Opis:
Groups of living creatures are often faced with searching for resources and choosing between one or more alternatives of resource site. Such a process is connected either with calm food acquirement or looking for a safe place to hide from danger. The question is, what kind of criteria are taken into consideration and what induces the collective decision, when all individuals in a swarm are equal. This paper identifies a simple mechanism of shelter selection by cockroach herd, whereby an emergent decision is made with limited information and without centralization of information processing or comparison of available solutions. The mechanism leads to the optimal benefit for both a group and an individual. The proposed model activates swarm self-organization and is independent of species, therefore, a possible application to human crowd control has been studied.

Opis:
In his essays, collected in In Mistrust We Trust: Can Democracy Survive When We Don’t Trust Our Leaders? and Democracy Disrupted: The Politics of Global Protest, Ivan Krastev questions the state of contemporary democracy. He describes it as ‘post-political’ because while procedures are observed, democratic elections take place, and governments are sometimes replaced, nothing of substance changes in politics and voters lack any sense of having influence or that their votes actually matter. Democracy is obviously in crisis and a variety of solutions to this predicament have been proposed: even more elections more direct democracy, or more transparency. Or perhaps a remedy to the crisis of democracy will stem from protests and from ‘taking to the streets’—these being ‘alternate means’ of doing politics? Krastev criticizes all the above proposals, concluding that none is satisfactory or likely to restore trust in democratic institutions. Perhaps democracy ought not to be superficially improved, but instead rethought from the be ginning? The author points to several questions that should be taken into account in thinking about a new form of democracy. She also considers whether the mass protests of the 2010s were a new phenomenon and involved new ideas for doing politics, or were typical modern social movements, only on a global scale and employing novel instruments of mobilization.

Opis:
The article summarizes panel discussions led at the Polish Scientific Networks conference. It covers the topics of social and (un)social innovations, their sources, and applications, as well as the new approaches to the concept of the wisdom of the crowds (as opposed to swarm mentality). The article draws on academic research on trust and distrust, declining reliance on formal expertise and a turn against the science, and posttruth society phenomenon. The article concludes with observations about risk aversion in different cultures, to suggest some practical solutions in education programs, needed to address the challenges of the future.

Opis:
This article concerns the question of stigma and the exclusion of individuals by a small community. Three films exemplify this process: Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs (1971); Giuseppe Tornatore’s Malena (2000); and Lars von Trier’s Dogville (2003). Each of these is a study in atypical stigmatization and exclusion—the situations are atypical because the victims of social aggression are not stigmatized in the classic sense by having an unambiguously negative attribute (for instance, poverty, an addiction, a physical deformity, etc.) but are persons who differ from the group in a positive way.
