At the beginning of the 17th century the capital of Poland was moved from Kraków to Warsaw causing the former capital of the Kingdom of Poland to fall into ruin. At the end of the 18th century Kraków, a small town of approximately 11 000 people, was in a severely deteriorated state. The author of the paper recalls the history of activities undertaken by so-called “burzymurkowie” (demolition men, literally “wall-destroyers”) who at the turn of the 18th century took charge of the process of demolishing the walls of the City of Kraków and who devastated many historic temples and secular buildings. However, in the first years of the 19th century, such defenders of historic monuments as Feliks Radwański and Florian Straszewski started to act in Kraków. Their contribution was to save the remaining walls of the town and many of its historic edifices. Very soon a host of other “old Kraków” lovers joined the aforementioned group. In the second part of the 19th century defenders of the monuments began to be active in a number of organizations. At the beginning of the 20th century these  organizations, as well as some cultural and artistic associations, entered into “The Union of Eleven Cultural Associations” which became spectacularly successful, for example saving the ‘Pod Krzysztofory’ Palace and two historic houses near the Saint Giles church. In this way the organization, which was concerned with the protection of city heirlooms, was created in Kraków before World War I. The organization was unique in Europe at the time, bringing together scholars, artists, and publicists.

Architektura XIX wieku była odzwierciedleniem epoki mistycyzmu, a zarazem sekularyzacji sztuki, dążenia do ideału jedności sztuk, a jednocześnie relatywizmu i indywidualizmu. Wyrosła na podłożu romantyzmu, może być ona postrzegana, jako wypadkowa postawy duchowej, światopoglądu i ruchu naukowego określanego mianem historyzmu. Rozwój historii sztuki i fascynacja przeszłością, wraz z bogactwem i różnorodnością stylów wpływały na polifonię ówczesnej architektury, w przestrzeni której istniał przede wszystkim historyzm, a także eklektyzm. Architekci historyzmu tworzyli dzieła inspirowane jednym stylem. Eklektyzm posiłkuje się stylami historycznymi w ówczesnym pojęciu romantycznymi, mieszając ich formy i motywy w jednej budowli. Wątki znaczeniowe architektury XIX wieku wiążą się z symboliką i wartościami niesionymi przez style minionych epok, reinterpretując ich formy i znaczenia.
The architecture of the 19th century was a reflection of both the era of mysticism and the era of secularization in art. It was a pursuit of the ideal of unity of the arts, and at the same time of relativity and individualism. Grounded in Romanticism, it might be seen as a product of a certain spiritual attitude, world view and scientific movement called historicism. Development of the history of art, a fascination with the past, together with the richness and diversity of styles, influenced the polyphony of the architecture of the time, in which historicism, and then eclecticism took precedence. Architects of historicism were creating works inspired by a single style. Eclecticism used historic styles perceived as romantic at the time, mixing their forms and motives in a single building. In 19th century architecture, threads of significance are interwoven with symbolism and values represented by the styles of previous historic periods, reinterpreting their forms and meanings.

At the beginning of the 19th century in the Upper Silesia there was no museum yet. Higher secondary schools were the most appropriate public places to deposit the relics of material culture, including Roman coins; lecturers would have used coins as aids in their work with students. This article discussed the collections of Roman coins in three secondary higher schools in Upper Silesia: in Cieszyn (Teschen), Glubczyce (Leobschutz) and Raciborz (Ratibor).

This article takes a look at the development women’s press in the first half of the 19th century. A comparison of the press market in the Romantic Age in France, Poland and the United States shows that usually women were eager to take up journalism as a sideline to their literary careers. The article discusses the journalistic work of three women writers — Delphine de Girardin, Wanda Malecka and Margaret Fuller. While each of them was inspired by Romantic and Preromantic writers, their journalism was for the most part a continuation of the Enlightenment models of journalism.
Artykuł ma na celu omówienie rozwoju prasy kobiecej, tworzonej w pierwszej połowie XIX wieku. Komparatystyczne badania pozwalają zauważyć, że w epoce romantyzmu we Francji, w Polsce oraz w Stanach Zjednoczonych kobiety chętnie włączały się w pracę redakcyjną, łącząc ją najczęściej z działalnością literacką. W szkicu omówiona została działalność publicystyczna trzech autorek: Delphine de Girardin, Wandy Maleckiej oraz Margaret Fuller. Nakreślone badania wykazały, że choć dziennikarki chętnie drukowały prace romantycznych i preromantycznych twórców, w swej publicystyce często czerpały jeszcze z oświeceniowych wzorców.

Although formulaic expressions found in earlier correspondence have drawn scholarly attention, their (un)grammaticality has not been thoroughly researched. The present paper thus focuses on the two types of formulae with the verb remain found in private correspondence: one headed by 1st person pronoun (as in: we remain(s) your daughters), the other one starting with but/so/also/and/only (as in: but remain(s) your affectionate child until death). For the purpose of the study a corpus of 19th-century correspondence has been compiled and analyzed; additionally, the data from Dylewski (2013) have been taken into account. Next to the corpus scrutiny, an Internet search has been carried out to verify whether the use of the formulae at issue goes beyond the 19th century. An analysis from both a qualitative and quantitative angles allowed for putting forth a number of hypotheses concerning the origin of variation between -s-marked and unmarked forms as well as their distribution across letter-types and different geographical locations. The results of the analysis also corroborate the claim that -s on remain in the structures under discussion is neither a “part of the authentic local vernacular nor of authentic contemporary standard English, but part of a specific, localized practice of letter writing, which had its own linguistic rules” (Pietsch 2015: 226).

