Opis:
Level crossing is an element of the transport infrastructure of a particular type. This is where streams of regulated and unregulated traffic interact. Vehicles of regulated, rail traffic affect on unregulated, road traffic vehicles. This process takes place over a relatively small area. But the associated processes are concerned with long distances and medium speeds. Importantly, the impact may be mutual (mainly on level crossing cat. D). Consequently, a number of diverse problems can be observed at level crossings as well as in their direct vicinity. One of them is very particular, since its intensity and scale are significantly higher compared to other points of the transport network. This is a problem of how the sight organs of a rail vehicle driver function. At level crossings, a rail vehicle driver is incapable of registering all events connected with moving objects in a horizontal plane of the field of view (often, dozens or hundreds of vehicles and pedestrians, rail vehicles, signs etc.). Especially in agglomeration areas, near the railway stations, people may violently trespass into the tracks. Before reaching a level crossing, the driver’s sight organs perform specific movements of variable dynamics, having a direct impact on the traffic safety. Given the context in question, the article discusses the methods used to measure the characteristics of the train driver’s sight organs by means of eye tracking devices. The measured characteristics are: saccadic movements, fixation point locations, blinking etc. The relevant studies were supported by using additional equipment and techniques, including visual and vibroacoustic ones. These studies have been illustrated with reference to the measurements performed in different sections of the railway network. The aim of the research was to analyse the behaviour of drivers of traction vehicles. The research results have been discussed in quantitative terms, thus introducing several new descriptive characteristics. The data thus obtained, e.g. concerning the functions of the driver’s sight organs, have been analysed using numerical data set characteristics. With regard to the context this article the authors also conduct research addresses measurements of the characteristics of the road vehicle driver’s sight organs performed by means of eye tracking devices.

In this paper, the distances between pedestrian crossings in twenty one places in the city of Wrocław, together with their evaluation by the researched groups of students, were analyzed. The database created from the collected questionnaires contains a set of two-dimensional variables: the distance between crossings and the rating of the students. The database set was analyzed using a fuzzy data mining approach to create particular clusters. Various numbers of clusters were analyzed, and the division of data into three clusters made it possible to relate the analysis to the LOS methodology. Each variable was enriched with a third dimension representing a membership value. The obtained evaluated distances are similar to values recommended in literature, although the distances highly evaluated by the students do not often occur in reality. This might suggest that there is the need to create new crossings, especially in the city centre, where pedestrian traffic is or should be important.

This paper presents the classification of musical instruments using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Higher Order Spectral features. MFCC, cepstral, temporal, spectral, and timbral features have been widely used in the task of musical instrument classification. As music sound signal is generated using non-linear dynamics, non-linearity and non-Gaussianity of the musical instruments are important features which have not been considered in the past. In this paper, hybridisation of MFCC and Higher Order Spectral (HOS) based features have been used in the task of musical instrument classification. HOS-based features have been used to provide instrument specific information such as non-Gaussianity and non-linearity of the musical instruments. The extracted features have been presented to Counter Propagation Neural Network (CPNN) to identify the instruments and their family. For experimentation, isolated sounds of 19 musical instruments have been used from McGill University Master Sample (MUMS) sound database. The proposed features show the significant improvement in the classification accuracy of the system.

