In this study, Ni-SiC composite coatings were electroplated on the 5xxx series aluminium alloy substrate. The effect of the quantity (25g/l i 50g/l) and the size (3 m, 0,41 m and 50nm) of SiC particles introduced into the bath as a dispersed phase on properties of the coatings was tested. The influence of these parameters on thickness, microhardness, surface structure, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance of nickel composite coatings was determined.
W niniejszej pracy powłoki Ni-SiC, osadzano elektrolitycznie na stopie aluminium serii 5xxx. Przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczące wpływu ilości (25g/l i 50g/l) oraz wielkości cząstek SiC (3 m, 0,41 m oraz 50nm), wprowadzanych do kąpieli niklowych jako faza zdyspergowana, na właściwości otrzymanej powłoki niklowej. Określono wpływ tych parametrów na grubość, mikrotwardość, strukturę powierzchni, odporność na ścieranie oraz odporność korozyjną otrzymanych kompozytowych powłok niklowych.

The paper presents a study on corrosion behaviour and tribological properties of nickel composite coatings deposited by electrochemical method on aluminium alloy from 2xxx series (AlCu4MgSi). The nickel composite coatings were produced in a Watts bath of the following chemical composition: NiSO4·7H2O 150 g/l, NiCl2·6H2O 30 g/l, H3BO3 30 g/l with the addition of saccharin in an amount of 2 g/l. As hard ceramic dispersed particles embedded in the coating, alumina (Al2O3) was used in an amount of 12,5; 25; 50 and 75 g/l. Coatings were produced using cathodic current density of 6 A/dm2, bath temperature of 60°C, pH 4, and the time 60 minutes. The electroplating bath was stirred with a mechanical stirrer (350 rpm). The results obtained were compared with a nickel coating deposited without the ceramic particles. It was found that the presence of Al2O3 increases the wear resistance of composite coatings, but does not significantly improve the corrosion properties.

The results of research on preparations of alloy Ni-B/B composite coatings produced by chemical reduction method on a carbon steel substrate are collected in this paper. The alloy Ni-B coatings were also investigated for comparative purposes. The produced coatings were subjected to a heat treatment process. The boron powder with the particles size below 1 μm was used as the dispersion phase. The structure of the coatings was examined by X-ray diffraction method. Boron powder particles as well as surface morphology and topography were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The roughness test, microhardness and corrosion resistance by potentiodynamic method and surface wettability tests were carried out. Analysis of the chemical composi-tion by the EDS method showed that the boron powder particles were evenly embedded in the entire volume of the coating. Ni-B/Bcomposite coatings are characterized by higher hardness than alloy Ni-B coatings. As a result of heat treatment, the Ni3 B phase crystallized, which increased the hardness of the coating material. The incorporation of boron powder particles and heat treatment reduce the corrosion resistance of coatings. All produced coatings exhibited hydrophobic properties.

Chrome plating is used to improve the properties of metal surfaces like hardness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance in machine building. To further improve these properties, an electrodeposited chromium coating on steel, modified with nanodiamond particles is proposed. The nanodiamond particles (average size 4 nm measured by TEM) are produced by detonation synthesis (NDDS). The composite coating (Cr+NDDS) has an increased thickness, about two times greater microhardness and finer micro-structure compared to that of unmodified chromium coating obtained under the same galvanization conditions. In the microstructure of specimen obtained from chrome electrolyte with concentration of NDDS 25 g/l or more, “minisections” with chromium shell were found. They were identified by metallographic microscope and X-ray analyser on etched section of chromium plated sample. The object of further research is the dependence of the presence of NDDS in the composite coating from the nanodiamond particles concentration in the chroming electrolyte.