The Portfolio; or a Collection of State Papers,etc. Illustrative of the History of our Times was a joint publishing venture of Polish émigrés gathered round Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski and his British sympathizers led by David Urquhart. Its core content were classified Russian diplomatic documents seized by Polish insurgents during the November 1830 Rising. Published as a series of volumes in 1835–1837 and 1843–1844 (New Series), The Portfolio principal aim was to discredit Russia; and more practically to rally the European public opinion to contain Russia’s advance in the East and to support the cause of Poland’s independence.

Opis:
Polish musical criticism of 19th century is a fascinating research field for musicologists, music theorists, as well as literary scholars. They can find there a wealth of texts whose expressive style tries to emulate the homage paid to the great virtuosos of the time in poetry. While Frederick Chopin and the violinist Karol Lipiński held sway over captive audiences, there was yet another musician whose name featured prominently in reviews and poems. It was Stanisław Szczepanowski, the great guitarist, whose concerts gave rise to numerous reviews representing the romantic school of musical criticism. This paper examines some of those reviews as well as two poems dedicated to Szczepanowski, one by Teofil Lenartowicz and the other by Władysław Syrokomla.

The Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery was established in 1792 in the village of Wielka Wola near Warsaw on Młynarska Street. It was probably designed by the architect Szymon Bogumił Zug. From the mid-19th century the cemetery aroused much admiration for its appearance. The site was carefully maintained and covered with lush vegetation. It contained many fine tombstones executed by the most outstanding sculptors from Warsaw. Among those was Paweł Maliński, Professor of the Sculpture Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Warsaw and his pupil Jakub Tatarkiewicz. Both studied under Bertel Thorvaldsen in Rome. Another talented sculptor whose works could be found in the cemetery was Konstanty Hegel, a former pupil of the Academy of St. Luke and the French Academy in Rome. The necropolis also contained funeral monuments made by the stone-carving workshops of Warsaw. This article aims to introduce about 30 of the most interesting funeral monuments executed in the first 60 years of the history of the Warsaw cemetery. The oldest tombstones preserved in the churchyard are eclectic works drawing from Baroque art. An interesting tombstone is that of Anna Regina Kilemann (d. 1793), modelled on Johann Augustus Nahl’s funeral monument for Mary Magdalene Langhans, and dated 1753. The cenotaphs in this group show some elements traditionally used in the early modern sepulchral sculpture – the carved figure of the deceased; the shape of the sarcophagus; the motif of the gate; or the obelisk on a pedestal. The types of tombstones widely used in the Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery in Warsaw show a mourner (a weeper), a genius angel or an allegorical figure holding an upside-down burning torch. One of the finest is the headstone executed for Krystian Gotthilf Helbing’s grave (d. 1845), decorated with the sculpted personification of Death executed by Paweł Maliński. Konstanty Hegel, on the other hand, displays the sculpted personification of the Evangelical community on the gravestone of Samuel Leopold Neumann (d. 1844), shown there as a Mourner. Whereas Jakub Tatarkiewicz made several sculpted busts for family mausoleums, including that of the lexicographer Samuel Linde (d. 1847), and the physicians Wilhelm Malcz (d. 1852) and Karol Henryk Kühnel (d. 1836). In addition to the classicist gravestones inspired by Greek and Roman antiquity, there are also neo-Gothic monuments and those inspired by ancient Egypt in the cemetery, for instance the pyramid-shaped tomb commemorating Jan Riedel (d. 1808). Moreover, there are many burial chapels (mausoleums) on Młynarska Street, and four of these deserve a special mention. The first one is the monumental Halpert Chapel dated 1834, representing templum in antis in the Doric order of the Roman variety. The second one is the Skwarcov Chapel dated 1851, distinguished by its oriental decoration in the Old Russian-Arabic style. The third one is a cast-iron openwork mausoleum of the Braeunig family (1821), considered one of the most elegant mausoleums in the cemetery, probably from Germany. Another chapel worth mentioning is the Dückert mausoleum (1828), a Polish example of the Greek Revival style. The funeral monuments in the Evangelical-Augsburg Cemetery in Warsaw commemorate well-known scholars, doctors, military people, merchants, bankers, industrialists, and owners of important real estates. Many of these people were deserving figures not only in the borough, but in the whole of Warsaw. Their place of burial in the Evangelical-Augsburg cemetery can be seen as an important point on the map of the city. It testifies to the multiculturalism of the capital of Poland and the Lutheran inhabitants, and is a gallery of sculpture reflecting all the styles and trends in art.

This article examines the graphic layout of nineteen Polish popular science magazines that were published in Warsaw, Puławy, Poznań, Leszno, Lwów, Cracow and Tarnów. After identifying the most popular themes of the visual material and the authors of most of the pictures and drawings, the article considers the importance of graphics in popular science magazines.

This article examines the occasional verse published by the daily Czas [Time] in 1864–1879, i.e. over a decade and a half after the suppression of the January Rising. These texts, which feature both solemn occasions and local ephemera, present us with a unique chronicle of life of Cracow and its environs. In addition to listing all the relevant texts, the article attempts to identify their authors, i.e. unlock their initials or pseudonyms, to outline the conventions and genological peculiarities of that verse, and to gauge the attitudes of the Cracovians towards the question of Poland’s independence, Romanticism, patriotism as well as some well-known authority figures.
W artykule zaprezentowano okazjonalne teksty, publikowane w latach 1864–1879 na łamach dziennika „Czas”. Odsłaniają one specyfikę utrwalania codzienności Krakowa i okolic zarówno w perspektywie uroczystych celebracji, jak i społecznościowych marginaliów. Sporządzono wykaz tych tekstów, ustalono ich autorów, dokonano deszyfracji pseudonimów, wskazano konwencje i osobliwości genologiczne, a także podjęto próbę nakreślenia stosunku krakowian do kwestii niepodległościowych, romantyzmu i patriotyzmu oraz uznanych autorytetów.