Walking is being promoted as either a main mode of transportation or as a part of multimodal mobility. However, a rapid growth and development in urban areas has resulted in a drastic increase in human population as well as vehicular population in most of the metropolitans across the globe. Due to this, there is an unavoidable increase in conflicts between vehicular traffic and pedestrians often sharing the same road space. At an undesignated crossing, pedestrians wait for suitable inter-vehicular gap to cross the road. However, in order to reduce the waiting delay, pedestrians often take risk by accepting smaller gaps while crossing the road. It increases the probability of their collision with approaching vehicles. Apart from the frequency of crashes, the crash severity is also vastly governed by traffic flow characteristics. In this regard, it is a common belief that the reduction in speed of approaching vehicles can significantly bring down the severity of pedestrian crashes. On the other hand, vehicular movements also get obstructed due to the pedestrian activities carried out on the carriageway. During pedestrian crossing maneuvers, pedestrians often force the approaching vehicle(s) either to slow down or to change the lane which leads to reduction in the average speed of traffic stream. However, in case of pedestrians walking along the road, vehicles tend to shy away towards the center of carriageway to ensure the safe movements of pedestrians. Hence, pedestrians irrespective of crossing or walking along the road, eventually results in the reduction in speed as well as capacity of the road and sometimes prove to be a promising threat to safety of the road users. Therefore, in order to delve into the phenomena of pedestrian-vehicle interaction, one should need to study the mutual influences of pedestrian and vehicular movements on each other. In this background, this paper puts forward a detailed literature review on the assessment of pedestrian-vehicle interaction on urban roads. Findings of the paper are specific and infer the behaviors of both pedestrians and vehicles while sharing the same road space.

The author writes about an initiative to open a border crossing between Poland and Ukraine in the Bieszczady village of Wołosate, concentrating particularly on the social actors involved and showing their positions: the Bieszczady National Park, the Bieszczady Border Guard Division, local society, the Polish state, and also tourists, ecologists, and other activists engaged in the affair. The author’s reflections are based on statements gathered during a stay in Wołosate and Ustrzyki Górne in July 2014 and on other opinions regarding the question. These considerations differentiate, at the theoretical level, between the border administration and society, and enable the marked specificity of this fragment of the Polish-Ukrainian border to be perceived.

Tetraploid rye was crossed with different tetraploid triticale lines. The F₁ generation of tetraploid rye × tetraploid triticale hybrids was backcrossed with 4x rye. After backcrossing, all BC₁-F₁ plants were subjected to open pollination, whereas in the BC₁-F₂ generations only plants with wheat chromosomes in their karyotypes were open-pollinated. Substitution, addition and addition-substitution lines of wheat chromosomes in tetraploid rye were isolated from the F₂ and F₃ of BC₁. In 60 plants of BC₁-F₂, 59 chromosomes from the A genome and 9 from the B genome of wheat were recovered. The wheat chromosomes were monosomic except for five plants which were disomic, viz. 1A and 5A in two plants each, and a translocated 3AS/5AL in one plant. In 235 BC₁-F₃ plants, 174 wheat addition and substitution chromosomes were found, 143 from the A genome and 31 from the B genome. All wheat chromosomes except 3A from the A genome and four chromosomes from the B genome - 2B, 3B, 5B and 7B were recovered. The number of substitutions ranged from one to four per plant, only two plants having four. In the group of addition plants the number of added wheat chromosomes ranged from one to two, and in the case of addition-substitution plants — from two to four. Wheat chromosomes occurred in monosomic form, except 10 plants. Six substitution plants were disomic for 1 A, 2A, 5A, 7A, 2B and 3B, respectively. One was disomic for 1A and 5A in two addition plants. Two addition-substitution plants were double disomic: 1A and 5A - in one, and 1A and 3B in the other. In the BC₁-F₃ generation, 23 different translocations were found, four of which occurred between wheat chromosomes and the remaining 19 - between wheat and rye chromosomes. Translocated chromosomes were monosomic, except four plants. Two of them were disomic for 3AS/4RL, one for 4AS/4RS and one for 7AS/7RS. The fertility of both addition and substitution plants ranged from 0 to 38.0 seeds/spike, regardless of the chromosome number, with a mean of 9.61 seeds/spike. Plants with 28 chromosomes showed singnificantly higher fertility than plants with 29 and more chromosomes, except additoion plants with chromosomes 5A and 5B. The analysis of the influence of particular wheat chromosomes on plant fertility showed that both substitution and addition plants with chromosome 6A had the highest average fertility, while plants with chromosome 2B in substitution lines as well as plants with chromosome 2A in addition and addition-substitution lines had the lowest fertility.