The paper deals with the assessment of systems properties on the heating coat basis - the steel substrate in terms of the adhesion and coatings structure. On S235JRG1 steel substrate the ceramic and composite coatings on the Al2O3 basis were made for research purpose by the technology of plasma heating spraying with a water stabilized arc. The content effect of Ni metallic component to the base Al2O3 powder was examined on the adhesion and composite coatings structure. Adhesion tests were examined in terms of STN EN 582 (Thermal spraying. Determination of tensile adhesive strength). Coatings were further evaluated by a hardness measurement, chemical and microscopic analysis. Adhesion tests proved the Ni metallic powder addition markedly increases the adhesion of composite heating sprayed coatings and allows their creation without an interlayer utilization. The composite coating contains fewer defects in term of pores and cavities occurrence and rifts in the first place which are caused by dilatation strains during a setting process.
Praca dotyczy oceny właściwości płaszcza grzewczego pod względem przyczepności powłok do stalowego podłoża i ich struktury. Do celów badawczych na stalowym podłożu S235JRG1 metodą natryskiwania plazmowego wykonane zostały ceramiczne i kompozytowe powłoki na bazie Al2O3. Badano wpływ zawartości metalicznego niklu do bazowego proszku Al2O3 na przyczepność powłoki kompozytowej i jej strukturę. Badania adhezji wykonano zgodnie z norma EN 582 (Natryskiwanie cieplne - określanie przyczepności metodą odrywania). Powłoki były następnie poddane pomiarom twardości, analizie chemicznej i mikroskopowej. Badania adhezji dowiodły, że dodanie metalicznego proszku Ni znacznie zwiększa adhezje kompozytowych powłok i umożliwia ich tworzenie bez warstwy pośredniej. Powłoka kompozytowa ma mniej wad: porów, ubytków i szczelin, które powodowane są przez naprężenia objętościowe w trakcie procesu osadzania.

The microstructure and macroscopic properties of WC-50Ni+stellite 1(Co-Cr-W, ST1) coating layer fabricated by HVOF spray have been investigated. WC-50Ni powder and ST1 powders were mixed in the ratio of 1:0 and 5:5 wt.%, respectively. Argon heat treatment (Ar) and high-frequency heat treatment (H.F.) were conducted on the coating materials. WC was decomposed in the Ar heat treatment specimen, but decomposition of WC was not observed in the H.F. heat treatment specimen. Hardness was measured for as-sprayed WC-50Ni (821.5Hv) and as-sprayed WC-50Ni+ST1 (668.1 Hv). Hardness of Ar heat treatment specimen was reduced by about 14~18% than that of the as-sprayed coating layers. However, when the H.F. heat treatment was performed, the hardness inversely increased by about 6~10% than the as-sprayed coating layer. Based on these results, the method to improve the mechanical property of HVOF sprayed WC-50Ni+ST1 coating layer has also been also discussed.

A356 Al composites reinforced by short carbon fiber were prepared through the 2-step process: fabrication of a composite precursor and ultrasonication of the precursor melt. The short carbon fibers were coated with 0.15~1.5 μm thick SiC layer by a car-bothermal reaction, and an amount of the carbon fiber reinforcement was determined to be 1.5 vol.% and 4.0 vol.%, respectively. The addition of the carbon fiber increased the hardness of A356 alloy. However, tensile strength did not increase in the as-cast composites regardless of the SiC coating and volume fraction of the carbon fiber, due to the debonding which reduced load transfer efficiency from matrix to fiber at the interface. After T6-treatment of the composites, a significant increase in strength occurred only in the composite reinforced by the SiC-coated short carbon fiber, which was considered to result from the formation of a precipitate improving the Al/SiC interfacial strength.

The purpose of this study was to produce composite thin films with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix with nanoparticles of silicon dioxide (SiO2 ) as the reinforcing phase (5 and 10%) using spin coating method and to investigate the influence of mass concentration of silica particles and process parameters on the morphology and optical properties of the obtained PVP/SiO2 nanocomposite coatings. The composite layer topography examination, made using atomic force microscope (AFM), showed the increase of roughness due to the increase of silica mass concentration in thin films. UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis showed that with the increase of SiO2 nanoparticles in polymer matrix and use of higher rotation speed, the absorbance level decrease. Besides, composite layers with 10% mass concentration relative to polymer concentration were characterized by wider energy band gap, so it can be concluded that obtained nanocomposite thin films can be used as protective layers against UV radiation, with zero absorption in the range of visible light wavelengths.

