Since 1989 Polish youth, as well as all Polish society, experience dynamic changes of economic, cultural and social environment. These changes affect process of generation change and make generation observations quite interesting. The article is composed of several impressions on contemporary Polish young generation group, which I call European searchers. The reader will find characteristics of some features of generation situation in Poland, the influence of the specific socialisation actions between parents and their growing up children, some remarks on the impact of technological revolution and comparison to Generation Y. The last part of the article is devoted to sociological analysis of the sense of generation identity of European Searchers. Analysis, based on the several years of empirical studies leads to conclusions portraying both, the attitudes and appraisals of contemporary young generation and reality of youth environment and culture at the beginning of the new century.

Opis:
In present article a mathematical model of arc shape wire roughened solar air heater, on the basis of energy and exergy output rates, entropy generation rate and augmentation entropy generation number, has been developed. A parametric study leading to entropy generation minimization has also been performed. In the analysis the geometric and operating parameters which have been considered as variable are: inlet air temperature, duct depth, collector width to duct depth ratio, mass flow rate per unit collector area, and temperature rise parameter. Results have been presented to see the effects of these values on the energy and exergy output rates of the roughened solar air heater. Effect of different values of wire rib roughness parameters on entropy generation has also been presented. Finally, design curves and optimization for different rib roughness parameters on the basis of minimum entropy generation number with temperature rise parameter, have been presented and optimum values also have been found out 0.004 to 0.010 (Km2 )/W. The entropy generation rate obtained for the system, in the present work has been compared with those obtained for solar air heater with different roughness geometries on absorber plates available in the literature for common roughness parameters and operating parameters which validate the present results.

The article concerns safety of power supply for the final consumers, especially its two comprising elements, which are generation adequacy and distribution system re- liability. Generation adequacy has been defined with Loss of Load Probability (LOLP), Loss of Load Expectation (LOLE) and Energy Not Supplied (ENS) indices. Conclusions from generation adequacy forecast prepared by ENSTO-E for Poland compared with other European countries for the years 2020 and 2025 have been discussed along with the resulting threats. Interruptions in energy supply have been characterised by power discontinuity indicator SAIDI. Finally, a reliability and adequacy analysis have been performed for different scenarios of the Polish power system operation in order to assess possibilities of using distributed generation as a backup power source. Based on a simulation model created using the DIgSILENT Power Factory software, the reliability and adequacy calculations have been performed with the probabilistic non-sequential Monte Carlo method and they are followed by a discussion of the obtained results.

Opis:
In the paper a phenomenon of sound production in a resonator driven by an air jet has been investigated. Measurements of sound spectra at the closed end of the resonator cavity were performed to determine the influence of the jet velocity on the frequency and amplitude of excited acoustic oscillations. It was found that in the sound generation process two ranges of the jet velocity could be distinguished where different variations of the oscillation frequency with the growing jet velocity were observed. After the onset of oscillation the frequency increased fast with growing jet velocity and the frequency increment was directly proportional to a value of jet velocity. At higher flow velocities an increase in the frequency was still observed, but the frequency growth was much smaller. The experiment has shown also that due to an excitation of mechanical vibrations of the resonator elements a rapid change in the oscillation frequency occurred. Finally, the experimental data were compared to calculation results to examine the accuracy of the theoretical model, in which a force driving the resonator was predicted from the vortex sound theory and the resonator was modelled by an equivalent impedance circuit.

It is well known that turbulence in the flow can be characterized by two main parameters: the intensity and scale (such as macro- or microscale of length, time or speed). Turbulence in wind tunnels can be generated by a variety of means (placed perpendicularly to the flow) like passive and active grids, most often grids of round or square wires, perforated plates and so on. The aim of this study is to gain a detailed knowledge of the degree of turbulence isotropy and homogeneity in the flow behind the grids of variable geometry. For this purpose, skewness and kurtosis of the velocity fluctuations and also transverse variation for five grids of different parameters were determined. Additionally, some new results on the influence of the initial conditions of turbulence generation on the decay law of turbulence are given.

Opis:
This paper presents mathematical modelling and numerical analysis to evaluate entropy generation analysis (EGA) by considering pressure drop and second law efficiency based on thermodynamics for forced convection heat transfer in rectangular duct of a solar air heater with wire as artificial roughness in the form of arc shape geometry on the absorber plate. The investigation includes evaluations of entropy generation, entropy generation number, Bejan number and irreversibilities of roughened as well as smooth absorber plate solar air heaters to compare the relative performances. Furthermore, effects of various roughness parameters and operating parameters on entropy generation have also been investigated. Entropy generation and irreversibilities (exergy destroyed) has its minimum value at relative roughness height of 0.0422 and relative angle of attack of 0.33, which leads to the maximum exergetic efficiency. Entropy generation and exergy based analyses can be adopted for the evaluation of the overall performance of solar air heaters.

The development of a distributed generation will influence the structure of the power transmission and distribution network. Distributed sources have lower power and therefore the lines of lower voltage are used. Therefore, the electric field intensity near such lines is lower. On the other hand magnetic field intensity may prove essential. The main aim of the paper is to present a method estimating the “ballast” of the natural environment at 50 Hz electric and magnetic fields in the power system, with distributed and centralized generation in real operating conditions.

Opis:
Superconducting magnets in the SIS100 particle accelerator require the supply of liquid helium and electric current. Both are transported with by-pass lines designed at Wrocław University of Technology. Bus-bars used to transfer an electric current between the sections of the accelerator will be encased in a steel shell. Eddy currents are expected to appear in the shell during fast-ramp operation of magnets. Heat generation, which should be limited in any cryogenic system, will appear in the shell. In this work the amount of heat generated is assessed depending on the geometry of an assembly of the bus-bars and the shell. Numerical and analytical calculations are described. It was found that heat generation in the shell is relatively small when compared to other sources present in the accelerator and its value strongly depends on the geometry of the shell. The distribution of eddy currents and generated heat for different geometrical options are presented. Based on the results of the calculations the optimal design is proposed.

The majority of countries, including Poland, face a phenomenon of population ageing. Therefore, providing care for elderly persons becomes a crucial challenge for the societies. A decline in the care-giving potential of families and the rapid increase of numbers of seniors create a need for development of institutional assistance for the elderly. The population of seniors is heterogeneous. Thus, there are different reasons for providing public assistance, and different paths of accessing institutional assistance. The aim of the article is to present the family status of seniors, who wait for a place in a residential care, and their non-familial, informal support networks. To achieve this objective we conduct a survey among 221 social workers who assist seniors and their families through the admittance process for residential care in Łódź – a city with advanced ageing (22.3% of people aged 60+).

This paper presents examples of technologies for distributed energy generation developed at the The Szewalski Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk. These are combined heat and power (CHP) units (generating heat and electricity) for houses with a power from several to tens of kW and for municipalities in the form of the Municipal Energy Centres (with a capacity of several hundred kW up to several MW). A unique project, specializing in ‘energy-plus’ technologies for individual houses and other buildings, which aims to build a Research Centre of PAS in Jabłonna is also presented. These are key technologies for energy sector with respect to distributed generation. Additionally, the article discusses the conditions and opportunities for the development of civil energy generation in our country. Civic energy generation is a great vision in which the citizen becomes an entity and do not subject to the energy market, and additionally has its virtual advisor in the form of smart grid and data processing technologies in a ‘digital cloud’.
