    The research task of the essay is to answer the question of what is the face of the nation in the ethnic enclaves situated at the peripheries of national states. The subject of the analyses is the local population of the village Jaworzynka. In 1922, the settlement Herczawa was founded as a local unit independent from Jaworzynka. Since then Herczawa began to belong to Czechoslovakia. The state-owned status of Jaworzynka, which started to be a part of the Republic of Poland, was recognized after the World War I. The author takes into account the longue durre of folk and national culture generated in the Silesian Beskidy in the second half of the 18th century. The national culture is the main term applied to the investigations of the borderland regions. According to the ethno-symbolic approaches (Anthony D. Smith) and culturalism methods in sociology (Antonina Kłoskowska), the author analyses in his research: 1) language, 2) religion, 3) folkways and mores 4) arts, 5) local knowledge and literature. These elements delineate the sphere of symbolic culture. Based on the common folk culture, two national cultures have been formed nowadays – the Polish and Czech ones. Both Polish and Czech Census Bureau data and objective elements of national culture discussed in the essay indicate the process of national revival. The local people of Jaworzynka identify themselves as Poles and the population of Herczawa define themselves as Czechs. The content and the form of the local culture are visible in Jaworzyna, but they seem to be latent or diminishing in Herczawa.

    The article is an attempt at contemporary interpretation of Antonina Kłoskowska’s theory of culture. The Author starts with a brief summary of her concept and follows with his analysis and elaboration on a few interesting issues which are the most inter- esting in his opinion. They include: national culture and the culture of a national society (i.e. a society, the members of which regard themselves also as members of a national community, an essence of integrative functions of national culture and conciliative functions of artistic heritage.

    All European societies have massively intermixed in the course of history. Migrations and wars were not unusual. The stability of the ethnic composition of specific groups is thus a myth. Nationalistic ideologies which present their countries as nation-states most often do not take into consideration the numerous “admixtures” which have come into existence due to migration. Similarly, the idea of cultural “purity” has no sense. Also the idea of an eternal national territory is senseless more often than not. There are nations with the predominance of emigration processes and there are nations with the predominance of immigration processes. There are also nations in diaspora and nations which are entirely composed of immigrants who recently arrived in a given place. The phenomenon of migration has great influence on the characteristics of the nation which it concerns, on its culture, and national consciousness. The perspective on migration processes was at times one of the fundamental elements of a nation’s self-identification.

    In the last period of her professional career, Antonina Kłoskowska focused on issues related to national culture and nation itself, which is evident e.g. in her publication National Cultures at the Grass-Root Level. The article presents Kłoskowska’s main agruments concerning the notion of “national culture”. The author regarded this specific type of culture as one that could be characterized as symbolic, compound and coherent in the syntagmatic sense. Kłoskowska points out that, in order to be recognized as a member of a national community, it is necessary to acquire and refer to the canonical resources of its culture. In the second part of the article some of the findings of contemporary Polish researchers are laid out, which correspond or directly relate to some of Kłoskowska’s ideas. A comparison and analysis of their views leads to a conclusion that their diversification does not generally mean that they are completely distant in their judgments but rather that various aspects are stressed in different ways. This attests, however, to the fact that the authors belonged to diverse intellectual formations.

    The author aims at both reviewing the previous sociological studies devoted to the Western Lands as well as proposing the project for the future studies on this area. According to the author, the major drawback of the previous research is its strict focus to the region. The up to date research was primarily considering the two groups of factors: the ones contributing to the emergence of an integrated community at the Western Lands or the ones influencing the acceleration of the Western Lands' integration with the rest of the country. In these studies the key categories were normalization, stabilization, adaptation and assimilation. Yet, the author contends that by far more intriguing research agenda lies in the question of if and how the novel post-war shape of the Polish state has been internalized by the society. This research agenda is of particular relevance to the students of political culture. The research on the Western Lands has to be brought onto national level. In new research focused on political culture the issues of the transformation of historical consciousness and Polish national identity shall gain the prime importance.
