Opis:
The paper deals with cooperation between pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier and variable speed synchronous generator which is applied especially in small water or wind plants. In such applications, the synchronous generator, which is usually permanent magnet (PM) generator, rotates at a variable speed which depends on water or wind energy. Therefore, this energy should be converted to the parameters of the three-phase power grid with the use of a power electronic unit. The main aim of the control strategy is to transfer a maximum possible amount of energy produced by the water turbine or the wind turbine connected to a synchronous generator. The second purpose of the control method is to decrease the amount of higher harmonics of generator currents. The paper describes two basic methods which are used in control systems of the PWM rectifiers. The first one is the sinusoidal PWM method, and the second method relates to the hysteresis switching of the PWM rectifier transistors. A significant part of the paper is devoted to control principles of the PWM rectifier which cooperates with a variable speed PM synchronous generator. Special attention is paid to higher harmonics of PM generator currents with respect to individual methods.

Opis:
The Small Hydro Power Plants allow to increase the energy amount from renewable sources, especially from small rivers in mountainous areas. This paper presents a new concept of a energy conversion system for application in a Small Hydropower Plant (SHP) which is based on a permanent magnet generator (PM generator) with a propeller turbine integrated with the generator rotor. The PM generator can work at a variable speed and therefore energy produced by the PM generator has to be converted by means of a power electronic unit to fit to the three-phase power grid parameters. For this concept, dimensions and parameters of the PM generator were specially designed on account of integration with water turbine. The paper precisely describes elements of energy conversion system and also presents the results of numerical tests for chosen working conditions. An original algorithm of control strategy for power electronic unit was used to adjust generated energy to the required parameters of the three-phase grid.

One of the most important drawbacks of the three phases five-level NPC (Neutral Point Clamped) Active Power Filter (APF) is the neutral point balance. As the consequence, the capacitors voltages of the input DC bus of the APF are not equal which constitutes the major limitation for the use of this power converter. In order to stabilize these DC voltages, it is proposed in this paper to study the cascade constituted by three phases three-level PWM rectifier-clamping bridge filter-five-level NPC APF. In the first part, the authors present a topology of five-level NPC Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), and then, they propose a model of this converter and its PWM control strategy. In the second part, the modeling and control of three-level PWM current rectifier is presented. In the third part, to remedy to instability problem of the input capacitors DC voltages of the APF, the authors propose feedback control of the three-level PWM rectifier followed by clamping bridge filter. After that, the sliding mode regulator used to control the active filter is developed. The obtained results are full of promise to use this topology of APF in high voltage and high power applications.

The paper presents a concept of a control system for a high-frequency three-phase PWM grid-tied converter (3x400 V / 50 Hz) that performs functions of a 10-kW DC power supply with voltage range of 600÷800 V and of a reactive power compensator. Simulation tests (in PLECS) allowed proper selection of semiconductor switches between fast IGBTs and silicon carbide MOSFETs. As the main criterion minimum amount of power losses in semiconductor devices was adopted. Switching frequency of at least 40 kHz was used with the aim of minimizing size of passive filters (chokes, capacitors) both on the AC side and on the DC side. Simulation results have been confirmed in experimental studies of the PWM converter, the power factor of which (inductive and capacitive) could be regulated in range from 0.7 to 1.0 with THDi of line currents below 5% and energy efficiency of approximately 98.5%. The control system was implemented in Texas Instruments TMS320F28377S microcontroller.

Voltage source multilevel inverters have become very attractive for power industries in power electronics applications during last years. The main purposes of studying multilevel inverters are the generation of output voltage signals with low harmonic distortion and reduction of switching frequency. An important issue of the multilevel inverter is the capacitor voltage-balancing problem. The unbalance of different DC voltage sources of multilevel neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source inverter (VSI) constitutes the major limitation for the use of this new power converter. In this paper, we present study on the stability problem of the input DC voltages of the three-level Neutral Point Clamping (NPC) voltage source inverter (VSI). This inverter is useful for application in high voltage and high power area. In the first part, we remind the model of double stator induction motors (DSIM). Then, we develop control models of this inverter using the connection functions of the semi-conductors. We propose a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategy to control this converter. The inverter is fed by constant input DC voltages. In the last part, we study the stability problem of the input DC voltages of the inverter. A cascade constituted by two three-level PWM rectifiers - two three-level NPC VSI - DSIM is discussed. The results obtained show that the input DC voltages of the inverters are not stable. To solve this problem, we propose to use a half clamping bridge. This solution is very promising in order to stabilize the input DC voltages of this converters.

In the paper the 3-phase power diode rectifier system with quasi-sinusoidal input (power grid) current is presented. In order to benefit from it, the current modulation in the DC circuit of a rectifier is used. The essential part of the current modulator is the wide-band power electronics controlled current source based on a multi-channel converter. The control algorithm of the current modulator respects impact of aliasing phenomena at system stability by using the method proposed by the authors. The paper includes the rectifier system description and rules of operation of the current modulator. Also, some results of research on both the rectifier simulation model and the laboratory prototype of a current modulator are presented.