Many species of Cuphea genus show promise as rich natural sources of valuable seed oils for commercial utility. Among them are C. lanceolata and C. viscosissima which seed oils contain medium-chain fatty acids. Reciprocal crosses were made between these species to assess their usefulness for Cuphea breeding program. The degree of crossability between C. lanceolata and C. viscosissima was determined by pollen grain germination and pollen tube growth observed using fluorescence microscopy in addition to capsule formation and seed number per capsule. Treatment of the pollen grain with a laser microbeam reduced the number of germinated pollen grains, tubes growth in the pistil and seed set when C. viscosissima plants were used in the crosses as a female form. In the cross C. lanceolata (female form) × C. viscosissima the pollen treatment with a laser microbeam improved pollen tube growth but reduced seed set. Crossability evaluated on the basis of pollen tube growth and seed set showed unilateral interspecific incompatibility in crosses involving C. lanceolata plants as a female form.

In this work, safety analysis at the railway level crossings is presented using advanced mathematical modelling. Resistivity of track subgrade panels is taken into account. The analysis does not refer to the assessment of the current regulations. Specific cases of generalized dynamic system are considered by introducing operations S=Δ, S=P defined in space C(N) of real sequences. In this model, generalized discrete exponential and trigonometric functions that reflect the oscillatory nature of the analysed quantities are used. The advantage of the analyzes is the avoidance of numerical errors. We show also the importance of the resistivity of track subgrade panels in safety at the level crossings. The safety at the level crossings can be increased through providing track subgrade panels with appropriate resistivity to minimize negative effect of stray currents. The results may be used to evaluate selected safety indicators as well as to predict safety levels and to determine the ways of improving safety.
W pracy analizowane jest bezpieczeństwo na jednopoziomowych skrzyżowaniach linii kolejowej z drogą, także z punktu widzenia znaczenia rezystancyjności płyt podtorowych. Prowadzona analiza dotyczy bezpieczeństwa i generalnie nie odnosi się do oceny obecnie obwiązujących przepisów. W procesie badania bezpieczeństwa pomocne jest zaawansowane modelowanie matematyczne. Do modelowania zostaną wykorzystane szczególne przypadki uogólnionych układów dynamicznych poprzez wprowadzenie do ich modelu operacji S=Δ,S=P określonych na przestrzeni C(N) ciągów rzeczywistych. W modelu tym kluczowe znaczenie mają uogólnione dyskretne funkcje wykładnicze i trygonometryczne oddające oscylacyjny charakter analizowanych wielkości. Stworzono uniwersalne modele (także przydatne do wykorzystania w innych krajach), wykorzystujące dyskretne układy dynamiczne o oscylacyjnych właściwościach w odniesieniu do liczby wypadków, do liczby wypadków z podziałem na ich udział na przejazdach kolejowych poszczególnych kategorii do liczby poszkodowanych itp. W analizie problemów może też być wykorzystywany ich losowy charakter. Zaletą prowadzonych analiz jest uniknięcie błędów numerycznych. Wskaźnik NRV forsowany przez UE jest co najmniej dyskusyjny. W praktyce należy też wykorzystywać innowacyjne metody, w których np. jako źródło do uruchomienia sygnałów ostrzegawczych na przejazdach kolejowych mogą być stosowane drgania akustyczne pojazdu szynowego przekazywane do szyn przez toczące się koła pojazdu szynowego. Pokazano też znaczenie rezystancyjności płyt podtorowych dla bezpieczeństwa na przejazdach kolejowo - drogowych. Szyny układane na płytach podtorowych nie mogą być w praktyce całkowicie izolowane od ziemi. Pewna więc część prądu trakcyjnego, płynącego przez szyny, może odgałęziać się do ziemi, tworząc tzw. prądy błądzące. Wartość oporności przejścia z szyn do ziemi zależna jest od sposobu budowy i konstrukcji nawierzchni kolejowej (np. nawierzchnia bezpodsypkowa), rodzaju podtorza i warunków atmosferycznych (wilgoć i temperatura).

