Opis:
Emigration is a chronic structural process of the Portuguese society. The discussion and key arguments raised in this chapter are mainly focused on data from a research project on Portuguese skilled emigration. Based on the outcomes of the BRADRAMO2 on-line survey to 1011 highly skilled emigrants it can be suggested that recent phenomena in general, and the crisis that began around 2008 in particular, profoundly transformed the patterns of Portuguese emigration. Nowadays, the country faces a brain drain dynamic that is dramatically altering the profiles of national emigrants, emigration destinations, self-identity, and the strategies of those who leave the country. Academic mobility, mainly that promoted by the European Union (through grants from the Erasmus Program), created and fostered mobility flows that reinforced a latent mobility phenomenon. Once engaged in academic mobility programs, Portuguese higher education students tend to stay in the country of destination or, upon returning temporarily to Portugal, to evince a very strong predisposition to move to a country of the European Union. The profile of Portuguese high-skilled emigrants reveals a trend towards a permanent and a long-term (as opposed to a temporary or transitory) mobility, an insertion in the primary segment of the labor market of the destination countries, a predominance of professionals connected to the academic/scientific system and to professions requiring high skills, and a latent mobility (aft er a period of study in the country of destination) rather than direct mobility flows (after having entered in the employment system of the sending country).

This article aims at studying the mobility of Polish highly skilled female workers who live in Italy, and at analysing their integration into the society and the labour market, with particular reference to the problem of brain waste. Using the biographical approach we analyse the reasons for migration from a transnational perspective. We highlight the active role of the Polish social network that explains the high presence of Polish people in Rome, determined by more than purely economic reasons. Eventually, in the light of brain waste, we try to understand the role of the academic and career paths by looking into possible problems related to the adequate utilisation of professional competences and acknowledgement of the level of educational attainment.

Psychedelics, as a plant-derived material, have been used for millennia in reli- gious and medical practices. They produce an altered state of consciousness characterized by distortions of perception, hallucinations, dissolution of self boun- daries and the experience of unity with the world. Classic psychedelics, also known as serotonergic hallucinogens, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin were extensively investigated in substance-assisted psychotherapy during the 1950s–1960s. These early clinical studies reported improvement rates in patients with various forms of depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol dependen- ce. The development of modern neuroimaging techniques renewed interest in the investigation of psychedelics as a class of drugs that may reopen multiple the- rapeutic benefits. Current behavioral and neurochemical data show that psy- chedelics induce their psychological effects primarily via 5-hydroxytryptamine type 2A (5-HT2A) receptor activation and modulate neural circuits involved in mood and affective disorders. Clinical trials examining psilocybin have suggested that the compound relieves symptoms of depression and anxiety with rapid onset and longer duration. Serotonergic psychedelics enhance expression of neurotro- phic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as well as expres- sion of genes associated with synaptic plasticity and stimulate synapse formation. These effects are similar to those produced by fast-acting antidepressant keta- mine. Basic science research can reveal the neural mechanism of psychedelics action and how they can be used for treatment.

Theory of mind (ToM) refers to the ability to represent the mental states of others. The Executive Function (EF) refers to higher-level cognitive processes encompassing planning, inhibition, coordination, shifting, and coordination of action sequences. Current studies on ToM and EF suggest that these two cognitive abilities might be functionally or anatomically linked. Although the relation between ToM and EF has been widely investigated, the results remain inconclusive particularly when considering the functional architecture of a mature brain system. The present study aims to seek this lacuna with the use of neuropsychological methodology. The pattern of ToM and EF defi cits within patients with brain injury were investigated. We compared the performance of four patients with a set of tasks examining theory of mind abilities and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) assessing EF functioning. Results yielded a dissociation between ToM and EF, suggesting that in an adults’ brain executive functions are not necessary for inferring the mental states of others.

Nervous system is characterized by its uniqueness in cells origin, their variability, electrical properties of the nervous cell membrane, response to external signals, neuronal network and changes in synapses activity that are the basis of higher brain functions, such as learning and memory. Brain is a superior organ of human body with an extremely efficient regulation system. Apart from protein and small-molecule regulators, ribonucleic acids (RNAs), especially noncoding proteins (ncRNAs), play a crucial controlling role in the brain. They are present in every cell, from bacteria to primates and have regulatory, catalytic as well as structural function. Many specific ncRNAs have been identified in human brain, responsible for development and functioning. Disturbances in ncRNA synthesis and mechanism of action are connected to diseases such as autism, schizophrenia, Alzheimer disease, Prader-Willi syndrome and others.

