Opis:
The author writes about Professor Stefan Żółkiewski’s theoretical concepts and three decades of scholarship, beginning with the 1960s and including lectures at the University of Warsaw’s Department of Polish Philology, directing work in the Department of Social Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, initiating interdisciplinary studies of contemporary culture, editing journal ‘Kultura i Społeczeństwo’, and popularizing semiotics. The author writes about Professor Żółkiewski’s connection with the Institute of Literary Research, of which he was the founder and first director, and about the establishment of the Workshop on Research into Literary Culture and the creation of a new discipline—knowledge of literary culture. The author remembers Professor Żółkiewski as her mentor and friend.

Opis:
The following paper concerns the topic of cross-cultural transition of Third Culture Kids and its determinants: personality, attachment style and religiosity. Third Culture Kids are understood in accordance with David Pollock and Van Reken as those who at least part of their childhood spent abroad. The results of the conducted research suggest that personality, measured by the Rorschach Inkblot Test, strongly determines emotional, cognitive and behavioral aspects of the process. Factors such as: anxiety and lack of emotional stability seem to be of great importance. Moreover, during cross-cultural transition the attachment style, developed in relations with parents or other attachment figures, strongly determines the building of relationships abroad. High distress, part and parcel of the process, brings out dysfunctional character of attachment style. Other typical traces mentioned in monograph devoted to Third Culture Kids by Pollock and Van Reken, as: problems with decision making and identity, lacking sense of belonging, unresolved grief, were also evidenced in my research. Religion and spirituality might be used as a coping strategy during cross-cultural transition. However, it seems very often not to be perceived as such or neglected by interviewees in the research.

Opis:
Saffron, made from the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L., contains pigments and valuable aromatic compounds, and can be used in medicine and as a spice. Nowadays its production is lower than demand. Tissue culture presents an alternative biochemical tool which can be used to produce stigma-like structure (SLS) in vitro. In this study, the origin and induction of SLS formation was investigated in ovary and style explants of floral buds on MS medium supplemented with 1-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzlaminopurine (BAP). SLS were directly originated through meristematic cells or indirectly in the form of colorless globular structures from parenchyma tissue. The colorless globular structures initially were conical and pale yellow color at the sharp ends; subsequently they matured into trumpet-like red stigmas with or without finger-like papillae at the margins. Light and electron microscopic observations of ultra- and semithin sections of different developmental stages of SLS showed that these structures possess two kinds of cells: (1) small cells close to parenchyma tissues and (2) large cells oriented towards the peripheral area and apparently originated from the small ones. Our results suggest that the SLS originated from internal parenchyma tissues.

Opis:
One of the key issues in contemporary urban studies is to consider the city from the perspective of culture and consumption, which are treated as new drivers of urban development and economic prosperity, the essence of urban ways of life, and arenas for the implementation of urban policies. In a consumer society, cities become important nodes where collective and individual consumption takes place on a massive scale. The urban system organizes capabilities and provides the resources for consumption, thus facilitating various kinds of lifestyles. As a result, the urban space operates as an arena of competition, where different consumer orientations and social categories strive physically and symbolically to occupy ground, produce meanings, and create belonging in the spaces and places that constitute the city. In applying Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of a “social field,” the aim of the article is to show how the space of social positions corresponds to the space of cultural practices. Drawing on the study of cultural and leisure activities in Wrocław, four general categories of urban residents are revealed and characterized by their distinct positions in different dimensions of the social space. The analysis also points to social capital (social networks) as an efficient new principle of cultural differentiation. The paper closes with the author’s concluding remarks and guidelines for further research.
