We present an efficient algorithm for recognizing and extracting sharp-features from complex polygonal shapes. The algorithm executes in O(n²) time, where n is the number of vertices in the polygon. Sharp-feature extraction algorithms can be useful as a pre-processing step for measuring shape-similarity between polygonal shapes.

Opis:
In this paper a scheme of utilizing shape independent basis functions for the hierarchical multiresolution image compression is shown. For a given image texture region segmentation method is used. Following polygonal approximation of created segments causes a degradation of their boundaries. Using NURBS and Bezier interpolation and approximation segments' boundaries are created, thus achieving an image mask. As an input of the three-level hierarchical encoder this image mask and image are used. The image mask and image are subsampled by a factor of 2 on each level. The hierarchical encoder encodes them shape independently. Especially for a very low bit rate image coding gives better results for objective criteria (PSNR). For segment approximation the 2D shape independent orthogonal transform (DCT II) is used. Splines encoding and decoding is very efficient, because only their control points need to be stored. The segment is coded with a modified code similar to the JPEG code.

This paper presents a piecewise line generalization algorithm (PG) based on shape characteristic analysis. An adaptive threshold algorithm is used to detect all corners, from which key points are selected. The line is divided into some segments by the key points and generalized piecewise with the Li-Openshaw algorithm. To analyze the performance, line features with different complexity are used. The experimental results compared with the DP algorithm and the Li-Openshaw algorithm show that the PG has better performance in keeping the shape characteristic with higher position accuracy.

This paper proposes a description of the reinforcement phase shape in MMCs by means of a decision, or classification tree analysis, recognized as a basic data mining technique. The material under examination was composed of reinforcement particles (SiC) in suspension composites with silumin matrix, made by mechanical stirring method. The use of decision tree method allowed to determine logic rules for the classification of particles to the category circle on the basis of its diameter and surface area, taking into account the division into three samples (depending on the location of the analyzed area in the casting space) and a reference sample (representative analysis area – of most desired shape in terms of composite quality - generated by simulation). To assess the accuracy of classification we used a redistribution indicator, that can be a measure used in describing the feature: homogeneity of reinforcement phase particle shape in the space of composite casting.

Opis:
In the present study, the corrosion behaviors of amorphous-nanocrystalline Ni50Ti50 shape memory alloy with different crystallite sizes were investigated. The Ni50Ti50 homogenized specimens were hot rolled and annealed at 950°C. Thereafter, the nanocrystalline Ni50Ti50 specimens with different crystalline sizes in the range of 40-350 nm were prepared by cold rolling and annealing at temperature range of 400 to 900°C. The corrosion resistance of Ni50Ti50 specimen with coarse grain size has significantly increased after cold rolling as a result of the formation of amorphous-nanocrystalline structure. The amorphous and nanocrystalline (with the crystallite size of about 40 nm) Ni50Ti50 samples exhibited the best corrosion resistance in the 5% HCl electrolyte with the corrosion potential and corrosion current density of about –197 mV and 2.34×10-6 A/cm2, respectively. This effect can be attributed to the higher density of crystalline defects in amorphous and nanocrystalline structures to quickly form protective films on the surface.

Opis:
In the paper an analysis of the influence of two parameters on the die wear, i.e. the shape of the die and the backpull with the specified force values has been presented. The conical and curve-profile tools have been selected to determine an influence of the die geometry on its wear, and the backpull force has been tested with the use of conical dies. The research was conducted for the drawing of copper wire by sintered carbide die with a mesh diameter of 3 mm. A fixed draw value of 30% relative gap loss was assumed. The axisymmetric numerical model of the drawing process was built and modeled in the MARC/Mentat commercial program for nonlinear and contact issues. As a result of the tests, wear of the dies according to their shape was determined. In addition, for the conical die the drawing force and the force of the metal pressure on the die using different values of the force of the contraction were calculated, as well as wear of the conical die according to the value of the applied backpull force. It has been shown that in the case of the arc die, the distribution of pressure and stress is more uniform over the entire length of the contact zone compared to the conical die. The highest stress gradients occurred in the area of the transition of the crushing part into the drawing part of the die, which caused that the use of the conical die in this area was more than twice as large as the arc die. In addition, on the example of a conical die, it was shown to what extent the depth of its wear decreases with an increase of the test pull force in the range (0-400) of Newtons.

Opis:
An approach to rapid optimization of antennas using the shape-preserving response-prediction (SPRP) technique and coarsediscretization electromagnetic (EM) simulations (as a low-fidelity model) is presented. SPRP allows us to estimate the response of the high-fidelity EM antenna model, e.g., its reflection coefficient versus frequency, using the properly selected set of so-called characteristic points of the low-fidelity model response. The low-fidelity model, corrected by means of SPRP, is subsequently used to predict the optimal design. The design process is cost efficient because most operations are performed on the low-fidelity model. Performance of our technique is demonstrated using a dielectric resonator antenna and two planar wideband antenna examples. In all cases, the optimal design is obtained at a cost corresponding to a few high-fidelity simulations of the antenna under design.

