Opis:: Oxidation and indentation properties of silicon carbide-coated carbon composites were investigated to analyze its durability under atmospheric thermal shock conditions. The silicon carbide-coated samples were prepared either with chemical vapor deposition or chemical vapor reaction/chemical vapor deposition hybrid coating. The remnant weight of uncoated and coated samples was investigated after each thermal shock cycle. The surface and cross-section of coated samples were then analyzed to confirm morphological changes of the coating layers. The spherical indentation test for uncoated and coated samples were also performed. As a result, silicon carbide coating improved the oxidation resistance, elastic modulus, and hardness of carbon composites. Hybrid coating drastically enhanced the durability of samples at high temperature in atmospheric conditions.

Opis:: The genetic resistance of potato varieties can be utilized to lower the fungicide rates used for plant protection against late blight. The very resistant varieties can be protected with half the rate of fungicide without negative effect on efficiency of the control.
Odporność genetyczna odmian ziemniaka może być wykorzystana do zmniejszania dawek fungicydów, stosowanych w ochronie plantacji ziemniaka przed zarazą. Odmiany bardzo odporne (Meduza) mogą pozostawać niechronione lub mogą być chronione fungicydami, stosowanymi w dawkach zmniejszonych o połowę (dla uniknięcia problemów ewentualnie zwiększonej presji infekcyjnej patogena w ciągu okresu wegetacji). Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że odmiany podatne na zarazę (Karlena) wymagają ochrony prowadzonej w pełnych zalecanych dawkach fungicydów w każdym roku, niezależnie od presji infekcyjnej patogenu. Dla niektórych odmian, nawet o średniej odporności (Panda) wystarczające są dawki zmniejszone do 50-75% by skutecznie hamowały rozwój zarazy w niektóre lata. Różne odmiany mogą reagowa w różny sposób na zmniejszanie dawek fungicydów. W przeprowadzonych badaniach stwierdzono istotne współdziałanie odmian i dawek fungicydowych. Uwzględnienie genetycznej odporności odmian ziemniaka na zarazę pozwala obniża dawki stosowanych fungicydów, z zachowaniem zadawalającej skuteczności ochrony, co może by ważne ze względu na ochronę środowiska.

Opis:: FeCl₃ bearing etching solution is mainly used for etching of metals used in shadow masks, PCBs and so on. Due course of Invar alloy etching process the FeCl₃ bearing etching solution get contaminated with Ni²⁺ which affect adversely the etching efficiency. Hence, FeCl₃ bearing etching solution discarded after several cycle of operation causes an environmental and economic problem. To address both the issues the etching solution was purified through solvent extraction and remained Ni²⁺ recovered by wet chemical reduction using hydrazine. For optimum Fe³⁺ extraction efficiency, various extraction parameter were optimized and size and morphology of the recovered pure Ni powder was analyzed. The reported process is a simple process to purify and recover Ni from industry etching solution.

Opis:: In this study, we demonstrated a method of controllably synthesizing one-dimensional nanostructures having a dense or a hollow structure using fibrous sacrificial templates with tunable crystallinity. The fibrous Ga2O3 templates were prepared by calcining the polymer/gallium precursor nanofiber synthesized by an electrospinning process, and their crystallinity was varied by controlling the calcination temperature from 500°C to 900°C. GaN nanostructures were transformed by nitriding the Ga2O3 nanofibers using NH3 gas. All of the transformed GaN nanostructures maintained a one-dimensional structure well and exhibited a diameter of about 50 nm, but their morphology was clearly distinguished according to the crystallinity of the templates. When the templates having a relatively low crystallinity were used, the transformed GaN showed a hollow nanostructure, and as the crystallinity increased, GaN was converted into a denser nanostructure. This morphological difference can be explained as being caused by the difference in the diffusion rate of Ga depending on the crystallinity of Ga2O3 during the conversion from Ga2O3 to GaN. It is expected that this technique will make possible the tubular nanostructure synthesis of nitride functional nanomaterials.

Opis:: Raman spectroscopy has become more popular due to its new prospective field applications in forensic sciences, war against terrorism, environment protection and other field chemical analysis. Raman spectrometers can be miniaturised to portable devices and their price is decreasing due to development of optoelectronics components. Unfortunately, this technology has still numerous limitations that influence their design and limit the scope of possible applications. The conception and design of the portable Raman spectrometer is described, including discussion of performance and limitations of representative components of such device available on the market. An enhanced portable Raman spectrometer using two lasers, one emitting at 355 nm and the other at 785 nm, and employing advanced signal acquisition and data processing methods is presenented. Advantages of such system are outlined and example measurement results acquired using equivalent hardware are presented. Data processing flow for identification of chemicals is also described.
