    Delineating various characters in his Histories, Herodotus is influenced by his theories on national character. This is why he presents Cambyses as a cruel barbarian despot. Many of the king’s deeds result from anger which the historian tries to justify. Other crimes, such as cruel treatment of his family and friends, and profanation of Persian and foreign religious cults, Herodotus seems to treat as signs of madness. In this article, it is shown that some of these actions could have stemmed from cultural misunderstandings: the king did not know enough about foreign religions and customs.

    Opis:
    This article discusses crypto-portraits, in the broadest sense of the word, that show Polish elected kings in religious narrative painting of the 17th and 18th centuries. This phenomenon is introduced against the backdrop of the genesis of the autonomous portrait and sacred and secular themes in the frame of ceremonial church space. The type of portrait discussed belongs to the category of the identification portrait that is “hidden” or “disguised”, as analyzed by Ladner and G. F. Polleross. The author of this study has narrowed the subject area to Catholic sacred pictures, whilst extending the formula of the crypto-portrait sensu largo to the assisting portrait, very popular in provincial art of the Commonwealth until the second half of the 18th century. Crypto-portraits sensu stricte created likenesses involved in the action on the basis of co-heroes, whilst portraits in assistenza did not transform the identity of a ruler when adoring a holy protagonist(s) or assisting in an event consecrated by biblical or hagiographic tradition. An intermediate category of images showed a ruler-commentator of the scene, who addressed the viewer. The author also refers to the issue of pseudo-portraits in assistenza – pre-portraits, more “meaning” than “showing”, likenesses inscribed in the tradition of the medieval ideogram, subjected to various degrees of typification, and referring only to concrete appearances of Polish monarchs. This article reveals the existence of many unknown or unacknowledged portraits of Polish kings which refer to Miles Christianus, in accordance with convention, or which portray the monarchs in coronation robes adoring saints or Holy Persons.

    Opis:
    The foster care system implements social policy in the sphere of state welfare services for families in crisis. The aims of this article are to consider the issue of consent in regard to state interference in the sphere of the family and to appraise the functioning of the system of institutional aid and support for families in a situation that endangers the life or health of a child. The authors analyze society’s perception and reception of foster care. They present a quantitative and qualitative analysis of selected press articles published in the years 2010–2015, and then discuss the findings of a nationwide survey conducted in the first quarter of 2016. Participants in the survey answered questions concerning their familiarity with foster care issues and media communications on the subject, as well as about their possible direct contact with foster care.

    Contemporary biographical fictions in France: between narrative and visual – This paper discusses an evolution of point of view on biographical fictions from 90’ to the present, due to the important increase of literary practices exploring images and their role in the constitution of the biographical discourse. The relation between fiction and reality presented from the point of view of Paul Ricoeur’s ‘narrative identity’ in first approaches of biographical fictions is now substituted by the reflection about the relation between narrative and visual which discloses, particularly in the case of biographical portraits of writers, the commemorative aspects of a literary text.
    Współczesne fikcje biograficzne we Francji: między narracyjnością a wizualnością. Artykuł omawia zmianę podejścia w badaniach nad fikcjami biograficznymi, jaka dokonała się od lat 90. do współczesności. Związana jest ona z wzrastającym znaczeniem literackich praktyk odwołujących się do obrazu, głównie fotograficznego, i jego roli w konstytuowaniu biograficznego dyskursu. Relacja pomiędzy fikcją a rzeczywistością, we wcześniejszych badaniach fikcji biograficznych rozważana w perspektywie „narracyjnej tożsamości” Paula Ricœura, zastąpiona została refleksją nad relacją pomiędzy narracyjnością a wizualnością, która obejmuje również, w szczególności w przypadku biograficznych portretów pisarzy, upamiętniający aspekt tekstu literackiego.
