Opis:
The paper presents an idea of predicting durability of concrete structures with steel reinforcement under conditions of chloride and carbonation corrosion risk. Mechanisms of destruction due to steel corrosion in such conditions are shown. The recently elaborated model of carbonation and general model of chloride diffusion have been discussed. An algorithm of the rest service life time prognosis has been shown and options of its main stages realization have been done. An example of durability prognosis for pre-stressed hollow-core floor slab with upper layer of concrete and epoxy-resin coating has been given. This example confirms the usefulness of the described prognosis method and demonstrates its helpfulness in a structure management according to the standards of EN 1504 series.

The aim of the study is to show the improvements on durability of prestressed concrete elements by introducing in concrete mass a certain quantity of fibres. Random distributed fibres provide a significant increase in the tensile strength, having also favourable consequence on other mechanical and durability characteristics. The prestressed concrete elements are under a permanent stress state that is not optimal in all their sections and zones. One of the most unfavourable effects is the reduction of material durability, especially in aggressive environments, in which prestressed reinforcements are more sensitive to utilization than reinforced concrete components. The authors present the result brought up by the use of steel fibres in the improvement of the durability of concrete elements, in relation with the volumetric steel ratio, and the geometrical ratio of steel fibres, leading to a favourable effect on prestressing efficiency.

The present paper is comparing the results of research studies carried out for three road acoustic screens of different design and different number of damping layers. For the tests, we selected timber or steel screens with a traditional multilayer structure and also one innovative type of simplified design. With respect to particular panels, their sound absorption properties were investigated in the reverberation chamber after they had been subjected to simulated weathering. In the process, two screens were subjected to the aging tests of 50-500 cycles in a special climatic chamber, and the innovative screens were subjected to 1000 cycles. The procedure was repeated every 50 or 100 cycles in order to obtain the changes of acoustic characteristics. The changes taking place in the absorbing material were also investigated with the use of scanning electron microscopy method (SEM). Basing on the obtained results and on the statistical analysis, the capability to maintain acoustic properties by the panels during their service life in natural conditions was estimated. For that purpose, linear statistical models were worked out, which were then applied to estimate the value of the single number sound absorption coefficient after successive aging cycles as well as the predicted time periods of acoustic class changes.

Opis:
One of the main threats to constructions made from rammed earth is destruction due to exposure to water. The way to limit this dangerous phenomenon is to supplement the local soil mixtures with stabilizing agents. The main component used is Portland cement. This article analyses the results of research which focused on the resistance of rammed earth to water erosion. Because of the lack of national standards regarding the method of examining the durability of rammed earth, the research was based on the New Zealand standard NZS 4298: 1998. The results confirm the possibility of using rammed earth stabilized by cement in a temperate climate.
Jednym z głównych zagrożeń dla konstrukcji wykonywanych w technologii ziemi ubijanej jest destrukcja pod wpływem wody. Sposobem na ograniczenie tego niebezpiecznego zjawiska jest uzupełnienie mieszanki lokalnie dostępnych gruntów o składniki stabilizujące. Najczęściej stosowanym składnikiem jest cement portlandzki. W niniejszym artykule przeanalizowano wyniki badań odporności ziemi ubijanej na erozję wodną. Ze względu na brak krajowych norm dotyczących sposobu badania trwałości ziemi ubijanej, badania zostały wykonane w oparciu o normę nowozelandzką NZS 4298: 1998. Uzyskane wyniki pozytywnie weryfikują możliwość stonowania ziemi ubijanej stabilizowanej cementem w klimacie umiarkowanym.

The paper presents a description of the phenomena occurring on the surface of the forging dies. A detailed analysis was made of 24 pre-forging dies due to the most intensive wear in this operation. To compare the results, new tools were also analysed. The research described in the study showed that the most dangerous factor for the hot forging process analysed is thermal-mechanical fatigue, which causes small cracks, which in turn quickly leads to the formation of a crack network on the entire contact surface of the tool with forged material. The second phenomenon is the tempering of the surface of the material for a long-term temperature effect. The presence of hard iron oxides in the form of scale from forging material is the accompanying phenomenon that intensifies the processes of tool wear. The paper presents the results of the analysis of the presence of residual magnetic field for forging tools and the results of laboratory tests of wear processes of tool steels for hot work in the presence of a magnetic field and in the presence of scale.

