Opis:
In the history of anthropology, that is, a science whose borders have considerably shifted, the object of study has continually changed but there has been a prevailing conviction about the unusual sensitivity of its practices; however, such sensitivity has not been discussed by researchers in the context of wars, military intelligence, or other military endeavors. When the history of this discipline is recounted as it is by Michał Kowalski in the book Antropolodzy na wojnie [Anthropologists on War], through the prism of the complications involved in direct activities of this type, it forces one to reflect on the ethical principles that should guide field researchers. Historical analyses of such sensitive material should also incline scholars to greater methodological awareness and avoidance of the trap of presentism.

The main contradictions, between hypotheses posed by physical anthropologists or geneticists, and the hypotheses put forward by archaeologists or historians, regarding the origin and spread of the Slavs, concerned and still concern the following: (a) the state and biological dynamics of Slavic populations (the capacity for population expansion) , (b) diversity and biological similarity of various groups living in Central Europe at the end of antiquity and in the early Middle Ages, (c) migration movements and their intensity, (d) directions of migration and their importance in the formation of Slavic “ethnos”. On the basis of the results of anthropological research, it can be concluded that: (a) both in the late antiquity period and in the early Middle Ages, the regional diversity of the populations inhabiting the Odra and Vistula basins was maintained, (b) there was a geographical gradient in the variability of morphological features of the skull from west to east of Europe, (c) populations belonging to the Germanic population and populations living in Scandinavia in the Middle Ages clearly differed in terms of morphological features of the skeleton from the population of Western Slavs inhabiting the Odra and Vistula basin. On the other hand, the emergence of a clear geographical gradient in the variability of morphological features of the skeleton, in late antiquity and in the Middle Ages, in Central Europe, allows to conclude that there were no intense migratory movements and the population exchange between late antiquity and the early Middle (d) results of the skeletal morphological features and state and biological dynamics of the population from the Roman period and the Middle Ages indicate a similar level of adaptation of these groups of people to living conditions. This result does not confirm the thesis put forward by some archaeologists and historians that the cultural system of the Slavs was characterized by poverty and a low level of material culture.

Opis:
The article considers methodological problems in the study of racist attitudes and beliefs among individuals that manifest such attitudes and beliefs and among people who experience racist behaviour. The phenomenon of racism takes different forms, but it always includes the stigmatizing traits of perceived differences in the physical appearance of a human being, leading to exclusion, discrimination and persecution. The study of racism is important because of its topicality and growing presence in various places in the world. However, the study of racism encounters serious methodological problems: firstly, related to the definition of racism, secondly, owing to the desire of respondents to be politically correct and reluctance to talk about their experiences. The situation of a researcher outsider and a researcher- insider are different, sometimes an anthropologist studying natives – both positions have advantages and disadvantages. The article concludes that the only morally transparent and efficient method for a racism researcher is the engaged study of racism.

The comparative analysis of these literary texts will present the literary creation of the oneiric worlds and their most important features in both novels. This article will emphasise two main problematic areas: the analysis of dreams from the perspective of anthropologic discourse and the analysis of dreams as an individualistic literary space created by the author. In the conducted analysis the relationship between the particular spaces of dreams and the dreaming protagonists will also be accentuated.

An inspiration for the analyses included in the article are anthropologists’ experiences in the execution of a project focused on activities which constituted an offer of direct support for migrants living in Poznań. The article includes a discussion of the specifi city of the cooperation between project executors and institutions which played a key role in both the stage of the project’s preparation and implementation. On the one hand, the text refl ects on the EU and the ‘semantic’ infl uence of EU grant programs on the perception of immigrants who are included in the category of individuals “endangered by social exclusion”. On the other hand, the article considers to the specifi city of the anthropologists’ cooperation with regional and local government institutions and their representatives. I focus on the aim of this cooperation on the dilemmas connected with the involvement in practical actions and forming local policy, and on the ways in which anthropology as a discipline might benefit from contact and cooperation with local governments.

Opis:
Engaged anthropology is analyzed in this text as part of the engaged social sciences. The author uses Michael Burawoy’s concept of public sociology and Thomas Hylland Eriksen’s concept of public anthropology to organize the anthropological field and distinguish four types of anthropology: academic; critical; applied; and public and engaged. Public anthropology is understood here as the participation of anthropologists in public debate while engaged (in the strict sense of the term) on behalf of a community under study. This introduction to Engaged Anthropology in a Time of Growing Nationalism [Antropologia zaangażowana w czasie nacjonalistycznego wzmożenia; Kultura i Społeczeństwo 2020, no. 2] presents the main issues of the volume’s papers on the theoretical and practical problems of engaged anthropology as seen from Poland.
„Antropologia zaangażowana w czasie nacjonalistycznego wzmożenia”, w którym znalazły się artykuły poświęcone teoretycznym i praktycznym problemom antropologii zaangażowanej postrzeganym z polskiej perspektywy.

