Opis:
Medicine, in the ancient time an empirical, often mysterious knowledge, aimed to help suffering people. It developed quickly and massively entering the way of scientific research in the last few centuries. Recently, it has shifted from natural towards social sciences to fulfill the demands and expectations of societies. Highly sophisticated and expensive tools and very complicated health care systems result in continuous reforms in teaching professionals. The inadequately controlled progress in medical practice creates dangers to social health and safety, surprisingly raising dissatisfaction and mass contestation. Such situation generates the need for reasonable health policy in steering scientific research to the most burning social problems instead to those most ambitious, fascinating, and promising biggest financial profit. That is why energetic movements for high level of ethics in scientific research and among health care professionals has been called for all over the world. Further development in medical sciences and progress in medical practice will certainly continue and both are highly desirable, however they should never disregard the rank of social needs which in various countries may be different.

The issue of linguistic interference will be analysed from the point of view of medical translations in the Italian-Polish linguistic pair. Since linguistic interference can manifest itself at almost all levels of the text (phonetic, orthographic, morphological, syntactic, socio-cultural), with the analysis of the fragments taken from translated medical documents we would like to understand which are the most frequent cases of the phenomenon when it comes to translated medical texts and which factors favour the interference most.

Opis:
The social life of disabled people is understudied despite the fact that it is a burning social issue. The author concentrates on rehabilitation as a system of institutions (in contrast to the other perspective on rehabilitation that places an individual in the centre of attention and thus treats rehabilitation as a social process). Rehabilitation is defined at a purposeful act. In order for this act to be meaningfully conducted (and analyzed), it is necessary to define (1) the grounds for decision making (2) diagnosis and (3) the criteria for effects evaluation. In the first domain the author advocates the view, that rehabilitation is not only a process of regaining physical health, but also - and perhaps more importantly - a return to society: to family, social and professional life. The dimension of diagnosis is analyzed through the two case studies (research on people after heart attack and after the amputation of one or both legs). Medical factors did not affect the decision to return to work. The social factors - such as type of work, education and age - appeared to be more crucial. In the third dimension the evaluation of the efficiency of rehabilitation is difficult due to a number of uncontrolled intervening factors. The author suggests that the problem can be solved by means of (a) the operationalization of all rehabilitation procedures and (b) defining the rehabilitation goals so that it will allow deriving the criteria for judging the degree of success (or failure) of the process.

Opis:
The literature is undisputed regarding the impact of mental health on public health, and there has been an increase in the use of primary healthcare, in particular, the consultations of general practitioners (GPs), with issues at this level. In the literature on the subject, the psychological intervention has been indicated as a positive factor in reversing this trend, and it is in this context that the present study was developed. We intend to explore the differences in the number of GP consultations prior to and after the psychology consultation in a Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC). To this end, data from 845 healthcare center users were collected between June 2004 and September 2014. Student’s t-test and mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed. The results point out a decrease in the number of GP consultations in the period subsequent to the first psychological consultation. We discuss that psychological intervention seems to have a positive effect, not only in improving the mental health of the population but also in the containment of costs in the health sector. The importance of the role of psychology in PHC was assumed.

Opis:
This article presents selected aspects of the discussion on the cognitive status of explanatory hypotheses that were formulated at the end of the 20th century in cardiology in relation to abnormal phenomena observed in clinical practice. The aim is to provide a critical analysis of the validation process for such hypotheses. We are going to point out how their formulation contributed to the creation of three dimensions of the dispute: methodological, ontological and pragmatic. We will argue for the two theses. Firstly, due to the non-falsifiability of formulated explanatory hypotheses an instrumental attitude was adopted. Secondly, it will be demonstrated that adopted cognitive attitudes influenced the evaluation of clinical situations, and as a result, they had an impact on the decision-making process.

A significant number of cases of clinical canine epilepsy remain difficult to control in spite of the applied treatment. At the same time, the range of antiepileptic drugs is increasingly wide, which allows efficient treatment. In the present paper we describe the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the newer antiepileptic drugs which were licensed after 1990 but are still not widely used in veterinary medicine. The pharmacokinetic profiles of six of these drugs were tested on dogs. The results of experimental studies suggest that second generation antiepileptic drugs may be applied in mono- as well as in poli- treatment of canine epilepsy because of the larger safety margin and more advantageous pharmacokinetic parameters. Knowledge of the drugs’ pharmacokinetics allows its proper clinical appliance, which, in turn, gives the chance to improve the efficiency of pharmacotherapy of canine epilepsy.

Italian language for specific purposes – medicine
włoski język specjalistyczny – medycyna
Opis:
The aim of the paper is to analyse the Italian medical terminology, in particular will be taken into consideration the link between names of different illnesses and rhetoric procedures that might have influenced their lexical form. The examples of medical nomenclature will enable to illustrate the attitude towards the concept of illness and to show the complexity of phenomena perception and the impossibility to understand them completely. For this reason literary tropes, especially metonymy, enable to create terminology, although it will be never enough sufficient to guarantee the highest precision of these concepts.

Opis:
Cellular therapy, as a part of regenerative medicine, implies to the treatment of human disorders with cells as a medical product, so called – “living drugs”. Usually such therapy is applied when other alternative efficient pharmacological therapies are not available. Stem cells of different origin: 1) tissue specific e.g. hematopethic, epithelial, neuronal, limbal; 2) mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) harvested from variety of tissues; 3) pluripotent stem cells: embryonic stem cells (ESC) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) – serve as a source of cells for regenerative medicine application, depending upon disease and application re- quirements. Currently MSC are the type of stem cells that are most frequently used in registered regenerative medicine clinical trials. In this paper we provide the information on the application of cell therapy in orthopedics, hematology, ophthalmology, dermatology, gastrology and neurology. The influence of origin of MSCs and iPSCs on their mode of action as therapeutic, regenerative agents are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of application of different cell types for cell therapy are underlined. Last, but not least current low regulations in Poland and requirements of European regulatory bodies for cell therapy are pointed out and discussed.
