THE POLISH MOVEMENT IN GERMANY
Opis:
The paper presents research results on contemporary Polish organizations in the Federal Republic of Germany. Polish associations in Germany have worked since the mid-19 the century. The Polish movement went through many changes over this time. One of changing elements was a profile of associations’ activities and functions they played for the Polish Diaspora in Germany. Data analysis shows that currently most organizations take actions on Poland’s and Polish culture promotion, Polish-German relations improvement and maintenance of Poles identity. Fewer organizations are engaged in the field of advocacy, self-help and counseling. The consequence of this situation is the lack of institutional completeness, the necessity to search for specific services off the Polish movement in Germany and limited confidence of customers in organizations.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with Romanian workers posted in the German construction and meat-processing industries, with representatives of German unions and with migrant advisers, and on ethnographic work, this study examines precarity in posted employment. Firstly, the paper describes the precarious circumstances of Romanians posted in the construction and meat-industry sectors in Germany. Secondly, analysing the Romanians’ own perspectives, it shows that low wages in the country of origin, often associated with insecurity and poor working conditions, drive these workers to engage in posted work. Their lack of knowledge of the German language prevents them from finding and carrying out standard jobs in Germany and, thus, determines that they remain in posted employment. Finally, the paper argues that posted workers experience different layers of precarity in the country of destination. It shows that those under contract with various companies for short periods of time are more precarious than de facto posted workers and workers with long-term informal agreements with one single employer.

Opis:
We investigated the influence of personality and culture on effects of mortality salience (MS) over cultural worldview defense (CWVD). We hypothesized that CWVD reactions to MS differ between Germany and Poland because of the higher conservatism of the latter country, and that they are moderated by action vs. state orientation. In this study German (N=112) and Polish (N=72), participants were exposed either to MS or to a control condition (dental pain). Punishment ratings to trivial offences and serious social transgressions were measures of CWVD. Results showed that social transgressions in both conditions were more strongly punished in Poland than in Germany. Additionally, compared to the control condition, under MS action oriented punished serious transgressions more strongly in Germany whereas state oriented punished serious transgressions more strongly in Poland. That is, the effects of MS on CWVD are moderated by personality and culture. We interpret the opposite pattern of punishment to serious social transgressions given by action and state orientedin in Germany and Poland, respectively, according to the higher emotional autonomy of action-oriented persons in either culture.

POLISH MIGRATION TO GERMANY
INTERGENERATIONAL CARE
MOBILITY CAPITAL
TRANSNATIONAL FAMILIES
Opis:
Migration and care are normative in terms of the social expectations, obligations and common-sense which they involve. Intergenerational care in Poland is recurrently characterized as being highly binding in terms of filial responsibilities in home-based care arrangements. The on-going high rates of emigration therefore ought to challenge intergenerational care arrangements. The majority of research proves, however, that migration does not dissolve migrants’ care obligations toward their relatives in the emigration countries, but that they persist with some modifications and adaptations to its distant character. Previous studies therefore connect migrants’, and to a lesser extent their relatives’ in the emigration countries, care practices to the normativity of the distinct “care culture’’ in Poland. This article explores the idea that practices and obligations of intergenerational care are inherently tied to the social expectations and meanings attached to migration. Twenty interviews with Polish migrants in Germany and ten interviews with their relatives in Poland reveal how the binding character of familial care arrangements and high rates of emigration can co-occur in that transnational personal relations, between migrants and their non-migrant relatives, support the familial and home-based care arrangements by relational adaptations. The adaptations involve (self-)exclusions from (among others) mobility based on the intersection of previous migration experiences, the closeness of the family relationship as well as generation and gender, placing close, female and immobile family members (i.e. daughters) in a de-privileged position in transnational relations.

Wrocław and Lvov are two big metropolises full of historical monuments which were located on the borderlands of terrains occupied by nations with glorious past and their own universities. The location played a decisive role in the fact that both universities were involved in political and national conflicts. Lvov defended Polish traditions in the East and Wrocław initiated and organized the intellectual fight for maintaining the German eastern borderland. Jan Kazimierz University (Uniwersytet Jana Kazimierza) in Lvov was founded earlier than the University of Wrocław. The first was Polish in character, the latter was German. Political changes after the Second World War resulted in liquidation of the Jan Kazimierz university in Lvov. It was replaced by the national Ukrainian university. The German university in Wrocław was also liquidated. The new Polish university used its building and libraries. At the same time inherited from Jan Kazimierz University its cadre and ethos and referred to the most prominent German scholars.