Non-toxic Ti-Nb-Mo scaffolds were fabricated by sintering rapidly solidified alloy fibers for biomedical applications. Microstructure and martensitic transformation behaviors of the porous scaffolds were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetric and X-ray diffraction. The α″ – β transformation occurs in the as-solidified fiber and the sintered scaffolds. According to the compressive test of the sintered scaffolds with 75% porosity, they exhibit good superelasticity and strain recovery ascribed to the stress-induced martensitic transformation and the shape memory effect. Because of the high porosity of the scaffolds, an elastic modulus of 1.4 GPa, which matches well with that of cancellous bone, could be obtained. The austenite transformation finishing temperature of 77Ti-18Nb-5Mo alloy scaffolds is 5.1°C which is well below the human body temperature, and then all mechanical properties and shape memory effect of the porous 77Ti-18Nb-5Mo scaffolds are applicable for bon replacement implants.

An optical tomograph in which a tested object is illuminated from five directions has been presented in the paper. The measurements of luminous intensity after changing into discrete signals (0 or 1) in the detectors equipped with 64 optical sensors were subjected to reconstruction by means of the matrix algorithm. Detailed description of the measuring sensor, as well as the principles of operation of the electronic system, has been given in the paper. Optical phenomena occurring at the phase boundary while transmitted through the sensor wall and phenomena inside the measuring space have also been taken into account. The method of the sensor calibration has been analysed and a way of technical solution of the problem under consideration has been discussed. The elaborated method has been tested using objects of the known shape and dimensions. It was found that reconstruction of the shapes of moving bubbles and determination of their main parameters is also possible with a reasonable accuracy.

Opis:
Similarity assessment between 3D models is an important problem in many fields including medicine, biology and industry. As there is no direct method to compare 3D geometries, different model representations (shape signatures) are developed to enable shape description, indexing and clustering. Even though some of those descriptors proved to achieve high classification precision, their application is often limited. In this work, a different approach to similarity assessment of 3D CAD models was presented. Instead of focusing on one specific shape signature, 45 easy-to-extract shape signatures were considered simultaneously. The vector of those features constituted an input for 3 machine learning algorithms: the random forest classifier, the support vector classifier and the fully connected neural network. The usefulness of the proposed approach was evaluated with a dataset consisting of over 1600 CAD models belonging to 9 separate classes. Different values of hyperparameters, as well as neural network configurations, were considered. Retrieval accuracy exceeding 99% was achieved on the test dataset.

Opis:
Salt caverns are used for over 70 years to store power sources and dispose of industrial wastes. The design of cavern shape and dimensions is still considered as a difficult engineering problem despite progress in geotechnical, construction and exploration methods. The rational design of cavern depends on mechanical parameters of rock salt and nonsalt rocks, stability conditions, safety requirements and stored material. However, most of these factors are related to geological factors like depth of cavern location, the geological structure of salt deposit, lithology of interlayers, petrology and mineralogy of rock salt and interlayers. The significant diversity in the geological conditions of different rock salt deposits contributed to the variety in shape and dimensions of salt caverns worldwide. In this paper, the examples of caverns developed in various salt deposits are presented. The shape of these caverns and its relation to geological features is presented. The influence of geological factors on the formation of irregularities in a cavern shape is described. Moreover, the evaluation of storage caverns located in Polish salt deposits in a view of the aforementioned geological factors is performed. The information and analysis described in this paper provide input which can be useful in future plans connected with the development of underground storage in Poland.

Opis:
FeMnSiCrNi alloys represent a promising class of FeMnSi-based shape memory alloys (SMAs) characterized by excellent characteristics of formability and corrosion resistance. The present paper is focused on a 68Fe-18Mn-3Si-7Cr-4Ni (mass. %) SMA, produced by powder metallurgy routine, which was tested to creep, using a dual cantilever specimen holder, and analyzed by means of the dedicated software of a dynamic mechanical analyzer. The specimens were tested at five temperatures by applying, at each of them, four bending force values, during 2000 s. The variation of bending creep deflection with time, temperature and force was discussed both from the point of instant value and 1000 s-value. These results enabled plotting a space diagram of stabilized creep rate variation with both applied force and test temperature. In such context, a theoretical model in a multifractal paradigm of motion was built, considering that FeMnSiCrNi shape memory alloy can be assimilated, both structurally and functionally, with a multifractal object. Finally, this model was validated by means of experimental data.