Authors present an overview of hierarchical control of saccades, explaining why the saccadic refixation response is a cortically mediated activity. The time structure of saccadix refixation is discussed focusing on the long latency of response, which cannot be justified by physiological transmission delays. Cortical saccades procrastination is described based on the Professor Carpenter LATER Model. It is followed by the discussion of bioengineering aspects of saccadometry covering the selection of appropriate measurement technology and the expert system based eye movement signal analysis, aimed on extracting physiologically valid information about the brain functional status. Several examples are presented of the potential applicatio ns of saccadometry, including monitoring of severity and recovery from brain concussion, head exposure to high accelerations happening in contact sports, monitoring adaptation to high altitude and controlling mountain sickness, monitoring the neurodegenerative processes taking place in Huntington and Alzheimer diseases, as well as the possibility to optimize the placement of electrodes for deep brain stimulation. The concluding remark is: that the high sensitivity but low specificity of saccadic disturbances, usually considered as being disadvantageous for differential neurological diagnosis, should be seen as saccades main advantage, allowing to detect broad spectrum of brain dysfunctions at their earliest stage of development.

The article describes vocational trajectories of migrant doctors who work in Poland. A typology of careers is introduced. It encompasses three models: migrants who graduate from Polish medical schools, migrants from third (non-EU) countries who come to work in Poland after graduation, an “intra-European” migrants, who benefit from the free movement of workers and services in the European Union. The statistical part situates the discussed issues in the macro-sociological context, demonstrating the main countries of origin, countries of medical education and frequency of naturalization. The qualitative study focuses on a description of individual motivations for migration and work in Poland. The study indicates that in the case of labor migration the reasons for international mobility include (also) non-economic, cultural factors, for example reluctance to work in the grey market in the sending country, where low official income is compensated by bribes.

Traumatic brain injuries to the frontal lobes are associated with many maladaptive forms of behavior. We investigated the association between brain damage and impulsivity, as measured by the rate of delay discounting (i.e., the extent to which future outcomes are devalued in time). The main aim of this study was to test the hypothesis of steeper discounting of different amounts in a group of patients with frontal lobe damage. We used a delay discounting task in the form of a structured interview. A total of 117 participants were divided into five groups: three neurological groups and two groups without brain damage. Our analyses showed that patients with focal damage to the frontal lobes demonstrated steeper delay discounting than other participants. Other clinical groups demonstrated similar discounting rates. The data pattern related to the magnitude effect on the group level suggested that the magnitude effect is absent in the group of patients with damage to the frontal lobes; however, results were less consistent on an individual level. Amount-dependent discounting was observed in only two groups, the healthy control group and the neurological group with other cortical areas damaged.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data are acquired as a natively complex data set, however for various reasons the phase data is typically discarded. Over the past few years, interest in incorporating the phase information into the analyses has been growing and new methods for modeling and processing the data have been developed. In this paper, we provide an overview of approaches to understand the complex nature of fMRI data and to work with the utilizing the full information, both the magnitude and the phase. We discuss the challenges inherent in trying to utilize the phase data, and provide a selective review with emphasis on work in our group for developing biophysical models, preprocessing methods, and statistical analysis of the fully-complex data. Of special emphasis are the use of data-driven approaches, which are particularly useful as they enable us to identify interesting patterns in the complex-valued data without making strong assumptions about how these changes evolve over time, something which is challenging for magnitude data and even more so for the complex data. Finally, we provide our view of the current state of the art in this area and make suggestions for what is needed to make efficient use of the fully-complex fMRI data.

Opis:
Post-medieval Poland has been a country of emigration rather than immigration. Consequently, research on the former has dominated and there have been few studies on the latter process. Moreover, due to the character of immigration to Poland, there is nearly no research on highly skilled immigrants. The author of this text is primarily interested in the recent migrations of scientists. This kind of mobility is not completely unique but has some interesting characteristics. For instance, migrating scientists have better control over their life chances, their situation on the labour market is usually good, they have a relatively high status. This kind of mobility can be analyzed from the point of view of sociology of science as a global and local (national) enterprise; from the point of view of ethnography of scientific collaboration; but also from the traditional, for migration studies, point of view of the dynamics of culture contact, i.e. broadly understood assimilation processes, building of cultural ghettoes, or resistance to incoming aliens depriving the local people of attracting jobs.

