    The contribution given in the 20th century by the Polish historians to the studies on the Risorgimento age in general, and especially on the Polish-Italian relations in those years, is rich and varied. Authors such as Marceli Handelsman, Adam Lewak, Kalikst Morawski, Stefan Kieniewicz, Marian Żychowski, Emanuel Halicz, just to mention some of the most influential among them, have made the history of the Polish historiography of the Risorgimento, expanding the range of knowledge on the ideas and protagonists of that era and opening the way for a new generation of historians that continues today to look after this important field of historical studies.

    The article is an analysis of a passage from a no longer extant text by a Greek historian Timaios (FGrH 566 F131) that survived in the form of a quotation in the works of six later authors. The form in which the passage has survived poses a number of interpretation problems which, in turn, lead to the question of the significance of a narrative context in historical analysis.

    Micro-(h)istorical narratives by Claude Duneton and Jean Echenoz – The purpose of this article is a comparative study of two recent French novels, Le Monument. Roman vrai by Claude Duneton (2004) and 1914 by Jean Echenoz (2012), which, in spite of formal and ideological differences, approach the theme of the Great War in a way similar to micro-historical frameworks. Like historians representing this field of historiography, both writers depict the four years of the First World War by focusing on a small community and a geographical space limited to a small location on the home-front. Referring to the distinction between roman de l’historien (the historian’s novel) and roman du témoin (the witness’s novel) proposed by Emmanuel Bouju, the author of the article analyses the strategies used by the novelists to create an indirect witness’s point-of-view, juxtaposed with the perspective of the contemporary recipient of the events that happened a hundred years ago.
    Celem artykułu jest porównanie dwóch francuskich powieści – Le Monument. Roman vrai Claude’a Dunetona (2004) i 1914 Jeana Echenoza (2012), w których opowieść o I wojnie przypomina strategie stosowane w pisarstwie mikrohistorycznym. Odnosząc się do rozróżnienia pomiędzy kategoriami powieści historyka (roman historique) i powieści świadka (roman istorique), w ujęciu Emmanuela Bouju, autor omawia strategie stosowane przez obu powieściopisarzy w celu stworzenia efektu zapośredniczonego świadectwa zestawionego z punktem widzenia dzisiejszego odbiorcy wydarzeń sprzed stu lat.

    The ten years Stanisław Pigoń spent in Wilno (1921-1931) was a very important phase of his life. Wilno not only attracted a great deal of his research but also became the focus of a lasting emotional attachment, a sentiment which he reaffi rmed in a memoir published shortly before his death in 1968. Although a lot is already known about Pigoń’s Wilno decade, there are some episodes that are worth a closer examination. One of them is a debate about Konrad’s cell which he triggered off just before leaving Wilno. The controversy concerns a cell in the former Basylian Monastery where Adam Mickiewicz was imprisoned in 1823 and where Konrad, the main character of his Dziady (Forefathers’ Eve) undergoes a spiritual transformation, the climax of the poetic drama. Pigoń contributions to this interminable debate exhibit a fi ne balance of scholarly precision and passionate conviction. This article not only looks at the origin and the early phases of the Konrad’s cell controversy in their contemporary background but also tries to show Pigoń’s involvement in the life of the university and the cultural and literary life of Wilno.

    The article is a commentary on the Code of Ethics of the Polish Historical Association published in March 2021. In the first part of the article, we critically discuss the Code using the metaphor of a “besieged fortress” and the categories of hierarchy and truth. In our view, by taking a defensive position, reproducing hierarchical relations within the community of historians and in relation to the public, and by placing the category of truth at the centre of the principles of the discipline, the authors of the Code do not respond to the contemporary challenges facing history. In the second part, we postulate the rebuilding of the Code on the basis of the categories of dialogue, polyphony and democracy, and we propose a number of amendments to its content.

    The article analizes Stanisław Pigoń’s essay ‘Some Golden Thoughts on the Chair of Polish Literature’ written to commemorate the 600th jubilee of the Jagiellonian University. Stanisław Pigoń (1885-1968), Distinguished Profesor of Polish Literature, had it published in the Cracow weekly Życie Literackie in May 1964; its expanded version was published two years later in a volume of essays Drzewiej i wczoraj [In the Old Days and Yesterday] in 1966. Both versions were published again in a a bibliophile volume in December 2018 (the manuscript and the printed versions). At the heart of Pigoń’s essay are the twin ideas of freedom and the ‘spiritual life of the nation’, borrowed from Juliusz Słowacki’s epic poem The Spirit King. The article examines Pigoń’s key theme and the manner in which, as he saw it, it shaped the lectures of the most eminent professors of Polish literature in the 19th and 20th century (Michał Wiszniewski, Karol Mecherzyński, Stanisław Tarnowski, Ignacy Chrzanowski). Pigoń’s survey ends in 1910, but, as the author of the article observes, by that time the ideas he so strongly believed in were as relevant as ever.
