Opis:
The paper addresses the problem of algorithm synthesis for controlling the motion of an electric powered wheelchair. The aim of the algorithm is to stabilize the wheelchair following a linear path and avoiding obstacles if occurred on its way. The main restriction imposed on the project is the application of simple low-cost sensors. That implies the system to cope with a number of inaccuracies and uncertainties related to the measurements. The goal of this work is to evaluate the possibility of the wheelchair project with a navigation system which aids a disable person to move in a complex and dynamic areas. Exemplary simulations are presented in order to discuss the results obtained.

Opis:
Sensory processing sensitivity is a relatively new theoretical construct. Its main components include deeper processing of stimuli as well as a stronger response to environmental impacts, both positive and negative. The effect of misinformation, which involves the inclusion of misinformation in the witness's memory reports, can be modified by varied factors, including personality characteristics. To the knowledge of the authors, no such research has been conducted so far and thereby the aim of the following study was to examine the relationship between the sensory processing sensitivity and susceptibility to the misinformation effect. Group studies were carried out according to the three-stage scheme of investigating the misinformation effect. After the original material was presented, the participants were exposed to a post-event material, containing the misinformation in the experimental group. Then the memory of the original material was tested. A strong misinformation effect was shown. Highly sensitive people, achieving the highest results in the Highly Sensitive Person Scale, were more resistant to the misinformation effect.

Opis:
The author presents a research approach that he defines as multisensory autoethnography. He proposes that it should be used for the study of sensory experiences in everyday life, as an important aspect of micropractices. The article is composed of three parts. In the first, the research context is described in reference to the tradition of the sociology of everyday life. The second part discussed the theoretical and methodological approaches that are the basis for autoethnography in general. The third part contains a description of the method proposed by the author. The three assumptions of the method are (1) the personal experience of the researcher, (2) interpersonal communication abilities, and (3) the attempt to grasp the fullest picture of the practices and sensory experiences of the researcher and the persons studied.

Opis:
The article presents two studies based on the assumption that the effectiveness of cognitive control depends on the subject’s type of emotional state. Inhibitory control is taken into account, as the basic determinant of the antisaccade reactions and the emotional Stroop effect. The studies deal with differentiation of emotions on the basis of their origin: automatic (due to primary affective reactions) vs. refl ective (due to deliberative evaluation). According to the main assumption, automatic emotions are diffusive, and decrease the effectiveness of cognitive control. The hypothesis predicted that performance level of both the Antisaccade Task and the Emotional Stroop Test would be lower in the automaticemotion eliciting condition than in the refl ective-emotion eliciting condition. In two experimental studies, positive and negative (automatic vs. refl ective) emotions were elicited. The results support the predictions, regardless of the valence of emotions.

Opis:
Although resiniferatoxin (RTX) becomes more often used in experimental therapies of sensory system disorders, so far there is no data concerning the influence of RTX on the chemical coding of neurons in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) supplying the urinary bladder in the pig, an animal species considered as a reliable animal model for investigation dealing with human lower urinary tract disorders. Retrograde tracer Fast Blue (FB) was injected into the wall of the right half of the urinary bladder in six juvenile female pigs, and three weeks later, bladder instillation of RTX (500 nmol per animal) was carried out in all the animals. After a week, DRGs were harvested from all the pigs and the neurochemical characterization of FB+ neurons was performed using routine single-immunofluorescence labeling technique on 10-μm-thick cryostat sections. RTX instillation resulted in a distinct decrease in the numbers of FB+ cells containing calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), nitric oxide synthase (NOS), somatostatin (SOM) and calbindin (CB) when compared with those found in the healthy animals (18% vs. 36%, 1% vs. 6%, 0.8% vs. 4% and 0.5% vs. 3%, respectively), and an increase in the number of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP)- and galanin (GAL)-immunoreactive (IR) nerve cells (51% vs. 26% and 47% vs. 6.5%). The results obtained suggest that RTX could be taken into consideration when the neuroactive agents are planned to be used in experimental therapies of selected neurogenic bladder illnesses.

Opis:
Conantokin G (CTG), isolated from the venom of the marine cone snail Conus geographus, is an antagonist of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), the activation of which, especially those located on the central afferent terminals and dorsal horn neurons, leads to hypersensitivity and pain. Thus, CTG blocking of NMDARs, has an antinociceptive effect, particularly in the case of neurogenic pain treatment. As many urinary bladder disorders are caused by hyperactivity of sensory bladder innervation, it seems useful to estimate the influence of CTG on the plasticity of sensory neurons supplying the organ. Retrograde tracer Fast Blue (FB) was injected into the urinary bladder wall of six juvenile female pigs. Three weeks later, intramural bladder injections of CTG (120 μg per animal) were carried out in all animals. After a week, dorsal root ganglia of interest were harvested from all animals and neurochemical characterization of FB+ neurons was performed using a routine double-immunofluorescence labeling technique on 10-μm-thick cryostat sections. CTG injections led to a significant decrease in the number of FB+ neurons containing substance P (SP), pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), somatostatin (SOM), calbindin (CB) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) when compared with healthy animals (20% vs. 45%, 13% vs. 26%, 1.3% vs. 3%, 1.2 vs. 4% and 0.9% vs. 6% respectively) and to an increase in the number of cells immunolabelled for galanin (GAL, 39% vs. 6.5%). These data demonstrated that CTG changed the chemical coding of bladder sensory neurons, thus indicating that CTG could eventually be used in the therapy of selected neurogenic bladder illnesses.

Opis:
The last decades have seen a growing interest in food and cooking and along with it a rise of the a new journalistic genre, the food column. This article focuses on two collections of Polish food columns, or, to be more precise culinary feuilletons, now also available in book form, Literatura od kuchni [Literature from Behind the Scenes] by Bogusław Deptuła and Więcej niż możesz zjeść [More Than You Can Tuck Away] by Dorota Masłowska. They provide the material for a study of two interrelated phenomena, the sensory processing which takes place in the course of the culinary experience, and the retrieval of those experiences from memory, triggered by exposure to certain events or artefacts. Viewed from that perspective, the culinary columns of either writer represent a record of his or her gustatory sensations, which constitute their (auto)biographical pasts. Each of them is made up of two blocks of memories, representing the remote past (childhood) and the past that is still fresh (recent travel experiences). The approach adopted in this study ties in with the methodology of sensory anthropology, especially its taste- and smell-specific subfields, and sensuous geography (most of the sensory reminiscences in Bogusław Deptuła’s and Dorota Masłowska’s culinary feuilletons are rooted in their experience of a particular geographical place).
