This paper proposes a new adaptive sliding mode control scheme for achieving coordinated motion control of a group of autonomous underwater vehicles with variable added mass. The control law considers the communication constraints in the acoustic medium. A common reference frame for velocity is assigned to a virtual leader dynamically. The performances of the proposed adaptive SMC were compared with that of a passivity based controller. To save the time and traveling distance for reaching the FRP by the follower AUVs, a sliding mode controller is proposed in this paper that drives the state trajectory of the AUV into a switching surface in the state space. It is observed from the obtained results that the proposed SMC provides improved performance in terms of accurately tracking the desired trajectory within less time compared to the passivity based controller. A communication consensus is designed ensuring the transfer of information among the AUVs so that they move collectively as a group. The stability of the overall closed-loop systems are analysed using Lyapunov theory and simulation results confirmed the robustness and efficiency of proposed controller.

Opis:
Energy and spectral efficiency are the main challenges in 5th generation of mobile cellular networks. In this paper, we propose an optimization algorithm to optimize the energy efficiency by maximizing the spectral efficiency. Our simulation results show a significant increase in terms of spectral efficiency as well as energy efficiency whenever the mobile user is connected to a low power indoor base station. By applying the proposed algorithm, we show the network performance improvements up to 9 bit/s/Hz in spectral efficiency and 20 Gbit/Joule increase in energy efficiency for the mobile user served by the indoor base station rather than by the outdoor base station.

Simultaneous perception of audio and visual stimuli often causes concealment or misrepresentation of information actually contained in these stimuli. Such effects are called the "image proximity effect" or the "ventriloquism effect" in the literature. Until recently, most research carried out to understand their nature was based on subjective assessments. The authors of this paper propose a methodology based on both subjective and objectively retrieved data. In this methodology, objective data reflect the screen areas that attract most attention. The data were collected and processed by an eye-gaze tracking system. To support the proposed methodology, two series of experiments were conducted – one with a commercial eye-gaze tracking system Tobii T60, and another with the Cyber-Eye system developed at the Multimedia Systems Department of the Gdańsk University of Technology. In most cases, the visual-auditory stimuli were presented using a 3D video. It was found that the eye-gaze tracking system did objectivize the results of experiments. Moreover, the tests revealed a strong correlation between the localization of a visual stimulus on which a participant’s gaze focused and the value of the "image proximity effect". It was also proved that gaze tracking may be useful in experiments which aim at evaluation of the proximity effect when presented visual stimuli are stereoscopic.

The object of the present study is to investigate the influence of damping uncertainty and statistical correlation on the dynamic response of structures with random damping parameters in the neighbourhood of a resonant frequency. A Non-Linear Statistical model (NLSM) is successfully demonstrated to predict the probabilistic response of an industrial building structure with correlated random damping. A practical computational technique to generate first and second-order sensitivity derivatives is presented and the validity of the predicted statistical moments is checked by traditional Monte Carlo simulation. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the NLSM to estimate uncertainty propagation in structural dynamics. In addition, it is demonstrated that the uncertainty in damping indeed influences the system response with the effects being more pronounced for lightly damped structures, higher variability and higher statistical correlation of damping parameters.
Nieliniowy Model Statystyczny (NLSM) jest opracowany, aby skutecznie rozpowszechniać niepewność tłumienia w analizach dynamicznych, w celu przewidywania statystyki drugiego rzędu dla probabilistycznej odpowiedzi konstrukcji ze skorelowanymi parametrami tłumienia. Waga tłumienia losowego ze skorelowanymi parametrami oraz ich wpływ na wrażliwość szczytowej odpowiedzi konstrukcyjnej, omawiane są w świetle znaczących zakresów niepewności tłumienia oraz współczynników korelacji. Dodatkowo, wpływ korelacji statystycznej tłumienia na granice przybliżenia Liniowego Modelu Statystycznego (LSM) oraz na NLSM badany jest za pomocą Symulacji Monte Carlo.

The consequences of pearling and cutting (barley Hordeum vulgare L.), and roasting and cutting (buckwheat Fagopyrum esculentum Möench) on the development and food consumption of the confused flour beetle Tribolium confusum Duv. were studied. The factors affecting the increase in the T. confusum population, and food consumption effectiveness (the proportion of wasted food in the whole amount of the used product) were different in barley and buckwheat. The best barley product for T. confusum was the flour. The population number, the proportion of imagines, and the effectiveness of food consumption were relatively high for cut groats, compared to whole barley. The toughness of the whole groats was most likely the cause of the lowest suitability of this product for the confused flour beetle. Neither the size of the cut groats nor the pearling of barley had any effect on T. confusum development and food consumption effectiveness. The best buckwheat product for T. confusum was the whole hulled non-processed groats. In these groats, the total population number, the proportion of imagines, and the effectiveness of food consumption were relatively high compared to cut groats. The total population number was the lowest in the steamed groats. The decrease in nutrients and B vitamins due to the removal of the embryo and aleurone layer during the breaking process of buckwheat, was possibly the main factor affecting T. confusum development and food consumption in buckwheat.