This study is focused on tools used in the industrial process of hot forging of a front wheel forging (gear wheel) manufactured for the automotive industry. Five different variants were applied for the tools: 3 die inserts were coated with three different hybrid layers (PN + PVD type), i.e. AlCrTiN, AlCrTiSiN and CrN, one insert was only nitrided, and one was pad welded, to improve tool durability. The tool wear was analysed and represented by the material degradation on the working surface, based on the 3D scanning and the material growth of the periodically collected forgings. Additionally, the scanned tools were divided into two areas, in which it was found, based on the analysis, that various degradation mechanisms are predominant. Microstructural tests and hardness measurements of the analyzed tools were also performed. Based on the results, it was found that, in the central part of the die insert, thermo-mechanical fatigue, abrasive wear and plastic deformation occurred, while in the area of the bridge insert, only abrasive wear could be observed. For these areas, the loss of material was determined separately. It was established that the use of the GN+CrN and GN+AlCrTiN hybrid layers on forging tools improves their durability, while the best results in the central area were observed on the tool with the GN+CrN layer, which is the most resistant to thermo-mechanical fatigue. In the second analyzed area, good wear resistance occurred on GN+CrN, GN+AlCrTiN and pad welded inserts, for which, together with the increase of the forging number, a proportional, slight growth of the loss of material occurred.

In order to the long-term stability of DSE for electroplating process, the lifetime equations were calculated from the results of the accelerated life testing, and the lifetime of DSE was predicted. The nano-embossing pre-treatment led to 2.65 times in the lifetime of DSE. The degradation mechanism of DSE with a thick metal oxide layer for applied highly current density process condition was identified. The improvement of durability of DSE seems to be closely related to adhesion between titanium plate and mixed metal oxide layer.

The study presents a durability analysis of dies used in the first operation of producing a valve-type forging from high nickel steel assigned to be applied in motor truck engines. The analyzed process of producing exhaust valves is realized in the forward extrusion technology and next through forging in closed dies. It is difficult to master, mainly due to the increased adhesion of the charge material (high nickel steel) to the tool’s substrate. The mean durability of tools made of tool steel W360, subjected to thermal treatment and nitriding, equals about 1000 forgings. In order to perform a thorough analysis, complex investigations were carried out, which included: a macroscopic analysis combined with laser scanning, numerical modelling by FEM, microstructural tests on a scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy (metallographic), as well as hardness tests. The preliminary results showed the presence of traces of abrasive wear, fatigue cracks as well as traces of adhesive wear and plastic deformation on the surface of the dies. Also, the effect of the forging material being stuck to the tool surface was observed, caused by the excessive friction in the forging’s contact with the tool and the presence of intermetallic phases in the nickel-chromium steel. The obtained results demonstrated numerous tool cracks, excessive friction, especially in the area of sectional reduction, as well as sticking of the forging material, which, with insufficient control of the tribological conditions, may be the cause of premature wear of the dies.

The crash box between a bumper and a car body in automobiles can reduce impacts for car bodies with a bumper at a low-speed collision by preventing the shocks. Also, this crash box is the part playing a very important role for the safety of vehicle and the reduction of repair cost, and many studies have been investigated for the performance. In this study, aluminum foam was inserted in an aluminum crash box to analyze the relationships of deformation, stress and internal energy. The compression characteristics are compared with six cases. In addition, the load due to displacement at experiment for a case is verified by modeling with finite elements and performing the structural analysis. As these study results for investigating characteristics of the crash box, it is thought that the effective designs of crash box to enhance the durability for collision are made possible.

The objective of the paper is to analyze the effect of substrate roughness and superficial microcraking upon adhesion of repair systems using concrete surface engineering approach. The results presented in this paper have been obtained within the framework of research projects performed to develop a better understanding of the factors affecting the adhesion of repair materials through a surface engineering approach. Based on the results of investigations, the authors showed that the durability and quality of concrete repairs depend to a large degree on the characteristics of the substrate. Mechanical preparation and profiling of the concrete surface to be repaired has to be balanced with potential co-lateral effects such as superficial cracking, too often induced as a result of inappropriate concrete removal method selection, and the loss of benefits due to better mechanical anchorage. The results obtained confirm also that Concrete Surface Engineering, as a scientific concept, will definitely contribute to shed more light on how to optimize repair bond, taking into account interactions between the materials at different observation scales.

Oxidation and indentation properties of silicon carbide-coated carbon composites were investigated to analyze its durability under atmospheric thermal shock conditions. The silicon carbide-coated samples were prepared either with chemical vapor deposition or chemical vapor reaction/chemical vapor deposition hybrid coating. The remnant weight of uncoated and coated samples was investigated after each thermal shock cycle. The surface and cross-section of coated samples were then analyzed to confirm morphological changes of the coating layers. The spherical indentation test for uncoated and coated samples were also performed. As a result, silicon carbide coating improved the oxidation resistance, elastic modulus, and hardness of carbon composites. Hybrid coating drastically enhanced the durability of samples at high temperature in atmospheric conditions.

The subject of the article is a comparison of two types of concrete carbonation models: self-limited carbonation and infinite carbonation. The results of the research on the progress of carbonation during six years of sample exposure in natural atmospheric conditions were used to determine the detailed models for a set of concretes with different w/c and different types of cement, and two scenarios of initial curing. It has been established that the model of self-limiting carbonation (i.e. hyperbolic) is more adequate for describing laboratory tests results in natural conditions.

