Opis:
The paper is focused on application of sensitivity methods to analysis of signaling pathway models. Two basic methods are compared: local, based on standard sensitivity functions, and global, based on Sobol indices. Firstly, a general outline of modeling of signaling pathways by means of ordinary differential equations is briefly described. Afterwards, the methods of sensitivity analysis, known from literature, are introduced and illustrated with a simple example of a dynamical system of the second order. Subsequently, the analysis of the p53/Mdm2 regulatory module, which is a key element of any pathway involving p53 protein, is presented. The results of this analysis suggest that no single method should be chosen for investigation of any signaling pathway model but several of them should be applied to answer important questions about sources of heterogeneity in cells behavior, robustness of signaling pathways and possible molecular drug targets.

Sensory processing sensitivity is a relatively new theoretical construct. Its main components include deeper processing of stimuli as well as a stronger response to environmental impacts, both positive and negative. The effect of misinformation, which involves the inclusion of misinformation in the witness's memory reports, can be modified by varied factors, including personality characteristics. To the knowledge of the authors, no such research has been conducted so far and thereby the aim of the following study was to examine the relationship between the sensory processing sensitivity and susceptibility to the misinformation effect. Group studies were carried out according to the three-stage scheme of investigating the misinformation effect. After the original material was presented, the participants were exposed to a post-event material, containing the misinformation in the experimental group. Then the memory of the original material was tested. A strong misinformation effect was shown. Highly sensitive people, achieving the highest results in the Highly Sensitive Person Scale, were more resistant to the misinformation effect.

The present study examined the mediating role of ego depletion sensitivity between temperaments and subjective vitality. The sample of the present research consisted of 210 undergraduate students of the University of Sargodha. Temperament, ego depletion sensitivity, and subjective vitality were operationalized through Approach-Avoidance Temperament Questionnaire (Elliot & Thrash, 2010), Depletion Sensitivity Scale (Salmon et al., 2014), and Subjective Vitality Scale (Ryan & Frederick, 1997), respectively. Correlation analysis depicted that ego depletion sensitivity was positively correlated with avoidance temperament and negatively correlated with subjective vitality. Furthermore, ego depletion sensitivity mediated between avoidance temperament and subjective vitality. Implications of the study along with its limitations and suggestions were discussed.

The paper presents the properties of a strain sensor, which was made using the micro hole collapse method and operates in the configuration of a Mach-Zehnder modal interferometer with a PM-1550-01 polarization maintaining photonic crystal fibre. The sensor’s transfer curve was determined analytically. Its strain sensitivity, determined from measurements, decreases slightly with increasing wavelength and is in a range from -2.01 to -2.23 pm/με in the wavelength range 1520-1580 nm. Based on the Fourier analysis of the wavelength spectrum of the constructed sensor, the difference of the group refractive indices of the core and the cladding of the photonic crystal fibre was determined, which are in a range from 7.45·10-3 to 1.01·10-2. The temperature sensitivity of the sensor, determined on the basis of measurements performed in a range from 23 to 60°C, is positive and equals 5.9 pm/K.

These instructions give you guidelines for preparing papers for IFAC conferences. A reverse supply chain is configured by a sequence of elements forming a continuous process to treat return-products until they are properly recovered or disposed. The activities in a reverse supply chain include collection, cleaning, disassembly, test and sorting, storage, transport, and recovery operations. This paper presents a mathematical programming model with the objective of minimizing the total costs of reverse supply chain including transportation, fixed opening, operation, maintenance and remanufacturing costs of centers. The proposed model considers the design of a multi-layer, multi-product reverse supply chain that consists of returning, disassembly, processing, recycling, remanufacturing, materials and distribution centers. This integer linear programming model is solved by using Lingo 9 software and the results are reported. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of the proposed model is also presented.

A device with a frequency-modulated output signal has been developed to increase the sensitivity and accuracy of measuring moisture content in crude oil and petroleum products in the range of 0~20%. The main element of the device is a self-oscillator transducer based on a transistor structure with negative differential resistance. A capacitive sensor in the form of a capacitive cylindrical structure with cylindrical electrodes was used to determine moisture content in crude oil and petroleum products. Electric permittivity of a two-component mixture of oil and water was estimated and the capacitance of the humidity-sensitive capacitive cylindrical structure with cylindrical electrodes was calculated. An electrical diagram of the device for measuring and controlling the humidity of crude oil and petroleum products has been developed. The relative error of converting the humidity of oil and petroleum products into capacitance which was caused by the change in oil temperature, was determined to be 0.225%. Values of relative errors of the device for measuring the humidity of oil and petroleum products are as follows: 1.355 · 10-5% is caused by instability of the oscillator frequency, 0.01% is caused by fluctuations in the supply voltage of the self-oscillator transducer, 0.05% is caused by a change in ambient temperature by 1°C. For the developed device, which used errors of the first and second type, the reliability of humidity control of oil and petroleum products has been determined to be 0.9591.