The study presents investigations of an influence of various direct current densities on microstructure, residual stresses, texture, microhardness and corrosion resistance of the nickel coatings electrodeposited from modified Watt’s baths. The properties of obtained coatings were compared to the nano-crystalline composite Ni/Al2O3 coatings prepared under the same plating conditions. The similarities and differences of the obtained coatings microstructures visible on both their surfaces and cross sections and determined properties were presented. The differences in the growth character of the Ni matrix and in the microstructural properties were observed. All electrodeposited Ni and Ni/Al2O3 coatings were compact and well adhering to the steel substrates. The thickness and the microhardness of the Ni and Ni/Al2O3 deposits increased significantly with the current density in the range 2 - 6 A/dm2. Residual stresses are tensile and they reduced as the current density increased. The composite coatings revealed better protection from the corrosion of steel substrate than pure nickel in solution 1 M NaCl.

Plasma spraying is a process widely used to fabricate wear resistant coatings. However, various problems are associated with plasma spraying out of which poor bonding strength between the coating and the substrate and the high porosity in the as sprayed coatings are of major concern. In order to eliminate these problems and enhance wear performance, the laser remelting process has been used. The laser remelting of plasma sprayed Mo coatings alters the wear mechanism and improves the wear resistance. The wear mechanism and wear volume loss depend on the applied load, sliding speed and sliding distance. Hence, an effort has been made to investigate the effect of process parameters on volume loss using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based mathematical models. The experiments were planned as per Central Composite Design (CCD). The investigations revealed that the applied load was the most dominant factor affecting the volume loss of the coating. The sliding speed, sliding distance and interaction effects were considered as the next important parameters influencing the volume loss. The investigation also reveals that, the wear volume loss depends on two wear mechanisms, one being the formations of grooves along surface tribo films and other being fracture of splats with delamination of the coating.

The paper presents basic knowledge about producing and some results of tribological and metallographical research on composite layers with porous, anodic hard coating matrix which were modified with glassy carbon nanotubes. These composite layers were formed as surface layers of machine parts operating under conditions of sparse lubrication (limited lubrication) and friction in air. The layers were tested at sliding mating with EN-GJL-350 cast iron used for piston rings in combustion engines and air compressors. On the basis of the metallographical tests was the structure of the composite layer described. It was fount that on the surface of the oxide is a glassy carbon layer and in the pores of oxide are regullary carbon nanotubes. On the basis of the obtained results of tribological tests it was found that glassy carbon layer on the oxide surface shorts the wering-in time, and the glassy carbon nanotubes formed inside the pores of anodic hard coating upon EN-AW-6061 aluminum alloy prove to be effective solid lubricants and complement lubrication function of the graphite in cast iron. Consequently the coefficient of friction was lower than in case of nanotubes-free oxide layers.
W pracy przedstawiono podstawy wytwarzania oraz wyniki badan metalograficznych i tribologicznych warstw kompozytowych na osnowie porowatej, anodowej warstwy tlenkowej modyfikowanej weglem szklistym. Warstwy te zostały wytworzone jako warstwy powierzchniowe czesci maszyn współpracujacych slizgowo w warunkach ograniczonego smarowania (oszczednego) oraz w warunkach tarcia technicznie suchego. Warstwy te zostały przebadane we współpracy slizgowej z zeliwem EN GJL 350 uzywanym na pierscienie tłokowe silników spalinowych i tłokowych sprezarek powietrza. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badan metalograficznych okreslono budowe i strukture warstw kompozytowych, stwierdzajac ze na powierzchni tlenku wytwarza sie warstewka wegla szklistego, a wewnatrz porów sa regularne nanorurki weglowe. Na podstawie badan tribologicznych stwierdzono, ze znajdujaca sie na powierzchni warstewka wegla szklistego skraca czas docierania skojarzenia a nanorurki weglowe wytworzone w porach anodowej warstwy tlenkowej na stopie aluminium EN-AW-6061 sa skutecznym srodkiem smarowym i wspomagaja funkcje smarne grafitu znajdujacego sie w zeliwie. Współczynnik tarcia w skojarzeniu z warstwa kompozytowa był mniejszy niz w skojarzeniu z warstwa tlenkowa.
