    Opis:
    This article looks on Jedwabne and the debate on Polish involvement in the Holocaust from the perspective of the Jedwabians. The author shows that until the erection of the national monument to the murdered Jews in Jedwabne in 2001, the Jedwabians’ memory of their Jewish neighbours was a part of local memory. Jedwabians commemorated the Jews in accordance with their frames of memory. The point is that the people in Jedwabne are first of all a members of parish community, so their memory is religious in nature. This has a profound effect on their relationship to the past and their perception of the role of monuments and memorials. By reconstructing the history of the erection of selected monuments in Jedwabne, the author shows which events of the past Jedwabians want to commemorate and what social function is played by memory of the commemorated events. She also considers to what degree memory of the group’s past lies at the base of the Jedwabians’ contemporary identity.

    Artykuł ukazuje znaczenie pamiętników Rufina Piotrowskiego w budowaniu emigracyjnej świadomości II poł. XIX w. na temat prześladowań i zsyłek Polaków na Sybir. Na podstawie relacji prasowych oraz kolejnych wydań pamiętników próbowano odtworzyć atmosferę zainteresowania, podniecenia, a nawet skandalu politycznego, do jakiego przyczynił się ich autor, publikując swoje wspomnienia. Z drugiej strony przeanalizowana została rola informacyjno-edukacyjna wspomnień, a samego autora próbowano przedstawić jako nauczyciela nie tylko wychodźczej młodzieży, ale w pewnym sensie – całej Wielkiej Emigracji. Ukazano znaczenie jego pamiętników w tworzeniu polskiej świadomości narodowej i budowaniu postaw patriotycznych w drugim pokoleniu emigrantów – uczniów szkoły polskiej w Paryżu, w większości urodzonych we Francji. Ich autor, wieloletni profesor słynnej Szkoły Batignolskiej był jednym z największych autorytetów dla uczących się tam uczniów. Jego wspomnienia wywierały na nich wyjątkowy wpływ: począwszy od budowania mesjanistycznego obrazu zniewolonej Polski, aż do podejmowania ostatecznych decyzji o walce z bronią w ręku za jej wolność.
    The article presents the importance of the memories of Rufin Piotrowski, a Polish immigrant after the insurrection of November 1830 who escaped from Siberia in 1846, in the process of building an emigrant’s consciousness about Siberian reality. Based on the written accounts (in the form of articles) and the successively edited French and Polishmemoirs of R. Piotrowski, the article tries to recreate the climate of interest, excitation, and even the political rumours surrounding the affairs occurring in the second part of nineteenth century. The article also analyses the educational and informational role of souvenirs from Siberia in the process of building the Polish national identity among the second generation of immigrants. For them Piotrowski was regarded as a heroic teacher who deserved followers. He not only had great influence over immigrant youth, but he was also an authority for the whole Polish emigration. The impact that the articles and books written by Piotrowski have had on the formation of the Polish identity and patriotism have been so far underestimated.

    Opis:
    This paper aims to investigate, on the one hand, how the concept of 19th‑century Siberia was constructed by three Polish political prisoners in their private documents. On the other hand, the significance of the “Siberian triangle” (consisting of essential ideas of “Polishness”, “Russianness”, and “Easternness”), in the construction of Polish exiles' identity. Siberia never existed, or did it? Apart from the vast territories named Siberia, there was also the abstract category of Siberia, consisting of parameters and charts, plans and maps, sustaining the development projects, and images, stories, and texts, in which usually imagined Siberia went beyond the geographical Siberia. Taking this into account, in this paper, I would like to look at the three‑dimensional construction of Siberia. Namely: an imperial attitude, defending its political and economic prerogatives; the interests of the indigenous peoples who gradually had been losing their rights to the pastures and whose voice was the least heard among others; as well as the view of Polish exiles, sent to the eastern territories of the Russian Empire against their will. To paraphrase Edward Said, we can state that the strategies of the conquest of Siberia directly impacted its perceptions, narrative constructions, and later reconstructions of the 19th‑century Siberian realities. Three case studies will serve me as illustrative material: Adolf Januszkiewicz, Bronisław Zaleski, and Seweryn Gross.

    Marine carbonates and siliciclastic rocks of the Burj Formation in Jordan include paucispecific trilobite associations of the (traditional) Lower. Middle Cambrian boundary interval. Comprehensive new material of these trilobites allows a review of their taxonomy and systematic positions as well as a refined morphological description and a reconsideration of previous interpretations of their stratigraphic position and thus the correlation of the fossiliferous beds. In addition to the classic species Kingaspis campbelli (King, 1923) and Redlichops blanckenhorni Richter and Richter, 1941, Timnaella? orientalis (Picard, 1942) and Hesa problematica Richter and Richter, 1941, the discussed trilobites include Issalia gen. nov. with Issalia scutalis gen. nov., sp. nov., Tayanaspis gen. nov. with Tayanaspis bulbosus gen. nov., sp. nov., Uhaymiria gen. nov. with Uhaymiria glabra gen. nov., sp. nov., Cambrunicornia? jafnaensis sp. nov., Myopsolenites palmeri (Parnes, 1971), M. hyperion sp. nov., and Enixus cf. antiquus (Chernysheva, 1956). Myopsolenites boutiouiti Geyer and Landing, 2004 is now regarded as a junior synonym of Myopsolenites altus (Lian and Gozalo, 1986). A detailed discussion of the correlation with a focus on global aspects provides clues for the utility of potential index fossils for the global Cambrian Series 3 and Stage 5.
