Opis:
Biofilters are a potential treatment option for removing pollutants from feedlot runoff but little research has been done on their use and design. In this study, two mechanism -based models were developed to simulate biofilter processes: a first-order model and a logistic model. The two models were calibrated and evaluated using nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) data collected from rainfall events for an experimental biofilter at Melrose, Minnesota, USA. The first-order model predicted removal efficiencies better than the logistic model. The sensitivity analysis suggested that the predictions of the first-order model are more sensitive to parameter. In addition, the uncertainty analysis suggested that the range in predictive errors could be a consequence of uncertainty of estimating parameter from the limited data set for the first-order model. In contrast, the uncertainty analysis for the logistic model of N suggested that reasons other than the uncertainty in parameter estimation are needed to explain predictive errors. Overall, the study provides a useful tool for assessing biofilter performance that can easily be improved with larger observed data sets. The biofilter model has been implemented in the most recent version of the Minnesota feedlot annualized runoff model (MinnFARM).

Opis:
Isobutanol in waste gas streams was treated by a tubular biofilter (TBF) which continuously operated for 364 days under various organic loading rate (OLR) from 11 g·m–3·h–1 to 66 g·m–3·h–1. Results show that within 60 days, the TBF successfully started up even after changing the OLR from 31.3 to 15.6 g·m–3·h–1. The average removal efficiencies (REs) were totally higher than 90% when OLRs ranged from 12.14 to 66.45 g·m–3·h–1. Two distinct performance deterioration periods were observed at days 186–253 and days 280–334, both of which recovered without additional measurement. During these periods, the larvae and adult moth flies, been identified as Psychodinae infested the TBF, greatly affected the TBF performance. When the number of adult Psychodinae decreased, TBF performance recovered. The elimination capacity (EC) was 60.42 g·m–3·h–1 at the inlet OLR of 66.45 g·m–3·h–1, with the critical EC being around 50 g·m–3·h–1. Even under a low gas empty bed residence time of 15 s, the preferable REs and ECs under middle or low OLRs were still obtained by the TBF.

Opis:
The study deals with the removal of residual contaminants Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from soil using surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, and Triton x-100. Surfactants were used with and without chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). SDS (10 mM) was the most effective surfactant for removing metals. Replacing distilled water with SDS enhanced metal removal by the factor of 5.5, 28.8, and 29.1 for Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II), respectively. SDS with EDTA was efficient in removing metals. Interaction of metal ions with respect to adsorption and desorption were also studied.
