FEAR
SALLUST
Opis:
A close look at the mentions of fear and similar affects in Sallust's works shows that he regarded them as an important factor in politics. His attitude in this matter does not differ much from that of Thucydides; but Sallust goes even further than his predecessor and presents fear as the essence of power, both in domestic and in external relations.

ancient economy
Opis:
Research on the economy of Roman Dacia has shown the high level of its development. The main branches were gold, silver and iron mining, agriculture and husbandry, handicrafts, trade and transport. During a short time many towns came into being and became important centers for the local economy. An important part of the economic growth of the province can be ascribed to the army. The archeological evidence shows strong ties between Dacia and other Roman provinces, even very distant ones.

Opis:
Aurochs (Bos primigenius) was a unique species lasting through Pleistocene and Holocene for about two million years. The aurochs was one of the largest animals ever to inhabit Europe. The longest the species survived in the very Central Europe (presently Poland), where in spite of being taken under quite modern protection the last aged cow died in the year 1627. The most often brought up reason for dying out of the Aurochs is hunting and pouching. Another belief is, that growing agriculture pushed them away further from human sites. The study of the ancient DNA is quite a challenge. Although more and more research centers undertake the task, there is still little knowledge on this matter. First step of analysis is finding of certified aurochs bones or teeth and isolation of DNA. That was the most important step, followed by cloning of aurochs DNA in bacterial system for further analysis encompassing DNA sequencing and comparison with the existing bovine database in search for any similarities and specific genes. Some of the results have been already published. Studies of aurochs help also understanding history of species, its relation to other species and perhaps will help preventing extinction of other animals.

Opis:
The article contains an analysis of the preserved fragments of Hecataeus of Abdera's work 'On the Hyperboreans' and a Polish translation of the most important ones. It seems that Hecataeus did not intend to depict an ideal of the pious and virtuous life in order to edify the reader. 'On the Hyperboreans' was not a utopia in the strict sense of the term. It was meant to be an entertaining novel describing a journey to a miraculous country. The writer probably did not imitate Pytheas of Massilia's work 'On the Ocean'. One should reject the hypothesis that Hecataeus' Hyperboreans were modeled on the Egyptians.

EGYPTIANIZING ARCHITECTURE IN KONSKIE
POLISH ARCHITECTURE
Opis:
There is an interesting yet forgotten work of Egyptianizing architecture situated on the premises of a vast park-palace complex in Konskie (a city in central Poland, between Kielce and Opoczno). It is an orangery/hothouse (54,75 x 7,25 m) that was built in the years 1825-1830 on commission for Stanislaw and Anna Malachowski, the owners of the property at that time. The creator of the building was Francesco Maria Lanci (1799-1875), a young Italian architect who had been invited to develop the palace complex. Following that commission, Lanci spent the rest of his career in Poland, where he created numerous neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance works. Using a knowledge of the basic forms of Egyptian architecture that he drew from French treatises written after Napoleon's expedition to Egypt, Lanci employed monumental pylons, statues of Memnons in niches, composite capitals, cavetto cornices, a winged sun disc and masks derived from transformed Hathor capitals. In many places he also designed pseudo-hieroglyphic inscriptions. It may be presumed that the investor demanded such Egyptian forms, since Stanislaw Malachowski (1770-1849) was strongly involved with the Freemasons after 1790. The orangery in Konskie is quite well preserved (with a style-less annex added on the northern side in 1969), but neglected, and surely demands the thoughtful care of a conservator.

'KING'S ORACLE'
ANCIENT EGYPT
ZEUS AMMON IN SIWA OASIS
Opis:
The oracle procedure employed in the sacral complex of Zeus Ammon in Siwa oasis apparently did not differ from that of the standard Egyptian barque procession. This procession, taking place during the god's symbolic journey from Aghurmi to the Umm Ubayda temple, during which questions were asked and answers received, was open to all pilgrims. Archaeological finds, as well as literary tradition concerning Alexander the Great's visit, suggest the possibility of private consultation: viz., a 'king's oracle' following a different, unknown ritual.

The research aimed to make an inventory of the vascular flora of 11 parks and gardens of the Pomeranian Cistercian Trail, with particular emphasis on taxa attached to old deciduous forests. A total of 62 species were registered, recognised as indicators of old deciduous forests in Poland. The presence of species of this group was confirmed in all of the analysed objects, but their number varied from 7 to 50. The group of ancient woodland species includes forest species for which the light indicator values are lower than or equal to 4 (plants of shadowy places, with a relative light intensity). The group of indicator species also includes forest geophytes and forest myrmecochores, autochores and barochores, as well as woodland species that can tolerate stress, under the classification of ecological strategy types S, S/CSR, S/SC and S/SR.

Opis:
The aim of the present article is to assess the possibility of treating Tolkien’s novel as an epic, that is a narrative that may be thought of as belonging to the tradition of great Mediterranean and ancient epic narrative poems, especially those that are focused on the archetype of the heroic quest. The article is not so much concerned with comparing individual motifs in those poems with their counterparts in The Lord of the Rings, but rather with comparing and contrasting the basic and archetypal narrative structures, therefore the author of the present article has chosen, in particular, three ancient epics, i.e. Homer’s Odyssey, Vergil’s Aeneid, and Statius’s Thebaid, as they seem to stand for three basic models of fashioning the epic narrative. The author concludes that Tolkien’s work shares some features with all the three models, even though the affinities with Homer’s Odyssey and the type of epic it represents appear predominant. The article contains also a discussion of the thesis that The Lord of the Rings is a romance rather than an epic.

The author discusses the problem concerning modernisation of the historical, based on intonation, rhetorical punctuation system distinguished for ancient Polish texts (up to 18-th century) but hardly comprehensible nowadays. She presents the features of the system and rules of its application, quoting examples derived from printed literary masterpieces of three best known 16-th century Polish poets: Mikołaj Rej, Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński. Being convinced of inevitability of replacing old punctuation system by modern one (logical-syntactic) she also perceives necessity of description of the historical one.

Opis:
The archaeological site Tell el-Retaba in north-eastern Egypt, about 35 km to the west of Ismailia city, is located in the middle of Wadi Tumilat, a shallow valley running from the Nile Delta to the Bitter Lakes, along which flows the Suez Canal. In ancient times the valley was a route between Egypt and Syro-Palestine, strongly fortified in the New Kingdom times (16th–11th century BC). Mud bricks were analyzed from two parts of the Wall 1 (core of grey-brown bricks and inner extension of green bricks) in a fortress which existed during the Ramesses II times. Grain-size composition of the studied bricks was almost identical in both parts of the wall, suggesting the same source material for a production of brick. However, significant differences were observed in physical and mechanical properties (uni-axial compressive strength) in both types of bricks. Bricks from the core had lower bulk density, higher porosity and soak faster, whereas their resistance parameters were much lower than those of the bricks from the inner extension. The reason for such large differences in brick properties was a technology of their production, particularly proportion of components, water volume added during brick formation or density degree. Brick preparation and in consequence, physical-mechanical properties had direct influence on preservation of defensive structures during environmental changes related to changes of groundwater and surface water levels or of precipitation. Ancient Egyptians responsible for construction works in mud brick structures of the fortress must have had good knowledge and experience. This could be observed particularly for the heaviest and most important construction element that is the defensive wall, founded on well-densified deposits. It was also testified by higher resistance of green bricks from the inner extensions, which probably originated slightly later and were intended to reinforce a weaker core built of grey-brown bricks.