Opis:
Directional response of a vehicle implies changing its direction when sustaining lateral acceleration while moving on the road. From this response, the vehicle's explicit capabilities as well as its contribution to the system performance of the driver/vehicle combination are obtained. In vehicle control literature, handling is often used interchangeably with cornering, turning, or directional response. This paper focuses one aspect of the handling i.e. directional response. Two different controllers, namely a PID controller and a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) are designed in this paper to control the vehicle's steering in a smooth lane change maneuver. The performances of the aforesaid two controllers have been studied extensively in this paper. For achieving an improved path tracking and directional response, parameters of both the PID and FLC have been tuned and their performances have been compared. Further, the effect of changing the scale factors in the fuzzy logic approach to obtaining directional response is presented. To validate the above two control performances, a nonlinear simulation model of a HEV is developed and is used in simulation studies. Both the controllers track the desired directional signal efficiently. Both PID and Fuzzy controllers provide competitive performances. Although with the assumption of all parameters of the vehicle available PID controller exhibits slightly better dynamic performance but in the real-world scenario the fuzzy controller is preferred due to its robustness i.e. it does not depend on the parameters of the vehicle.

Opis:
Considering the recent mass movement of people fleeing war and oppression, an analysis of changes in migration, in particular an analysis of the final destination refugees choose, seems to be of utmost importance. Many international organisations like UNHCR (the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) or EuroStat gather and provide information on the number of refugees and the routes they follow. What is also needed to study the state of affairs closely is a visual form presenting the rapidly changing situation. An analysis of the problem together with up-to-date statistical data presented in the visual form of a map is essential. This article describes methods of preparing such interactive maps displaying movement of refugees in European Union countries. Those maps would show changes taking place throughout recent years but also the dynamics of the development of the refugee crisis in Europe. The ArcGIS software was applied to make the map accessible on the Internet. Additionally, online sources and newspaper articles were used to present the movement of migrants. The interactive map makes it possible to watch spatial data with an opportunity to navigate within the map window. Because of that it is a clear and convenient tool to visualise such processes as refugee migration in Europe.

Experimental modal analysis of a violin with three different tensions of a bass bar has been performed. The bass bar tension is the only intentionally introduced modification of the instrument. The aim of the study was to find differences and similarities between top plate modal parameters determined by a bass bar perfectly fitting the shape of the top plate, the bass bar with a tension usually applied by luthiers (normal), and the tension higher than the normal value. In the modal analysis four signature modes are taken into account. Bass bar tension does not change the sequence of mode shapes. Changes in modal damping are insignificant. An increase in bass bar tension causes an increase in modal frequencies A0 and B(1+) and does not change the frequencies of modes CBR and B(1−).

Opis:
Population density varies sharply from place to place on the whole territory of Poland. The largest number of people per 1 km2 is 21,531, while uninhabited areas account for about 48% of the country. Such uneven, non-Gaussian distribution of the data causes some difficulty in choosing the classification method in geometric choropleth maps. A thorough evaluation of a geometric choropleth map of population data is not possible using only traditional indicators such as the Tabular Accuracy Index (TAI). That is why the aim of the article is to develop an innovative index based on distance analysis and neighbour analysis of grid cells. Two indexes have been suggested in this paper: the Spatial Distance Index (SDI) and the Spatial Contiguity Index (SCI). The paper discusses the use of five classification methods to evaluate choropleth maps of population data, like head-tail breaks, natural breaks, equal intervals, quantile, and geometrical intervals. A comprehensive assessment of such geometric choropleth maps is also done. The research was conducted for the whole territory of Poland, using data from the 2011 National Census of Population and Housing. Population data are presented in the 1km grid. The results of the analysis are shown on thematic maps. A compatibility of the choropleth maps with urban-rural typology of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) was also checked.

Dotychczasowe badania percepcji miast prowadzone były przy niskiej rozdzielczości przestrzennej, najczęściej przez uporządkowanie jednostek administracyjnych albo z wykorzystaniem mapy całego miasta, a następnie interpretowania umiejętności kartograficznych respondentów. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono podejście badawcze, w którym najpierw zostały wydzielone spójne wewnętrznie, wynikające z charakteru miejsca obszary badawcze, pokrywające całe miasto, a percepcję zbadano opierając się na bazie miejsc reprezentatywnych tych obszarów. Okazało się, że znaczną część percepcji determinuje struktura funkcjonalno-przestrzenna miejsca. Odmienne postrzeganie prawo- i lewobrzeżnej Warszawy okazało się jedynie stereotypem. Stymulacyjny charakter miasta dotyczył wyłącznie Śródmieścia, co sugeruje, że całościowy umysłowy obraz miasta powstaje na podstawie charakteru jego centrum. Zostało potwierdzone, że zieleń i woda jest niezbędnym elementem miejsca zamieszkania, pracy i wypoczynku oraz, że niezmiennie od ponad 35 lat najlepiej oceniany jest Trakt Królewski, od Starego Miasta do Wilanowa.
Previous urban perception studies were conducted at low spatial resolution, most often by select administrative units or based on map of the whole city and then interpret the cartographic skills of the respondents. In this paper we present a research approach where coherent, research-based areas covering the whole city were separated. Perception was defined in random representative places. As a result, the functional-spatial structure of a place is a significant part of perception, the different perception of the right and left bank of Warsaw is only a stereotype and the stimulating district in Warsaw is only Śródmieście. This suggests that the overall mental image of the city is based on the nature of city center. The research confirmed that green space and water are an essential element of residence, work and leisure and The Royal Route, from the Old Town to Wilanów, is best appreciated for over 35 years.
