Opis:: In order to predict the distribution of shrinkage porosity in steel ingot efficiently and accurately, a criterion R√L and a method to obtain its threshold value were proposed. The criterion R√L was derived based on the solidification characteristics of steel ingot and pressure gradient in the mushy zone, in which the physical properties, the thermal parameters, the structure of the mushy zone and the secondary dendrite arm spacing were all taken into consideration. The threshold value of the criterion R√L was obtained with combination of numerical simulation of ingot solidification and total solidification shrinkage rate. Prediction of the shrinkage porosity in a 5.5 ton ingot of 2Cr13 steel with criterion R√L>0.21 m･℃1/2･s-3/2 agreed well with the results of experimental sectioning. Based on this criterion, optimization of the ingot was carried out by decreasing the height-to-diameter ratio and increasing the taper, which successfully eliminated the centreline porosity and further proved the applicability of this criterion.

Opis:: A novel magneto-optical current sensor (MOCS) with two sensing arms is proposed to improve the temperature stability. One of the arms, with a highly stable permanent magnet attached and orthogonal to the other one, is designed to provide a reference that follows the temperature characteristics of the sensing material. By a normalization operation between two arms, the temperature drift is compensated adaptively and a sensing output proportional to the measured current can be reached. A dual-input and dual-output structure is specially designed for the reference sensing arm to demodulate the DC Faraday rotation angle. This scheme compensates simultaneously two main temperature influence factors, the Verdet constant and linear birefringence. Validation tests were carried out and are discussed.

Opis:: Canine mammary tumors are the most common neoplasms in intact female dogs. The surgery cannot always solve the problem, chemotherapy are recommend to these patients. However, chemotherapy could always fail because of multidrug resistance (MDR). Through stepwise increasing 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) concentration in the culture medium, a 5-FU-resistant canine mammary tumor cell line CMT7364/5-FU was established to disclose the molecular mechanism of the drug resistance. Cell morphology, cell sensitivity to drugs, growth curves, expression of proteins, and chemo-sensitivity in vivo were compared between the parental cell line and resistant cell line. As compared it to its parental cell line (CMT7364), CMT7364/5-FU showed different morphology, cross-resistant to other chemo-drugs and a prolonged population doubling time (PDT). The drug efflux pump proteins (ABCB1 and ABCG2) in CMT7364/5-FU were up-regulated. In vivo, the similar result revealed that CMT7364/5-FU cell line was more resistant to 5-FU. In conclusion, a 5-FU-resistant canine mammary tumor cell line (CMT7364/5-FU) was successfully established, it can serve as a good model for researching the mechanism of MDR and screening effective agents to reverse drug resistance.

Opis:: Real-time monitoring of deformation of large structure parts is of great significance and the deformation of such structure parts is often accompanied with the change of curvature. The curvature can be obtained by measuring changes of strain, surface curve and modal displacement of the structure. However, many factors are faced with difficulty in measurement and low sensitivity at a small deformation level. In order to measure curvature in an effective way, a novel fibre Bragg grating (FBG) curvature sensor is proposed, which aims at removing the deficiencies of traditional methods in low precision and narrow adjusting. The sensor combines two FBGs with a specific structure of stainless steel elastomer. The elastomer can transfer the strain of the structure part to the FBG and then the FBG measures the strain to obtain the curvature. The performed simulation and experiment show that the sensor can effectively amplify the strain to the FBG through the unique structure of the elastomer, and the accuracy of the sensor used in the experiment is increased by 14% compared with that of the FBG used for direct measurement.

Opis:: For the past two decades, atomic force acoustic microscopy (AFAM), an advanced scanning probe microscopy technique, has played a promising role in materials characterization with a good lateral resolution at micro/nano dimensions. AFAM is based on inducing out-of-plane vibrations in the specimen, which are generated by an ultrasonic transducer. The vibrations are sensed by the AFM cantilever when its tip is in contact with the material under test. From the cantilver’s contactresonance spectra, one determines the real and the imaginary part of the contact stiffness k*, and then from these two quantities the local indentation modulus M' and the local damping factor Q_loc^-1 can be obtained with a spatial resolution of less than 10 nm. Here, we present measured data of M' and of Q_loc^-1 for the insulating amorphous material, a-SiO₂. The amorphous SiO₂ layer was prepared on a crystalline Si wafer by means of thermal oxidation. There is a spatial distribution of the indentation modulus M' and of the internal friction Q_loc^-1. This is a consequence of the potential energy landscape for amorphous materials.
