recently, can help explain emotion as a social construct. Many researchers have pointed to the emotional dimension of the experience of the home and living practices. A home is a complex place, a conglomerate of three aspects: material, symbolic, and relational. The experience of domesticity can be considered to have multiple aspects and to be variable. Taking emotions into account enables a fuller understanding of the duality of household practices, in connection with both their “function” and their role in creating, recreating, and changing the rules of the social order. In this sense, a home is located between the private and public sphere, emotional authenticity and emotional work, freedom and control, socialization and de-socialization, everyday life and celebration.

Consumers require high-speed data transmission for different activities, such as smartphone usage, live broadcasting of news, and video conferencing. Therefore, a reliable communication network is needed to provide this kind of service to users. Fiber to the home (FTTH) is an optical fiber architecture that uses fiber cables in the access network for direct and final connection to homes or offices of customers. Networks based on FTTH can offer high performance, speed, and quality. An optical fiber communication system based on FTTH device ingress network using gigabit passive optical networks (GPONs) with fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and optical amplifier is designed and analyzed in this study. The developed design based on the FTTH device and FBG shows a low bit error rate (BER) for downstream and upstream configurations with an optical fiber length of 20 km. Downstream and upstream configurations achieve a Q-factor of 89.5 and 181.3, respectively. Achievable sensitivity of the developed system is −28 dBm, while the received signal based on OptiSystem is −25.59 dBm. FTTH with FBG will play a major role in the future and provide effective solutions for a wide variety of applications in network communication systems and data transmission rates.
