Opis:
The article discusses the complex issues related to 19th-century reproductive prints. Its starting point is the oeuvre of Feliks Stanisław Jasiński, a Polish engraver who was mainly active in France. He specialized in reproductive prints of works of art, and is a relatively well- -known and researched figure in the history of Polish graphic arts. Outlining the context for his activities also becomes a contribution to reflections on the place of reproductive prints in 19th century artistic culture, as well as an attempt to define a framework for considering this type of graphic production. In citing various examples of modern reproductive graphics, its diversity is proven. Theses on the primacy of the criterion of “fidelity” and technological determination in the history of reproduction are rejected. Instead, the complex links between this field and various aspects of artistic culture are pointed out. Particular emphasis is placed on the links between the functions, form and production methods of such prints. Chief consideration is given to the type of reproductive graphics made by using traditional metal techniques, which apart from their informative functions, also performed important artistic functions, as evidenced by the described phenomena occurring with- in this field in the second half of the 19th century, and the accompanying written tradition, formed since the 18th century.

Such phenomenon as inner speech presents not only the protagonist's outlook, their emotional state or social aspects, but also demonstrates, under the influence of extraordinary factors, the intensity of affect expression in the addresser's speech activity. Inner speech in an emotive situation is marked by peculiar characteristics, which indicates its unique multidimensional essence.

The paper presents the technology and organization of the artistic cast production. On the basis of the actual cast production system, the manufacturing process was shown, in particular sand–piece moulding, which is a very important process and a time-consuming part of the entire manufacture of the casts. The current state of the production process as well as the organization of the work and production technology were analysed with the use of methods and techniques of production improvement, the Lean Manufacturing concept and computer systems. The results of the analysis and studies were shown with use of schemes and graphs of the layout of the production resources, a flow chart of the production process, value stream mapping, and a costs table for the production and modernization of the moulding stage. The work has shown that there are possibilities to improve the artistic cast production system. This improvement leads to increased productivity, lower production costs of artistic casts and increased competitiveness of the foundry.

Opis:
Biographical interviews conducted among Polish émigré artists have revealed several key categories. One of them is the feeling of otherness, which turns out to be a complex and multifaceted category. In the artists’ ‘mythologies’ their sense of foreignness, otherness, and even awareness of the hostility of the outside world appears very often and becomes part of their biographies and artistic ethos. Emigration generally exacerbates this condition. In the emigrant experience, the foreignness of the new place of residence and prolonged absence from the home country has its consequences. Very often emigré artists experience a dual sense of otherness: in the home country that they have left and in the new place of residence. However, this does not mean that the feeling is connected solely with suffering. Many artists are able to use this feeling to find subject matter and stimulation for creative work. These artists continually derive inspiration from being an outsider. The author uses  biographical material to show the different trajectories of foreignness and the various creative strategies used by emigré artists. Otherness is shown to be a key category of their experience but not an entirely unambiguous one.

The article summarizes part of the research conducted in 2015 with members of the art world within the framework of the project ‘The Artistic Brand as a Social Phenomenon: The Creation, Differentiation, and Role of Artistic Brands in Contemporary Poland.’ Thoughts on the subject of art brands lead to a description of the state of contemporary art in Poland. The definitions formulated by the respondents are compared to marketing theories, thus making it possible to determine the respondents’ level of knowledge of such theories. In conclusion, definitions of artistic brands are reviewed and supplemented on the basis of the material obtained from the research.

Opis:
Metamimesis, etymologically, is a combination of the Greek prefi x “meta” and mimeisthai, which was in use prior to the emergence of the Platonic tradition (Koller 1954). In the following work I argue that the methodological and technical aspect of classical category, mimesis, has been changing during the development of art and human thinking throughout the cultural history and philosophy.2 This work discusses hypotheses concerning functional and interdisciplinary, and potentiality of meaning of the category of metamimesis, especially: contemplative meaning (as the classical-philosophical) and – the original – performative meaning (according to A. Artaud: as a non-discursive and non-mendacious reality). The main part of the paper applies the category of metamimesis to interpret selected artistic practices, in particular the artistic performance of Iron Ship and Xavier le Roy’s Low pieces. Thus, it discloses the vast potentiality of the act of performance as a process involving contemplative and performative dimensions of human being – all participants of this process. The discussion concerns also the question about the limits of human thinking and ultimately the possible existence of a transcendental awareness. The article is an introduction to the study of potentiality of the category “metamimesis”.

