Opis:
Current power grid and market development, characterized by large growth of distributed energy sources in recent years, especially in Europa, are according energy storage systems an increasingly larger field of implementation. Existing storage technologies, e.g. pumped-storage power plants, have to be upgraded and extended by new but not yet commercially viable technologies (e.g. batteries or adiabatic compressed air energy storage) that meet expected demands. Optimal sizing of storage systems and technically and economically optimal operating strategies are the major challenges to the integration of such systems in the future smart grid. This paper surveys firstly the literature on the latest niche applications. Then, potential new use case and operating scenarios for energy storage systems in smart grids, which have been field tested, are presented and discussed and subsequently assessed technically and economically.

This paper discusses benefits of introducing an ultracapacitor (UC) bank into a battery electric vehicle (BEV) powertrain. The case of 12kWh LiFePO4 battery pack is studied quantitatively. Simulation results refer, inter alia, to three main scenarios: fresh cells, half-used battery cells, and half-used ultracapacitors and batteries. Thermal modeling is incorporated into the simulation. Data from real world are considered: various driving cycles recorded using GPS receiver (incl. elevation), discharge curves from battery manufacturer, and UC equivalent series resistance (ESR) variations due to cycling according to real data reported in papers. Cost, as well as gravimetric and volumetric issues are presented. The key decisions referring to an energy storage for BEV being currently designed within the frame of ECO-Mobility Project are highlighted.

The article shows the proposed solution of the objective function for the seasonal thermal energy storage system. In order to develop this function the technological and economic assumptions were used. In order to select the optimal system configuration mathematical models of the main elements of the system were built. Using these models, and based on the selected design point, the simulation of the entire system for randomly generated outside temperatures was made. The proposed methodology and obtained relationships can be readily used for control purposes, constituting model predicted control (MPC).

Opis:
The energy sector is a majorarea that is responsible for the country development. Almost 40% of the total energy requirement of an EU country is consumed by the building sector and 60% of which is only used for heating and cooling requirements. This is a prime concern as fossil fuel stocks are depleting and global warming is rising. This is where thermal energy storage can play a major role and reduce the dependence on the use of fossil fuels for energy requirements (heating and cooling) of the building sector. Thermal energy storage refers to the technology which is related to the transfer and storage of heat energy predominantly from solar radiation, alternatively to the transfer and storage of cold from the environment to maintain a comfortable temperature for the inhabitants in the buildings by providing cold in the summer and heat in the winter. This work is an extensive study on the use of thermal energy storage in buildings. It discusses different methods of implementing thermal energy storage into buildings, specifically the use of phase change materials, and also highlights the challenges and opportunities related to implementing this technology. Moreover, this work explains the principles of different types and methods involved in thermal energy storage.

Due to the very intensive development of renewable energy sources, producing electricity in irregular and unpredictable way, storage plays an increasingly important role in the current energy system. Currently used systems for storing electricity on a large scale include only pumped storage and compressed air energy storage. The paper presents energy analysis of three underwater energy storage systems based on compressed air without recuperation, and with recuperation and adiabatic. Balance calculations for selected configuration of the system was performed. The efficiency of storage of electricity was calculated using four different definitions.

Usage of phase change materials is one of the most important topics in the whole area of energy storage. Series of tests have been done, during which both, the casing and the cover have been insulated, thereby thermal losses have been limited. Furthermore, paper presents an influence of insulation on the heat storage possibility in the proposed accumulative heat exchanger.

Opis:
This paper proposes four different cost-effective configurations of a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) in an electric city bus. A comparison is presented between a battery powered bus (battery bus) and supercapacitor powered bus in two configurations in terms of initial and operational costs. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery type was used in the battery bus and three of the hybrids. In the first hybrid the battery module was the same size as in the battery bus, in the second it was half the size and in the third it was one third the size. The fourth hybrid used a lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) battery type with the same energy as the LFP battery module in the battery bus. The model of LFP battery degradation is used in the calculation of its lifetime range and operational costs. For the NMC battery and supercapacitor, the manufacturers’ data have been adopted. The results show that it is profitable to use HESS in an electric city bus from both the producer and consumer point of view. The reduction of battery size and added supercapacitor module generates up to a 36% reduction of the initial energy storage system (ESS) price and up to a 29% reduction of operational costs when compared to the battery ESS. By using an NMC battery type in HESS, it is possible to reduce operational costs by up to 50% compared to an LFP battery ESS.

The possibility of using CO2 to fracturing a shale rock has been presented in the paper. The described innovative method which allows for the efficient extraction of shale gas and carbon dioxide storage in a shale rock was developed in Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science at the Military University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland. Firstly, the method was verified on the base of analytical and experimental research. In the next stage of the method verification carbon dioxide thermodynamic behavior was studied. The growth in pressure of drop of CO2 heated in a closed volume was numerically tested. The research confirmed the efficiency of the use of carbon dioxide as a medium for fracturing of rocks. The usage of liquid CO2 can be alternative for hydraulic fracturing and is safe for the environment.

A problem of optimization for production and storge costs is studied. The problem consists in manufacture of n types of products, with some given restrictions, so that the total production and storage costs are minimal. The mathematical model is built using the framework of driftless control affine systems. Controllability is studied using Lie geometric methods and the optimal solution is obtained with Pontryagin Maximum Principle. It is proved that the economical system is not controllable, in the sense that we can only produce a certain quantity of products. Finally, some numerical examples are given with graphical representation.
