Opis:
The papers deals with methodological questions of writing a general history of science. We start by defining the scope of general history of science and its relation to general history, followed by a discussion on recent trends in history and philosophy of science. We also examine the impact of the developments in the humanities since the 1970s on disciplines reflecting on science. The second part of the paper focuses on the approach of science and politics as resources for one other, developed by Mitchell Ash, to describing scientific changes in times of radical regime upheavals. We also discuss the intersection between current science and politics framing historians as engaged intellectuals.

Opis:
This text is an interpretation of Norbert Elias’s biography, his autobiographical writings, and certain aspects of his work in light of Patrick Baert’s positioning theory. Beginning from a critical analysis of the story of Elias’s life, career, and scholarship, through a reconstruction of the typical properties of his writing style and academic abilities, the author uses Elias to describe an intellectual strategy which she calls ‘balancing on the margins’. She considers it a legitimate strategy for maintaining oneself in the academic field—under certain conditions more productive and less risky than a strategy aimed at occupying a central position in the academic field.

The main goal of this paper is to present a fully developed concept of Paul A. Roth’s philosophy of history to the Polish reader. Of course, it is just an introduction, but with the interview it should be a good starting point for further analysis. These seem desirable given Roth’s very ambitious programme, which in addition is based on “old facts”; that is, an analytical philosophy of history and science. The rapprochement between the two “visions” is not only a philosophical consideration, but also responds to the often-raised voices of practitioners. This introduction refers primarily to Roth’s latest book, indicating a possible interpretation. This “reading” is conducted by indicating the historical context, recalling philosophical analyses and determining the validity of the proposed solutions in order to decide how much science there is in history and vice versa.

Opis:
Gaston Milhaud (1858–1918) was a French modern philosopher, who, having started from mathematics, came to philosophy (especially epistemology) and history of science. His works on the history of science were devoted to Greek science and modern science. Milhaud in his papers claimed that important concepts and principles of science (in different disciplines) result from decisions that simultaneously transcend both experience and logic. He emphasized the role of free creation and activity of the mind. The author discusses central problems of Milhaud’s thought, especially the problem of the relationship between science and philosophy.

The author raises questions concerning the phenomenon of manifestos in science and specific theses advanced by the authors of The History Manifesto. The first question is whether a manifesto on the role of historiography in the contemporary world, calling for a revival of a certain seemingly bygone ideal of science, symbolised by the works of Fernand Braudel, can be the subject of scientific criticism at all. The second question is whether the diagnosis of a crisis in the role of history as an expert science is accurate, and whether its claims to this role are altogether valid in the modern world.

The article aims to analyse the context in which the phrase “historical truth” is present in the Polish public discourse regarding recent history. The author intends to show the ways and aims of the usage of historical truth in the competition to obtain and maintain power. Referring to the assumptions of the Web 2.0. paradigm, in the conclusion the author puts forward the thesis that the historical truths present in the public sphere do not only attempt to answer social expectations of what historical truth Poles need but they are also co-created by potential recipients.

The goal of the article is to propose a different approach to – and therefore a new concept of – the history of thinking. Reflecting on the history of philosophy, it suggests a broader understanding of the latter. Yet traditional studies in the history of philosophy are not to be rejected; they need to be reformed, and such a reform could be performed basing on the experiences of the discipline of historiography. Thus conceived, the history of thinking could open us to a different future.

Tekst stanowi polemikę z poglądem Emily R. Grosholz, zgodnie z którym czas u Leibniza ma kierunek. Autorka ta wyciąga wniosek na temat „skrajnej asymetrii“ czasu u Leibniza z zasady racji dostatecznej, z której według niej wynika, że najlepszy z możliwych światów staje się z każdą chwilą coraz doskonalszy. Argumentuję, że możemy uniknąć wniosku Grosholz i nie odrzucając ani tezy o ustawicznym i wszechobecnym ruchu oraz dążeniu do doskonałości, obecnym w monadach, ani tezy o nadrzędności zasad metafizycznych, wciąż utrzymywać, że w świetle filozofii Leibniza kierunek czasu nie ma osobnego metafizycznego znaczenia, a jego źródłem jest projekcja naszego sposobu postrzegania.

The main aim of the article was to present two emerging discourses of contemporary historiography in the field of digital media. In the first example, the authors present the thought of Niels Brügger, called the Web History and Web-minded historiography, which concentrates upon the digital source itself. The other school is marked by the works of Friedrich Kittler and Wolfgang Ernst, and called media archaeology. It underlines the concept of the medium itself as a primary object of research.