Kalide, znanego artysty – odlewnika. Dodatkowo dokonano weryfikacji metodologii wykonania odlewu w celu wyeliminowania niedolewów, zapowietrzeń i innych wad odlewniczych. Podczas pracy wykonano wieloczęściową, elastyczną matrycę silikonową zabezpieczoną przed odkształceniami za pomocą pancerza gipsowego. Kopię „Bachantki na panterze” wykonano z gipsu protetycznego IV klasy twardości a następnie, w celu nadania jej zbliżonych do oryginału walorów wizualnych, pomalowano ją farbą akrylową imitującą mosiądz. Zgodność z oryginałem została określona przez zleceniodawcę na poziomie 99% co w przypadku kopii daje wynik bardzo dobry. Wykonana matryca elastyczna może posłużyć w przyszłości do wykonania kolejnej kopii.
Though unrestrained development of material engineering and manufacturing technology in XXI century manual labor of men is still irreplaceable. The article presents the case of manufacturing of plaster cast copy of art casting „Bachantka na panterze”, created in 1853 based on sculpture by T. E. Kalide, well known artist - foundry man. The article presents problems of making multidimensional matrix on indecomposable cast, points the materials selection criteria which can be safely used during the work, ensuring that any mechanical or chemical damage of original cast is made. Additionally verification of casting methodology was made to eliminate misruns, gaseous pores and other casting defects. During the work multidimensional, flexible, silicon matrix was made secured from deformation by gypsum armor. The copy of „Bachantka na panterze” was made of prosthetic gypsum of IVth class hardness, painted with acrylic paint imitating brass color to look like original one. The compliance with the original casting was estimated at 99% by the founding institution, what is a very good result. The matrix can be used in future to make another copy.

This article is an attempt at a critical and interdisciplinary analysis of the idea of the region. The author reviews and summarizes critical views of the idea in the discourses of architecture (Frampton, Koolhaas, Ibelings), art history (DaCosta, Kauffman, Piotrowski), and social anthropology (Gupta, Ferguson, Malkki, Bhabha). He then focuses on the example of the contemporary discourse on power, in which the concept of ‘region’ still functions in the form of implicit premises about the naturalness of differences and territorial and cultural divisions. The example is analyzed through the findings of the research project ‘Regional Foresight for Wielkopolska’ (2009–2011). The author’s conclusion points to the great dissonance between the discourse of modern humanities and the applied discourse of contemporary policy (including regional policy).

As part of the broader debate on the changing nature of the art sphere, the author raises the question of whether Poles’ degree of participation in art is still strongly connected with social position. He makes use of the categories of esthetic disposition and artistic competence in Pierre Bourdieu’s sense of the terms. He bases his conclusions on quantitative and qualitative data obtained from research into the tastes and cultural participation of Wrocław inhabitants in 2011. He analyses patterns of cultural engagement. While the general attitude toward art and knowledge of artists appears, in accord with the author’s hypothesis, to be connected with occupation, income, and education at the same time the distinctive power of ‘high culture’ has decreased among the young generation in comparison with the older generation. This leads the author to suppose that traditional forms of high culture are playing a lesser role in the creation of social boundaries, although this does not mean the erosion of cultural capital as such but rather the emergence of new forms of culture and new socio-cultural divisions.