Opis:
The paper is focused on sensitivity analysis of large-scale models of biological systems that describe dynamics of the so called signaling pathways. These systems are continuous in time but their models are based on discrete-time measurements. Therefore, if sensitivity analysis is used as a tool supporting model development and evaluation of its quality, it should take this fact into account. Such models are usually very complex and include many parameters difficult to estimate in an experimental way. Changes of many of those parameters have little effect on model dynamics, and therefore they are called sloppy. In contrast, other parameters, when changed, lead to substantial changes in model responses and these are called stiff parameters. While this is a well-known fact, and there are methods to discern sloppy parameters from the stiff ones, they have not been utilized, so far, to create parameter rankings and quantify the influence of single parameter changes on system time responses. These single parameter changes are particularly important in analysis of signalling pathways, because they may pinpoint parameters, associated with the processes to be targeted at the molecular level in laboratory experiments. In the paper we present a new, original method of creating parameter rankings, based on an Hessian of a cost function which describes the fit of the model to a discrete experimental data. Its application is explained with simple dynamical systems, representing two typical dynamics exhibited by the signaling pathways.

Opis:
This paper studies the assessment of sensitivity to land degradation of Deliblato sands (the northern part of Serbia), as a special nature reserve. Sandy soils of Deliblato sands are highly sensitive to degradation (given their fragility), while the system of land use is regulated according to the law, consisting of three zones under protection. Based on the MEDALUS approach and the characteristics of the study area, four main factors were considered for evaluation: soil, climate, vegetation and management. Several indicators affecting the quality of each factor were identified. Each indicator was quantified according to its quality and given a weighting of between 1.0 and 2.0. ArcGIS 9 was utilized to analyze and prepare the layers of quality maps, using the geometric mean to integrate the individual indicator map. In turn, the geometric mean of all four quality indices was used to generate sensitivity of land degradation status map. Results showed that 56.26% of the area is classified as critical; 43.18% as fragile; 0.55% as potentially affected and 0.01% as not affected by degradation. The values of vegetation quality index, expressed as coverage, diversity of vegetation functions and management policy during the protection regime are clearly represented through correlation coefficient (0.87 and 0.47).

Opis:
The paper addresses the problems of the sensitivity analysis and optimal design of multi-span sandwich panels with a soft core and flat thin steel facings. The response functional is formulated in a general form allowing wide practical applications. Sensitivity gradients of this functional with respect to dimensional, material and support parameters are derived using adjoint variable method. These operators account for the jump of the slope of a Timoshenko beam or a Reissner plate at the position of concentrated active load or reaction, thus extending the sensitivity operators known in literature. The jump of slope is the effect of shear deformation of the core. Special attention is focussed on sensitivity and optimisation allowing for variable support position and stiffness, because local phenomena observed in supporting area of sandwich plates often initiate failure mechanisms. Introducing optimally located elastic supports allows to reduce the unfavourable influence of temperature on the state of stress. Several examples illustrate the application of derived sensitivity operators and demonstrate their exactness.

The paper presents definitions and relative measures of the system sensitivity and sensitivity of its errors. The model of a real system and model of an ideal measuring system were introduced. It allows to determine the errors of the system. The paper presents also how to use the error sensitivity analysis carried out on the models of the measuring system to the correction of the nonlinearity error of its static characteristic. The corrective function is determined as a relation between the input variable of the tested system and its chosen parameter. The use of the proposed method has been presented on the example of a phase angle modulator. The obtained results have been compared with the results of analytic calculations. The idea of a phase angle modulator is also presented.

Evolutionary solid bodies undergoing changes of mass, of properties, and of shapes are considered in models of growth and adaptation and similarily in structural optimisation. A fundamental separation of different growth phenomena and a subsequent parametrisation using independent design variables for the amount of substance as well as for molar mass and molar volume facilitates an efficient formulation of the design space. Thus, the effects of design variations, i.e. change of amount of substance, on the variations of the structural response, i.e. the deformation in physical space, can be clearly described. Overall, a novel treatment of growth processes based on an evolution of the amount of substance is outlined. The parallelism of variations in physical and design space are highlighted and compared with the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into a growth and an elastic part incorporating an incompatible intermediate configuration. This drawback is overcome by a compatible manifold based on material points modelling the amount of substance outside of any geometrical space.

The first-order sensitivities of an arbitrary thermal and mechanical behavioral functional with respect to shape and material properties of the interface are derived using the direct or adjoint approaches. Acoustic barriers are assigned to the respective categories of sound absorbing properties on the basis of a single-number sound absorption evaluation index. Categories of absorbing properties play a significant role in selecting the barrier type for the given localisation. The estimation of the single-number sound absorption evaluation index is performed, among others, by means of measuring the sound absorption coefficient of the analysed acoustic barrier sample in the reverberation chamber. The sensitivity analysis of the determination of the single-number sound absorption evaluation index was performed in this work. The estimation of the input parameters uncertainty contribution to the expanded uncertainty of the sound absorption evaluation index, was done first. The Monte Carlo method and the reduction interval arithmetic were used for this aim. The relative sensitivity coefficients were determined by means of the author’s method based on the interval arithmetic. These coefficients contain information concerning the quantitative influence of the given input value on the final result.