Ernst (-Hartwig) Kantorowicz, born in Poznań (then Germany) in 1895, died in Princeton in 1963, is one of the most distinguished and influential historians (mediaevalists) of the 20th century. A descendent of an affluent Jewish-German (totally naturalized) family, after the rebirth of the Polish state in 1918 moved together with the family to Germany, took part in the World War I, struggled against the Polish insurgents and against the communists in Berlin and Munich, studied a.o. in Heidelberg, where he joined the famous Stefan George circle. After publishing the monograph on Emperor Frederick the Second (1927-1931) he have been callingas professor in Frankfurt a.M., as consequence to the decisions of the Nazi-government he retired in 1933/1934 and eventually in 1938 emigrated to Great Britain and finally to the USA, where (first in Berkeley Ca., then in Princeton) he lived and worked until his death. Besides his fundamental monographs and studies on the medieval political liturgy (Laudes regiae 1946) and the political theology (The Kings’ Two Bodies 1957), his life was characterized by an extraordinary stable opinion and the determination to defend it, as was proved first in 1933 in Nazi- Germany and the second time in Berkeley in 1949 (during the s.c. Loyalty Oath Controversion). This article is an abbreviated and partially changed version of the introduction to the Polish translation of the main work by Kantorowicz (The King’s Two Bodies), to appear in this year.

Upper Turonian to lower Coniacian marls of the Strehlen Formation of the Graupa 60/1 core were investigated for their foraminiferal content to add stratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental information about the transitional facies zone of the Saxonian Cretaceous Basin. Further comparison with foraminiferal faunas of the Brausnitzbach Marl (Schrammstein Formation) were carried out to clarify its relationship to the marls of the Graupa 60/1 core. Tethyan agglutinated marker species for the late Turonian to early Coniacian confirm the proposed age of the marls of the Graupa 60/1 core and the Brausnitzbach Marl. The palaeoenvironment of the marls reflects middle to outer shelf conditions. The maximum flooding zones of genetic sequences TUR6, TUR7 and CON1 could be linked to acmes of foraminiferal species and foraminiferal morphogroups. In general, a rise of the relative sea-level can be recognised from the base to the top of the marls of the Graupa 60/1 core. While agglutinated foraminiferal assemblages suggest a generally high organic matter influx and variable but high productivity in the Graupa 60/1 core, the Brausnitzbach Marl deposition was characterized by moderate productivity and a generally shallower water depth.

Migracje z Polski do Berlina mają kilkusetletnią historię.
Migrations from Poland to Berlin have a centuries-old history. Nowadays, the migration in Berlin is one of the most important centres of Polish people abroad. For several years, one can observe the process of transnationalization of this cluster. This article aims to track changes of functions in a Polish Roman Catholic parish in the context of ongoing transformations. Transformations of migration are in fact a challenge for institutions involved in the organization of life of Poles abroad, including the Church. They reflect in the evolutions of the religious practices of people taking part in them, in their moral attitude, ways of thinking and so on.

Opis:
The turn of the millennium brought an increased interest in issues of multiculturalism, which became a focal point for debates about culture, especially in liberal democracies. The question is particularly important in that most people today live in heterocultural societies. The authors thus do not approach multiculturalism as the simple coexistence in society of members of various ethnic groups but rather as a theoretical basis for the scholarly analysis of the state and of society, which implement policies in regard to internal cultural (ethnic) diversity. Multiculturalism thus defines a social space in which people who adhere to different axiological, normative, religious or moral systems, and who are aware of these differences, live together. At the same time, state policy aims to include all of them in a social order which is being modified under the influence of cultural diversity. Multiculturalism can be presented on the one hand as an idea that is not apprehended directly but is known through concepts, and on the other hand, as an entity identified by the senses. The authors illustrate the transition from an idea to a state policy in regard to a multitude of ethnic cultures by reference to Australia and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Opis:
This article was inspired by the book Studien über die Deutschen [Studies on the Germans] in which Norbert Elias encourages his readers to make sociological descriptions of the habitus of other nations. It is not only a matter of once again relearning lessons from history, but to look at them from the sociological perspective of figuration theory. The author’s aim is to make an initial outline of the research perspective that would combine the macro-sociological changes of Polish society with experience at the micro-sociological level (Łuczewski) or even the biographies of individuals (Bończa-Tomaszewski). For example, the influence of the partitions on Poles’ mentality is part of common knowledge, but it has not been (perhaps precisely for this reason) addressed sociologically. These considerations inevitably lead the author to ask what, in essence, is a nation and what national consciousness is. In conclusion, the author proposes hypothetical main motifs for describing the Polish habitus.