Opis:
Concrete is generally produced using materials such as crushed stone and river sand to the extent of about 80-90% combined with cement and water. These materials are quarried from natural sources. Their depletion will cause strain on the environment. To prevent this, bottom ash produced at thermal power plants by burning of coal has been utilized in this investigation into making concrete. The experimental investigation presents the development of concrete containing lignite coal bottom ash as fine aggregate in various percentages of 25, 50, and 100. Compressive, split tensile, and flexural strength as part of mechanical properties; acid, sulphate attack, and sustainability under elevated temperature as part of durability properties, were determined. These properties were compared with that of normal concrete. It was concluded from this investigation that bottom ash to an extent of 25% can be substituted in place of river sand in the production of concrete.
Beton jest popularnym materiałem budowlanym przygotowywanym przy użyciu lokalnie dostępnych materiałów, takich jak tłuczeń kamienny, piasek i woda. Cement natomiast jest fabrycznie produkowanym składnikiem łączącym wszystkie te materiały. Materiały są dostosowane do wymagań, dobrze wymieszane i umieszczone w formie szalunkowej. Po około 18 do 24 godzin, usuwa się formę szalunkową, a beton pozostawia się do stwardnienia, jednocześnie pielęgnując go poprzez polewanie wodą przez około 28 dni lub aż do dnia badania. W miarę wydobywania tłucznia kamiennego oraz piasku z naturalnych źródeł, wykorzystywanie tych materiałów na dużą skalę nie tylko wyczerpuje źródła, ale również negatywnie wpływa na środowisko. Zbadanie alternatyw dla tych materiałów okazuje się być tym bardziej konieczne. Obecnie działalność człowieka generuje duże ilości odpadów przemysłowych, rolniczych, itp. Jednym z takich odpadów przemysłowych jest popiół denny otrzymywany z elektrowni cieplnych po spalaniu węgla w procesie wytwarzania energii elektrycznej. Struktura popiołu dennego uznaje się za podobną do piasku rzecznego, używanego jako drobne kruszywo do wytwarzaniu betonu. Charakterystyka popiołu dennego nie wszędzie wygląda tak samo, ponieważ właściwości węgla również zmieniają się w zależności od miejsca. Popiół denny z węgla brunatnego uzyskano z elektrociepłowni Neyveli Thermal Power Plant w Indiach i wykorzystano w badaniu eksperymentalnym, jako drobne kruszywo do przygotowania betonu. Popiół denny został użyty w celu zastąpienia piasku rzecznego według wskaźnika 25%, 50% i 100%. Określono właściwości fizyczne i chemiczne popiołu dennego.

This article discusses the results of studies using the developed artificial neural networks in the analysis of the occurrence of the four main mechanisms destroying the selected forging tools subjected to five different surface treatment variants (nitrided layer, pad welded layer and three hybrid layers, i.e. AlCrTiSiN, Cr/CrN and Cr/AlCrTiN). Knowledge of the forging tool durability, needed in the process of artificial neural network training, was included in the set of training data (about 800 records) derived from long-term comprehensive research carried out under industrial conditions. Based on this set, neural networks with different architectures were developed and the results concerning the intensity of the occurrence of thermal-mechanical fatigue, abrasive wear, mechanical fatigue and plastic deformation were generated for each type of the applied treatment relative to the number of forgings, pressure, friction path and temperature.

In Poland, due to the increase in investments made by railways in recent years, and thus the increase in the replacement value of transport infrastructure, the need for expenditure on infrastructure maintenance will increase in the next 30 years, or the development of the developed transport network will degrade. As part of the overall discipline of resource management, subdiscipline has emerged - infrastructure asset management. As part of the management of railway transport infrastructure, the demand for cheaper maintenance costs will grow. The cost reduction of infrastructure maintenance is possible through meticulous assessment of its condition, rational selection of locations and scope of repairs at the assumed risk level, as well as at the stage of preparation of new construction or modernization projects taking into account aspects of later maintenance. For some time, we have been observing the accumulation of knowledge (methods, programs, procedures) in the country and abroad enabling optimization of infrastructure condition assessment and programming of its maintenance. The implementation of these solutions may result in a more rational use of funds for infrastructure maintenance and not disturb its smooth functioning in operation. The article discusses aspects that should be considered in the design process of railway infrastructure. Particular attention was paid to the durability of steel components of the railway superstructure, maintenance costs as well as aspects related to the capacity of the track node. An example of dependence of selected values of radial arcs depending on their durability and maintenance costs was presented. It was proposed to change the track layout at the Warszawa Srodmiescie passenger stop planned for reconstruction. Calculations of kinematic parameters for various configurations of railway turnouts were performed. Also, calculations of the capacity for the existing track system solution as well as the proposed track system after reconstruction of the analysed Warszawa Srodmiescie railway station were also carried out.
