Opis:
Aviation is one of the fastest growing modes of transport. Due to the growing number of flights, the consumption of aviation fuels (mainly jet fuels) keeps increasing. The combustion process in the aircraft engine results in harmful exhaust emissions having an adverse impact on the environment. Alternative fuels based on bio-components and biofuels are a way of reducing the harmful exhaust emissions. Analyses and measurements performed on real aircraft engines are complex and expensive. For this reason, increasingly more research and development projects have been carried out on small-scale engines. This paper presents investigations into volatile organic compound emissions from jet fuel combustion in a miniature turbojet engine. Based on chromatography tests, the compositions of exhaust gases produced by the jet engine fed with various fuels were determined, which in turn led to evaluation of its toxicity and harmfulness. Conventional fossil-based fuel Jet A-1 and a blend of Jet A-1 with 25 vol. % of biobutanol were tested at the same fuel flow rates. The engine working parameters such as, e.g., thrust or emission index have been determined with respect to the type of fuel. The test results have been compared and analyzed.

Opis:
The presented work attempted to modify activated carbons with ultrasonic field and evaluate the efficiency of sorption of organic compounds on the obtained modified activated carbons. The results showed that the applied procedure had a positive effect on the removal of the investigated substance. In the case of removal of benzoic and phthalic acids, the highest sorption capacities were obtained for activated carbons modified with ultrasonic waves with the amplitude of 100% and the exposure time of 5 min. The removal efficiency for both acids was approximately 80% at the initial pH and 65% at pH = 8.0. Sorption of imidazole on modified activated carbons showed that lower final concentration was obtained for activated carbons modified with ultrasounds at the amplitude of 100%. The time of exposure to ultrasounds did not have a significant effect on reducing final concentrations. The average removal degree was approximately 45%. Sorption of phenol showed that the average degree of removal was approximately 80% for the solution of the initial pH whereas for higher pH the average removal degree was close to 65%.

Opis:
To methods of analysis of odor of volatile organic compounds have been compared: classical sensory analysis and electronic nose technique. Eight volunteers participated in two-week classical sensory tests. The instrumental odor analysis involved a prototype of 6-sensor electronic nose designed by the authors. This device provided higher reproducibility and reliability of the results as compared to the ones obtained via the sensory analysis. Three compounds of specific odor and differing in chemical structure were utilized in the studies: 1-propanol, benzaldehyde and 2,3-butanedione. Aqueous solutions of the compounds and their mixtures were prepared at three concentration levels: 50 ppb, 1 ppm, 50 ppm v/v. The electronic nose technique, unlike the classical sensory analysis, made it possible to differentiate between particular solutions below the level of odor perceptibility and also allowed differentiation between the solutions of similar odor intensity reported by the volunteers.

Opis:
The research was performed to evaluate usability of stabilization/ solidification (S/S) processes in permanent separation of the surface of soil contaminated with xylene in order to reduce its emission to the environment. For the needs of the experiment, soil samples were prepared with the same amounts of solvent and then, after averaging their physicochemical composition, stabilized with Portland cement CEM II 32,5 R. In the course of stabilization/solidification process, all emitted gaseous contaminants were monitored. The effect of a binder dose on xylene emission was evaluated based on the momentary concentrations (C8H10) monitored above the surface of reactive mixture using a flame-ionization detector. Simultaneously, contaminated air was run through pipes filled with activated carbon. Then, based on chromatographic analysis of xylene vapors adsorbed on activated carbon, the measured momentary concentrations were verified.

Opis:
Sonolysis and photodegradation of various compounds such as chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons are the recent advanced oxidation processes. Perchloroethylene PCE is one of these compounds mainly used as a solvent and degreaser. In this work, elimination of perchloroethylene in aqueous solution by ultrasonic irradiation and photooxidation by UVC were investigated. Head space gas chromatography with FID detector was used for analyses of PCE. Results showed that PCE could be effectively and rapidly degraded by ultrasonic irradiation, photooxidation by UVC and combination of these methods. The order of studied reactions for degradation PCE has been determined.

Opis:
Influence of composition of raw wastewater on the efficiency of organic matter and nitrogen removal in multistage treatment wetlands has been examined. Commonly used indicators, like COD/BOD5 and BOD5/TN ratio, determining wastewater susceptibility to biodegradation in conventional treatment technologies were assessed. It was confirmed that multistage treatment wetland may be used for treatment of wastewater with high loads of organic pollutants and unfavorable composition for a biological treatment expressed by the ratio of COD/BOD5 and BOD5/TN equal to 2.7 and 0.7, respectively.
