Opis:
Saffron, made from the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L., contains pigments and valuable aromatic compounds, and can be used in medicine and as a spice. Nowadays its production is lower than demand. Tissue culture presents an alternative biochemical tool which can be used to produce stigma-like structure (SLS) in vitro. In this study, the origin and induction of SLS formation was investigated in ovary and style explants of floral buds on MS medium supplemented with 1-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzlaminopurine (BAP). SLS were directly originated through meristematic cells or indirectly in the form of colorless globular structures from parenchyma tissue. The colorless globular structures initially were conical and pale yellow color at the sharp ends; subsequently they matured into trumpet-like red stigmas with or without finger-like papillae at the margins. Light and electron microscopic observations of ultra- and semithin sections of different developmental stages of SLS showed that these structures possess two kinds of cells: (1) small cells close to parenchyma tissues and (2) large cells oriented towards the peripheral area and apparently originated from the small ones. Our results suggest that the SLS originated from internal parenchyma tissues.

Opis:
The present study was done to evaluate the effect of boldenone undecylenate (BOL) on growth performance, maintenance behaviour, reproductive hormones and carcass traits of male rabbits. Sixty apparently healthy New Zealand White male rabbits, 5 weeks of age, were allotted to 3 equal groups. Each group was subdivided into 5 replicates, where the first group is control. The second group (B1) comprised rabbits that received 2 intramuscular injections of BOL (5 mg/kg) with 3 week intervals (9 and 12 weeks of age), while the third group (B2) included rabbits that received 3 intramuscular injections of BOL (5 mg/kg) with 2 week intervals (8, 10 and 12 weeks of age). The end of the trial was after 4 weeks from the last injection (16 weeks of age). The results revealed that the treated groups had a significant increase in total body weight, daily gain and feed efficiency, with a significant decrease in feed conversion ratio (FCR). Ingestive, locomotion and grooming behaviors were significantly higher in treated groups. Lateral pasture and exploratory behaviors were significantly higher in the control group. Administration of BOL resulted in a significant increase in dressing % and a significant decrease in testes %. Groups treated with BOL had a significantly (P<0.05) decreased serum testosterone level, simultaneously with a significantly increased estradiol level. The results indicate that BOL improves performance and carcass traits. Furthermore, there are hormonal-behavioral correlations through enhancement of ingestive and locomotion behaviors of treated animals.

Opis:
In the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in environmentally friendly sustainable agricultural practices, thus increasing the role of biofertilizers such as rhizobia, which can decrease the need for chemical fertilizers, reduce adverse environmental effects, and help to save money. Therefore, information on the distribution and genetic variation of native rhizobial isolates would aid in selecting novel rhizobial strains that could be developed and used as biofertilizers in legume production. This research was conducted to characterize 24 rhizobial isolates from five legumes on morphological, biochemical, and molecular aspects and determine the phylogenetic relationships among them. Rhizobial isolates were obtained from five Egyptian legumes: faba bean, lentil, pea, clover, and soybean. Morphological characterization classified the isolates into fast and slow growers. Biochemical characterization using API 20E and API 20NE systems showed a large diversity, which may reflect their adaptation in different environments. Moreover, molecular detection of the 16S rRNA gene enabled to characterize 19 of them to the species level. Rhizobial isolates from pea, faba bean, clover, and lentil were identified as Rhizobium leguminosarum and those from soybean were identified as Bradyrhizobium japonicum. These data reflected a narrow diversity of rhizobial species in Egypt. A phylogenetic analysis of the 19 isolates confirmed that B. japonicum isolates were divergent from all other isolates. Furthermore, the phylogram revealed that each group of isolates that originated from the root nodule of a certain legume formed a separate subcluster. The obtained data suggested a narrow range of interspecies variations, which is consistent with the idea of the presence of biovars among the species.

Opis:
Eragrostis tenuifolia is a weed species that is gaining ground in Brazil. This weed occurs in pastures, grasslands, crop fields, and roadsides. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of different environmental factors on E. tenuifolia seed germination and seedling emergence. The optimum constant temperature for germination was around 35–30°C. It was also found that 85% of seeds germinated under a 30/20°C alternate temperature regime. Light appears to have a positive effect on seed germination. No seedlings emerged when seeds were buried 3 cm or deeper. The results suggested that E. tenuifolia has the potential to spread into pastures and in no-tillage crop systems in Brazil. Measures such as the use of cover crops and/or soil cultivation can be used to limit germination and seedling emergence, respectively.

Opis:
A greenhouse assay was carried out to evaluate the effect of winter cover crop residues on spontaneous plants that commonly occur on summer annual fields in Southern Brazil. Dry shoot residues of rye (Secale cereale), vetch (Vicia villosa), fodder radish (Raphanus sativus), and a mix of the three species, were applied over pots that had been seeded with alexandergrass (Brachiaria plantaginea), hairy beggarticks (Bidens pilosa), wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla), and morning glory (Ipomoea grandifolia) at four different depths (0, 1, 2, or 4 cm). Plant emergence and biomass production were measured. Residues of rye reduced the emergence of B. plantaginea, while vetch diminished I. grandifolia and B. plantaginea emergence. Fodder radish reduced emergence of I. grandifolia. The mix of cover crops reduced emergence of I. grandifolia, B. plantaginea, and B. pilosa. None of the cover crops differed from the control on E. heterophylla emergence. The lowest yields in spontaneous plant shoot biomass were obtained from the cover with rye + vetch + fodder radish. The lowest values of root biomass occurred under cover with rye, fodder radish or the mix. Use of vetch residues decreased emergence of B. plantaginea and I. grandifolia, but enhanced biomass accumulation by the latter.

Opis:
A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the preinoculation of reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis for inducing resistance against Meloidogyne incognita in potato plants. Potato plants were inoculated with reniform nematode three days before the same plants received a root knot nematode inoculation. There was a reduction in the population parameters of the root knot nematode compared to plants given only a single inoculation. The studied potato plants which had two inoculations, also had enhanced growth parameters. The activity of the enzymes; peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and chitinase increased in the inoculated plants compared to the non-inoculated control.