Opis:
The social meaning of artistic creation derives from how works of art function, or how they are used. In this sense, the incorporation of a work of art into the realm of commercial relations does not depreciate art, but is a specific mode of its existence. An analysis of this mode reveals two antithetical types of logic behind the dissemination of art. One is the market logic that turns a work of art into a profit- -generating commodity through the sale/purchase acts in which it is involved. The other one is the mystical logic of ‘the bond between the owner and the possession’ - in this case between the artist and his or her work - which dates back to archaic forms of culture. The presence of this logic in commercial relations is reflected in the fact that a work of art acquires the status of ‘intellectual property’, which simultaneously restricts its free circulation and offers the prospect of unlimited profits to its owner. Thus, a work of art as ‘intellectual property’ turns out to be a hybrid whose disfunctionality is clearly exposed by the communication practices of the global network.

Opis:
The county of Spiš, consisting of enclaves within the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary, ethnically and religiously diverse, fre- quently administered by eminent personalities and situated on an important trade route, has played an important political and economic role over the centuries. The pawned towns of Spiš, which were never bought back, were the subject of claims by the southern neighbours of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until they were cut off from it in 1769 by a sanitary cordon imposed by the Imperial army. The return of the thirteen Spiš towns and the dominion of the Lubelsko-Podolinieckie province to the Kingdom of Hungary is a well-known occurrence, but tracing the detailed course of this process requires further research, in particular archival research. Bearing testament to this turbulent period are the documents preserved in Vienna’s Österreichisches Staatsarchiv related to żupan Jan Csáky de Keresztseg. The article discusses a letter from Jan Nepomucen Kirschner, parish priest in Żakowce, which describes the church decorations in major towns in the former starosty on the occasion of its incorporation into Hungary in November 1772. According to the brief account of Father Kirschner, the altars in the churches were adorned with Hungarian crowns and inscriptions citing biblical verses. Also mentioned is other archival material from the collection, which may enrich our knowledge of the course of these celebrations, such as the texts of the żupan’s speech and the townspeople’s oaths, as well as of those pieces composed in honour of Csáky, Maria Theresa and Joseph II. The discussed documents are a rare example of Spiš archival material containing descriptions of the decorations for a state ceremony in this area. According to the narrative of the ceremonial programme, the moment of incorporation of the thirteen towns and Lubowelski dominion into the Hungarian county is a triumph of justice – the lost parts of Spiš return to their rightful rulers, whose good governance will ensure peace and stability for the inhabitants of the region. The form and ideological message of the various elements of the ceremonial setting (both visual and literary) was relatively simple, probably in order to adapt it to the needs of the mass audience taking the oath of allegiance to the new authorities.

The Author tries to show how ethnic can intersect with the world of alternative artistic and intellectual culture and what the consequences of such a phenomenon for the transformation of the ethnic neighborhood and its status among the diaspora can be. The analysis is embedded in the historical and humanist perspective, accentuating the “longue durée” process, emphasizing the importance of the area and the social relations going on there for their users. Such an approach allows to form a final question on the possibility of conceptualizing this particular ethnic neighborhood in terms of cultural heritage of the immigrant group.

Non-destructive testing methods are widely applied for metal artefacts research. The analyses presented here are part of research and conservation program encompassing metal artefacts discovered during archaeological excavations in the years 2010–2011 in the area of Czermno. Among metal artefacts of archaeological origin there is an important group of objects connected with cult. Reliquary crosses called encolpions can be distinguished here; worn both by priests and by lay people in Central and Eastern Europe. They present an interesting group for historical and iconographic research, as well as for the analyses of the materials and the techniques applied. The type of cast encolpions were examined, found in the area of the old dwelling complex connected with fortified settlement of Czermno (the old Grody Czerwieńskie). These objects are initially dated to the 12th century. These metal artefacts are researched, by application of the non-destructive testing methods, at the Faculty of Foundry Engineering of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków in cooperation with Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Rzeszów University. The research helped to enlarge the scientific scope of knowledge on Mediaeval materials and manufacturing techniques, while the conservation efforts gave back the proper artistic value to the artefacts from Czermno and allowed for the appropriate exhibition.
