Opis:
The paper is semitutorial in nature to make it accessible to readers from a broad range of disciplines. Our particular focus is on cataloging the known problems in nanomechanics as eigenproblems. Physical insights obtained from both analytical results and numerical simulations of various researchers (including our own) are also discussed. The paper is organized in two broad sections. In the second section the attention is focused on the analysis of quantum dots. The analysis of electronic properties of strained semiconductor structures is reduced here to the solution of a linear boundary value problem (the classical Helmholtz wave equation). In Sec 3, we provide, intermixed with a literature review, details on various methods and issues in calculation free vibrations/loss of stability for carbon nanotubes. The effect of various parameters associated with the material anisotropy are addressed. Typically classical continuum mechanics, which is intrinsically size independent, is employed for calculations.

A TiO2/CdS coupled system was prepared by mixing the TiO2 P25 with CdS synthesized by means of the precipitation method. It was found that the specific surface area (SSA) of both components is extremely different and equals 49.5 for TiO2 and 145.4 m2·g-1 for CdS. The comparison of particle size distribution and images obtained by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed agglomeration of nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns suggest that CdS crystallizes in a mixture of cubic and hexagonal phases. Optical reflectance spectra revealed a gradual shift of the fundamental absorption edge towards longer wavelengths with increasing CdS molar fraction, which indicates an extension of the absorption spectrum of TiO2. The photocatalytic activity in UV and UV-vis was tested with the use of methyl orange (MO). The Langmuir–Hinshelwood model described well the photodegradation process of MO. The results showed that the photocatalytic behaviour of the TiO2/CdS mixture is significantly better than that of pure nanopowders.

Opis:
This article is based on an evaluation of the project “Entrance from the Courtyard,” which was conducted as part of the series of events connected with the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016. The aim was to mobilize local society through artistic activities. The authors consider the question of whether artistic activities, in association with an attempt at art education, could be an effective source of social activation. They also describe the conflicts resulting from tension between activation and education, and those elements of the activities that meant the beneficiaries of the project were not always the addressees of the activation. An evaluation has made it possible to show what types of artistic activities can favor overcoming difficulties, that is, what types can stimulate and maintain local social activeness. Creating a sense of agency is the way to the goal.

Opis:
Corrosion of water distribution system is a significant issue causing problems with quality, safety and continuity of distribution. The changes of corrosion rates of the water distribution systems in Cracow made of carbon steel were investigated by analysis of online corrosion monitoring system results. Corrosion rates were determined using the linear polarization method. The impactof rain, temperatures, conductivity, dissolved oxygen content on corrosion rate were characterized. The corrosivity of different water sources like mountain water, underground water or river water were indicated. The possible actions for reducing corrosion losses were characterized. Results show that pollution of the environment in the form of acid rain and runoff from agriculture as well as the type of the source water has significant influence on corrosion of water distribution system. Corrosion monitoring system gives possibility of controlling corrosion rate by mixing waters from different sources in the way to obtain less corrosive mixture. (see Fig 8).

Opis:
Our paper demonstrates the ability of Favre-averaged Navier–Stokes (FANS) turbulence models to predict the laminar-turbulent transition and shows the influence of the models on the wall temperature distribution. The investigations were based on conjugate heat transfer analyses of a convectively cooled C3X turbine vane, which were performed using commercial flow simulation software. We compared several eddy-viscosity models: shear stress transport (SST), γ-Reθ SSTtransition, v2-f, k-ε, realizable, k-kl-ω transition, and second-order closure ε-based Reynolds stress model (RSM) with a linear pressure-strain model. The turbulence length scale (TLS) was not measured during the experiment, so its influence on the location of the transition onset and wall temperature distribution is presented. We also examined the influence of the roughness of the airfoil wall on the location of turbulence initialization and the wall temperature distribution.