Genetic analysis of two rye interline crosses and a set of wheat/rye chromosomal addition lines was performed to reveal the mechanism underlying wide variation range of alpha-amylase activity in sound grain. The long arm of chromosome 6R was found to be responsible for increased enzyme synthesis during late stages of triticale grain maturation. Only nuclear genes seemed to control alpha-amylase activity, as reciprocal crosses between rye lines showed no maternal effects. Low enzyme activity showed complete dominance over high level of its synthesis. Segregation ratios, observed in F₂ and BC₁ crosses, indicated that recessive alleles at two independent duplicative loci underlie intensive alpha-amylase production.

The paper presents findings from research project Mobis which is aimed at developing a method of assessing safety of unsignalised pedestrian road crossings using video image analysis. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic has been recorded at selected zebra crossing sites in Warsaw and Wrocław, before and after installation of active signage systems SignFlash and Levelite. Speeds of approaching vehicles were measured and drivers’ behaviour was classified using video analysis. The paper presents a comparison of effectiveness of systems such as SignFlash and Levelite based on changes in the mean and standard deviation of vehicle spot speeds as well as changes in speed profiles of vehicles approaching the crossings. Results indicate that both SignFlash and Levelite active signage reduce mean vehicle approach speeds and have a positive impact on drivers’ behaviour.
Celem referatu jest przedstawienie wyników oceny skuteczności zastosowania aktywnego oznakowania na przejściach dla pieszych. Artykuł prezentuje częściowe rezultaty projektu MOBIS (finansowanego przez Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju), który ma na celu opracowanie metody oceny bezpieczeństwa ruchu na przejściach dla pieszych bez sygnalizacji przy pomocy analizy obrazu wideo. Na wybranych przejściach dla pieszych w Warszawie i we Wrocławiu ruch pieszych i pojazdów był rejestrowany przed i po instalacji oznakowania aktywnego SignFlash i Levelite, które to systemy sygnalizują obecność pieszych na przejściu. Przy pomocy analizy obrazu dokonano pomiarów prędkości pojazdów zbliżających się do przejścia oraz klasyfikacji zachowań kierowców pojazdów. Sklasyfikowano 4 rodzaje możliwych sytuacji: pojazd przejeżdża tuż przed pieszym, który jest w tym momencie na przejściu dla pieszych (A1); pojazd przejeżdża przed pieszym, który jest w tym momencie na chodniku (A2); pojazd przejeżdża tuż za pieszym; który jest w tym momencie na przejściu dla pieszych (B); kierowca widząc pieszego zwalnia lub zatrzymuje się przed przejściem (C).

The genetic basis of the resistance of the common cypress to Seridium cardinale was investigated in the environmental condition of Central Italy. The cortical canker caused by the fungus affects the common cypress since the 1970’s in Europe and the genetic improvement for the resistance is considered an effective tool to cope with the bark canker epidemics. General and specific combining abilities of thirty mother plants were estimated by means of a North Carolina II mating design including four cypress clones as testers showing divergent degree of canker resistance. The strong differences among testers and general combining effects showed that the character under investigation has an additive genetic control. The best combinations were identified within the families from the crosses with the resistant tester. The results however showed that an early classification of the mother trees, based on a simple unreplicated resistance screening test, is not effective to predict the behaviour in crosses. Replicated screening tests based on morpho-physiological and chemical characteristics are suggested, because the bark canker resistant traits is not sufficiently stable in cypress trees.

Opis:
Public and private stakeholders that operate land border crossings are increasingly concerned about long wait times for trucks crossing from Mexico into the United States. Long wait times are detrimental to the regional competiveness, supply chain operations, the environment in the region adjacent to the border crossings, and to the overall economic development. In order to have reliable and systematic information on border crossing time and delay, a system to measure travel time through the border is required. This paper describes the basic border crossing operations at the Texas/Mexico border that serves as the foundation to identify a technology that could be used to collect border crossing information. The design and deployment processes that were used for the implementation of the border crossing time measurement system for U.S.-bound commercial vehicles are described. The paper also presents the results of the system that was developed to disseminate border crossing and wait time data. Benefits to supply chain operators at land border crossings and next steps in the development of more border-related performance measures are described.
