    The article presents an analysis of the urban policy being implemented in the Mazovian Region. The actions addressed to urban areas are analyzed retrospectively and prospectively in the context of the key Mazovian strategic and implementation documents. There follows a characteristic of the mechanisms and solutions of particular importance to the future of urban policy in Mazovia. Finally, recommendations concerning the development of the Mazovian Region are presented, with special focus on the development of urban areas. The recommendations are based on the analyses and studies conducted within the Development Trends of Mazovia project.

    Opis:
    The malacofauna of the palaeolake deposits at Szymanowo (eastern Poland) was investigated. It represents the younger part of the climatic optimum of the Mazovian (Holsteinian) Interglacial (~MIS 11) and possibly the postoptimal period. The mollusc assemblage is composed of both standing and running water species, mostly connected with temperate climate. The presence of biostratigraphical indicators of the Mazovian, Viviparus diluvianus (Kunth, 1865), Lithoglyphus jahni Urbański, 1975 and Pisidium clessini Neumayr, 1875, is noteworthy. Variability in the structure and composition of the assemblage enables palaeoecological reconstruction. Changes in the water-level, vegetation and energy conditions are inferred from the malacological succession. Three stages of the lake development were distinguished. The first one is connected with deeper conditions and predominance of V. diluvianus and L. jahni. The second one, dominated by Bithynia tentaculata (Linnaeus, 1758), records a fall of the water-level and the growth of aquatic plants, evidenced by high frequencies of Valvata cristata Müller, 1774 and Acroloxus lacustris (Linnaeus, 1758). The third stage corresponds to another rise of the water-level and an increase in V. diluvianus, L. jahni, Valvata piscinalis Müller, 1774 and Pisidium henslowanum (Sheppard, 1823), which evidence some higher energy conditions.

    The article presents results of research of three sections (Kuców 9, 10 and 16). Two of them record fluvial and lacustrine interglacial sediments and the third, cold-stage glaciolacustrine sediments. They were formed inside the Miocene – Pliocene syncline depressions in a central part of the southern horst within the Kleszczów Graben. Fluvial and lacustrine deposits of the Middle Pleistocene Interglacial (Mazovian or Ferdynandovian in the Czyżów Formation) are described from the Kuców 9 and 10 sections. Their sediments are located in marginal parts of a buried river valley and within an oxbow palaeolake, then covered by glaciofluvial deposits of the Ławki (Early Saalian) and Rogowiec (Late Saalian) Formations. The Kuców 16 section comprises ice-dam sandy lithofacies (Kuców Formation, Elsterian) of a marginal part in a proglacial lake. Two pollen diagrams of K65/15 and Kuców 9 sections represent the Mazovian (Holsteinian) succession, although in the Kuców 9 section some features are typical for the Ferdinandovian succession.

Pol len spec tra in di cated strong pre dom i nance of Carpinus in the op ti mum phase (pol len pe riod III), sug gest ing in ten - sive in flu ence of con ti nen tal cli mate in this part of Po land. The paleolake Dobropol was shal low, with many spe cies of rushes in a lit to ral zone. Dur ing the Liviecian (MIS 10) and the Krznanian (MIS 8) Glaciations the res er voir was oc cupied by an ice-dam lake, in which silt and clay de po si tion pre vailed. The Mazovian Inter gla cial or ganic de pos its were also re corded in im me di ate sur round ings of the study area. Based on geo log i cal and paleobotanical ex am i na tion of the Dobropol site, the ice sheet of the Krznanian Gla ci ation seemed to have reached at least the south ern part of Włodawa. The ice sheet has not cov ered pre sum ably the whole study area as its ad vance oc curred in sev eral lobes. The sur roundings of W³odawa in the West Polesie Re gion are the third larg est Mazovian paleo-lakeland area in Po land, apart from the vi cin i ties of Biała Podlaska and the £uków Plain.