The benthic macroinvertebrates of the Lower Maastrichtian chalk of Saturn quarry at Kronsmoor (northern Germany)been studied taxonomically based on more than 1,000 specimens. Two successive benthic macrofossil assemblages were recognised: the lower interval in the upper part of the Kronsmoor Formation (Belemnella obtusa Zone) is characterized by low abundances of macroinvertebrates while the upper interval in the uppermost Kronsmoor and lowermost Hemmoor formations (lower to middle Belemnella sumensis Zone) shows a high macroinvertebrate abundance (eight times more than in the B. obtusa Zone) and a conspicuous dominance of brachiopods. The palaeoecological analysis of these two assemblages indicates the presence of eight different guilds, of which epifaunal suspension feeders (fixo-sessile and libero-sessile guilds), comprising approximately half of the trophic nucleus of the lower interval, increased to a dominant 86% in the upper interval, including a considerable proportion of rhynchonelliform brachiopods. It is tempting to relate this shift from the lower to the upper interval to an increase in nutrient supply and/or a shallowing of the depositional environment but further data including geochemical proxies are needed to fully understand the macrofossil distribution patterns in the Lower Maastrichtian of Kronsmoor.

A high-resolution latest Early Campanian to Early Maastrichtian carbon and oxygen stable isotope record from the northern German Boreal shelf sea based on 537 analyses of co-occurring belemnites, brachiopods, inoceramids, oysters, and bulk rock samples is presented. All samples are precisely related to their stratigraphic, systematic and facies backgrounds and form an integrated, nearly 10-myr-long dataset with considerable palaeoenvironmental and palaeoceanographical implications. Petrographic studies indicate that low-magnesium calcitic coccoliths and calcispheres (i.e., planktic carbonate) predominate the bulk-rock data (marl-limestone rhythmites and chalks), thus representing a sea-surface water signal, and that only minor diagenetic alteration of the carbonate muds took place. Based on TL and CL microscopy, the investigated belemnites are extraordinarily well preserved, which may in part be explained by their early diagenetic surficial silicification (container effect), while the other macroinvertebrate groups are all less well preserved. The (plankton-dominated) δ13C values of the marl-limestone rhythmites and chalks (+1.1 to +2.5‰), recording a surface water signal, compare well with the δ13C data of inoceramids while δ13C brach.values (+1.5 to +3.0‰) are heavier than the bulk rock data. The large variation in the δ13Cbel. (-0.1 to +3.6‰) is attributed to isotopic disequilibrium of the biogenic carbonate formed by the belemnite animal. The bulk rock δ18O values show a remarkable low scatter, supporting petrographic observation of only minor diagenetic stabilisation/cementation, and can be approximated with northern German shelf sea-surface temperatures of ca. 20°C for the Late Campanian (ca. -2‰ δ18O), being slightly cooler during the Early Maastrichtian. The δ18O values of the belemnite rostra are even less variable and quite rich in heavier 18O (-0.7 to +0.6 with a mean of -0.1‰ δ18Obel.) in comparison to bulk rock and other skeletal components. Based on their excellent microstructural preservation and non-luminescence, we conclude that the belemnite rostra are diagenetically unaltered and have preserved the primary δ18O signal of ambient seawater (12±2°C). In the absence of any indication for migration from cooler water masses and evidence for authochtonous populations we assume that the belemnites of the genera Belemnitella and Belemnella lived as nektobenthos near the sea-floor and thus record the temperature of the bottom mixed layer of the seasonally weakly stratified north German shelf sea at water depths of 100 to 150 m; the temperature gradient was thus 12.5–18.75 m/1°C. A conspicuous latest Campanian cooling event is evident in both sea-surface and bottom-water temperatures. The δ18O values of nearly all investigated benthic fossils lie between the isotope values of pristine belemnites and bulk rock, and, therefore, should be used for palaeotemperature reconstructions only with great care.

STUDENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF MIGRATION
HUNGARIAN PUBLIC EDUCATION
CATEGORIZATION
STATISTICAL DATA COLLECTION
COMPARISON WITH GERMANY
Opis:
This paper focuses on the interrelation between the categorisation of and the educational statistical data collection on members of the group ‘students in the context of migration’. To begin with, this interrelation will be investigated on the basis of an examination of the current (2007-2013) categorisation and statistical data collection practices of Hungarian public education. This will then be contrasted to German practices with regard to the transferability of labels and statistical data categories into the Hungarian context. Finally, on the basis of the results of a case study at a Hungarian public school, which aimed to reveal the diversity within the group of ‘students in the context of migration’, a data collection chart designed for pedagogical purposes will be presented. This chart adds further data collection categories to those already in administrative use. These categories are relevant for day-to-day pedagogical praxis targeted at the group under discussion. The paper argues that a categorisation of ‘students in the context of migration’ that better reflects reality is important, as it renders the inherent diversity of this group more visible. This could help to influence statistical data collection and enable improved pedagogic and policy responses, thus furthering the social integration of the students in question.