The aim of the article is to look at the thoughts of one of the most prominent Polish sociologists - Florian Znaniecki - and to ask the question to what extent they may be useful for present-day social and migration studies. The hypothesis furthered is that migration literature should go beyond the seminal book on Polish peasants in America by Znaniecki and Thomas and focus more on the Polish sociologist’s early thoughts. The article emphasizes the importance of cultural anthropology and culturalism not only in migration studies but also in a broad range of social studies, including the assessment of post-communist transition.

Artykuł zmierza do realizacji dwóch celów. Pierwszym jest próba naświetlenia interdyscyplinarnej perspektywy na antropologiczne podejście do kategorii sprawstwa (zwł. A. Gella, K. Wojtyły, M. Professor Jan Strzałko – Polish physical anthropologist, longtime Editor-in-Chief of Anthropological Review, scholar and academic of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, author of numerous articles and textbooks, authority on human biology and ecology, died August 15, 2016 in Poznań. He was born January 31, 1943 in Kleck, Nowogródek Voivodeship (now part of Belarus). His family repatriated to Poland in 1945 from Strzałkowo and settled in Poznań. He studied biology and anthropology at the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences, Adam Mickiewicz University during years 1960-1965. He completed his master's degree in 1965 (and joined the faculty), a PhD in 1968, and a post-doctoral degree in 1974. The title of Professor was conferred on him in 1989 (after 7 years’ delay, due to unfavorable opinion of the communist authorities of the time). Professor Strzałko was the first Dean of the newly established Department of Biology, Adam Mickiewicz University (1984-1985) – his term of office, as well as those of the Rector and Deans of other faculties, was interrupted by the then Minister of Science and Higher Education. Between years 1984-1987 he was head of the Department of Anthropology at the Faculty of Biology, founder and head of the Department of Human Population Ecology at the Institute of Anthropology (1987-2012), and from 1990-1996 Vice-rector for Research at Adam Mickiewicz University. Since 1962 he was a member of the Polish Anthropological Society. After several years working on the editorial body of the Society’s journal – Przegląd Antropologiczny (Anthropological Review), he was appointed member of the Editorial Committee in 1973. In 1978 he became Deputy Editor, and in 1986 Editor-in-Chief of the journal – a position he held for 25 years. Professor Strzałko’s first research interests were mainly the morphology and morphogenesis of the human skeleton, including the factors affecting the variability of the skeleton. He then went on to investigate the research methodology of prehistoric populations – studying bone material obtained from excavations. The third sphere to which he devoted attention was human population ecology and the relationships between biological and cultural evolution. A fourth interest was physical attractiveness – the research being as much anthropological as psychoevolutionary – then a new field.Last, but not least, was the problem of so-called human races, racial stereotypes and xenophobia. He was editor and co-author of several books, including university textbooks “Antropologia fizyczna” (Physical anthropology) and “Antropologia” (Anthropology), for which he received the awards of the Minister of Higher Education and Technology (1981) and Minister of National Education (1990). He was also Chief Editor of the first Polish translation of the American textbook “BIOLOGY: Campbell, Reece” (2012). For his outstanding achievements in the fields of education and science, and in recognition of the importance of his work, he was awarded the Medal of Commission of National Education (1981) and Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1990). Jan Strzałko was not only an eminent and creative researcher, but also a gifted academic teacher. He was a guest lecturer in Poland, and abroad – as Visiting Professor at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria, in 1993. He supervised over 150 masters students and mentored 9 PhD students. Professor Strzałko had broad interests (from biology and statistics to literature and classical music) and enormous knowledge. He was extremely well-read and one could engage him about almost anything. He popularized the science of evolution, gave comments to the press, radio and TV, shaped and directed the scientific development of young researchers, and was a keen debater and reviewer. At the same time, he was an extremely warm and cultured man – a true gentleman of great intellect. At the end of 2011 he took ill, and yet, his death was sudden and unexpected. He passed away, leaving his wife, daughter, son and grandson. Jan, you are sorely missed.

Not always has the engaged attitude of anthropologists been associated with emancipation and anti-hegemonic activities. In the past, the scholarly authority of Polish ethnographers served to consolidate nationalist discourse even when they were critical of it. The article presents an analysis of popular texts of the two interwar ethnographers: Bożena Stelmachowska who wrote about Kashubia and Jan Stanisław Bystroń who criticized national megalomania. The common denominator of these texts is the essentializing concept of nations and ethnic groups that was well fitted to serve political purposes, as was their territorialization. Only Józef Obrębski, being ahead of his time, aptly pointed out the shortcomings of these theories. The historical lesson presented in the article can be used to foster the critical reflexivity of contemporary researchers and to deconstruct nationalist discourse.
