Opis:
The article examines the rise of the postmodern Holocaust narrative in Polish literature taking as a case in point Leopold Buczkowski’s novel Pierwsza świetność (First Glory), published 1966, in the context of the musings of Edmond Jabés and the testimonial writings of Halina Birenbaum. In this study the postmodernization of the Holocaust is treated as an alternative to the traditional genre of the Holocaust testimonial. Contrary to the broadly-held view that the postmodern Holocaust narrative is a fairly recent phenomenon, the article claims that it made its appearance some time after the war, in the mid-1960s. Its emergence can be seen as an attempt to voice the aporias and doubts that resulted from the pressure to draw a line on the wartime experiences and move on. Many writers, including Leopold Buczkowski, were convinced that it was necessary to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust by encrusting the historic record with other plots, problems and metaphors. This article is the fi rst in a series of studies of this problem in the 1970s and the following decades of the 20th and the 21st century.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to assess a social impact of the book “Golden Harvest”, published at the beginning of 2011 by Jan Tomasz Gross and Irena Grudzińska-Gross. The authors of the book have revealed facts, scale and motives of participation of the Polish citizens in killing and robbing Jews in the Nazi-occupied Poland. They have demonstrated that the scale of Jewish homicide was broader than hitherto described, and argued that it was greater than the scope of help provided to the Jews. The book triggered a fiery public debate in Poland. Based on the research polls the Author of the article demonstrates that the impact of “Golden Harvest” is quite complex. The book and the debate did activate the social memory concerning violence, burglary and killings of the Jews. Supposedly, they also persuaded some scarce number of Poles that such facts, quite numerous, did happen and made a significant number of Poles think that it might have been so. The discussion did not, however, change an overall and valuating opinion about the attitude of Poles towards Holocaust. The Author tries to explain why the book’s effect was far less spectacular than its authors had expected. The answer is looked for in the attitudes of Poles and the type of beliefs that were to have been changed as a result of publishing “Golden Harvest”, as well as in the specific features of the book and the debate triggered by it.

Opis:
This text contains an analysis of the experience of chaos, disorder, and family suffering among the inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto during the Second World War, based on materials of a biographical nature, that is, personal documents. The author refers to the concept of a trajectory, which makes it possible to grasp the breakdown of adaptation strategies in the face of an extreme situation. She analyzes the processes of family disintegration and degradation in the Ghetto and proposes a new analytical category—the “family trajectory.”

Opis:
The author considers selected photography of the amateur photographer Feliks Łukowski, from the period of the Second World War. The photos were taken in Łukowski’s native village and in nearby localities during the German occupation. They are presented with the results of field research conducted in July 2015 in the Zamojść area in order to show how what is remembered by witnesses departs from what was captured in the photos. The author attempts to explain the source of that divergence and also to show how useful a sociological analysis of photography can be in determining the meanings produced by the images it preserves. The aim of these reflections is to emphasize the characteristic traits and functioning of peasant memory.

Opis:
In the article, I discuss Mieke Bal's concept of a preposterous interpretation of works of art, which reverses the way that the history of art perceives the reciprocal influence of images. According to Bal, an inalienable intertextual aspect of an artwork's interpretation is that earlier images can influence those that come later and, in a seemingly ahistorical order, those that come later can influence earlier images, changing their meaning. Bal sees this, standard in art history, rejection of the influence as one‑way, as an opportunity for a more historically responsible interpretation. It also gives the researcher of the past a chance to gain self‑awareness of their position in the present and factors influencing the way of seeing the past. I use Bal's preposterous reading to analyse three cards from official propaganda albums commissioned by the Łódź Judenrat and made by Jewish artists working in the ghetto. I show how analysis that is aware of preposterousness allows a researcher to see the influence of post‑war Holocaust representations on the interpretation of documents from the Shoah and how it enables researchers to understand the albums from the Łódź Ghetto as a prefiguration of the fate of the victims.

Opis:
The Author examines the presentation of the German occupation at the Warsaw Rising Museum and in Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory in Krakow. Initially, she studies the space of these exhibitions and demonstrates that the Warsaw Rising Museum has some characteristics of reflective space, while the exhibition at the Schindler’s Factory is primarily a projective one. Then, she points out that both museums treat artefacts as illustrations of their stories, as a consequence of which they are simulations of the past rather than material testimonies of what had happened. Finally, the Author argues that the Warsaw Rising Museum primarily tells the story of glory of the Polish nation, while the Schindler Factory focuses on the social history. In conclusion the Author points out that none of the exhibitions breaks the existing taboos or offers a new approach to the past. Both museum stories perfectly reflect the shape of the Polish social memory of World War II. Differences in the way they present the past are a result of rooting each of the stories in different public debates that were conducted in Poland after 1989.

Opis:
This article concerns the archival enterprise at the Grodzka Gate-NN Theater Center in Lublin [Ośrodek „Brama Grodzka - Teatr NN”; http://teatrnn.pl] and those aspects of its operation that are connected with the artistic processing of the idea of an archive as a “memory ark.” The author discusses key elements of the archive’s form and function in connection with the Center’s social and educational activities, showing their relation to questions of cultural memory, memory as responsibility, the social dimension of memory, and ethical and artistic aspects of remembering (especially the remembrance and non-remembrance of victims of the Shoah). The article also reviews those works of the Center in which the form and function of the archive are translated into various realizations of “memory theater” (including “behind-the-scenes theater” inspired by the form of the archive, mysteries of memory, the expanded digital archive and its network infrastructure oriented on “memory work”, etc.)