For small, low-to-middle-income countries such as North Macedonia, the prospect of young, educated people leaving their place of residence (i.e. emigrating) can have significant negative societal-level effects. Understanding the complexity of the brain-drain phenomenon and its antecedents is critical to developing multi-level (i.e. global, societal and individual) strategic solutions. A qualitative analysis of several focus-group interviews was used to understand young, educated residents’ reasons either for emigrating or for remaining in North Macedonia. Two overarching themes served to organise the participant-identified drivers for emigration and those opposed to it. Three sub-themes emerged describing the factors for emigration: 1) a lack of professional opportunities, 2) institutional systems, and 3) cultural tightness. Likewise, three sub-themes emerged describing the factors for staying: 1) community, 2) culture and 3) social responsibility. Insights serve to contextualise some of the experiences of young, educated people in small, low-to-middle-income, countries which impact on their emigration decisions.

METHODOLOGY
Opis:
The aim of this paper is to discuss the most important methodological issues related to the study of ‘academic migration’, which we have encountered while preparing a research project on foreign-born academics in Poland. These issues are presented in the context of the migration of other highly skilled workers. Many of the analysed articles which concern migration of the highly skilled fall into methodological traps. Some do not take into account important cultural variables; others are concentrated on very specific problems, and – by employing sophisticated statistical techniques – provide conclusions of very limited generality. We start our analysis with the discussion of the most common research problems. Then we move on to discussing sources of data and methodologies. The last part summarizes the main advantages and disadvantages of various methodological approaches often employed in academic migration studies. This study allows us to outline our above-mentioned research proposal. Drawing on this example we show how a qualitative research project may add to current knowledge concerning the group in question. Nevertheless, this subject is diffi cult per se, and some challenges seem impossible to overcome.

Drawing on 40 interviews with Polish graduates of domestic universities who migrated to England after 2004, this paper suggests that the cultural capital accumulated through higher education at prestigious universities in Poland led to the emergence of new middle class graduates. This had an effect in "brain training" after migration, observed as enrollment into institutions of higher education in England. The research also implies that the newly educated middle class resembles British "professionals" and focuses on those who use "brain training" as a strategy in preparation for return and commencement of a new life in Poland. Finally, the paper raises the issue of brain circulation of the Polish new middle class graduates in the context of tuition fee increases at English universities, what may potentially lead to making "brain training" investments elsewhere in Europe.

Study of musical-acoustic influences, which are used to improve the functional state of a person, as well as her/his neurophysiological or psychological rehabilitation, is very relevant nowadays. It is related with a large number of conflict situations, significant psychological and informational overloads of modern human, permanent stress due to the pandemic, economic crisis, natural and man-made disasters. This work examines the effect of listening to low-frequency music on the percentage of alpha, beta, delta, and theta waves in the total spectral power of the electroencephalogram in the frequency band 0.5–30 Hz. To obtain rhythms of the brain the spectral analysis of filtered native electroencephalogram was used. For statistical analysis of neural oscillations the Student’s t-test and the sign test were implemented with usage of the Lilliefors normality criterion and the Shapiro-Wilk test. Statistically significant differences were identified in alpha, theta and delta oscillations. For the beta rhythm presented music did not play any significant role. An increase in the activity of the alpha rhythm in the temporal (for 2.20 percentage point), central (for 1.51 percentage point), parietal (for 2.70 percentage point), occipital (for 2.22 percentage point) leads of the right hemisphere and the parietal (for 1.74 percentage point) and occipital (for 2.46 percentage point) leads of the left hemisphere and also of the theta rhythm in the temporal leads of the left hemisphere (for 1.13 percentage point) were observed. The downfall of delta rhythm in the frontal lead of the left hemisphere (for 1.51 percentage point) and occipital in both hemispheres (for 1.64 and 1.33 percentage points respectively in the left and right hemispheres) was detected. These may indicate that listening to low-frequency compositions helps to restore the brain in physiological conditions at different functional overload levels, decrease the level of emotional tone, and promote relaxation.
