Opis:
The paper presents two methods of digital mapping of rock walls in three dimensional space. The methods have been developed with the use of low-cost devices, which enable image acquisition, and processing methods based on digital image processing and analysis. Both methods are based on so-called shadow profilometry. One of those methods involved mapping the shape of the rock wall on casted mapped surface with analyzed laser lines. The second method was based on the analysis of projected set of bit planes. The planes were projected by computer projector. Both measurement methods have been tested in Miękinia porphyry quarry. The study involved rock wall measurements, which were repeated several times. The part of rock material was removed from the measured wall after each measurement. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed methods of measurement, volume results obtained and based on digital methods were compared to the volume of removed rock material during measurement. Calculated results were characterized by small deviations which prove to be correct, and are a solid basis for further work on practical application of presented methods.

Opis:
Digital processing of the optical image of a sessile droplet was used to study the influence of dodecanol vapors and condensate on the wettability of superhydrophobic coatings by water. Two types of coatings with very different morphologies were used to estimate the stability of the superhydrophobic state in the presence of dodecanol at different regimes of interaction of tested superhydrophobic coatings with dodecanol vapors, including preliminary condensation of dodecanol inside the substrate pores/grooves at different temperatures, a short-term contact of dodecanol vapor with the superhydrophobic coating with the preliminary deposited water droplets and, finally, a long-term contact between substrate with deposited water droplets and the vapor phase saturated with dodecanol vapor. The set of experimental data indicate only minor variations of water contact and roll-off angles for all regimes studied. Such wettability behavior evidences good persistence of superhydrophobic state in conditions of contact with long-chain alcohol vapors.

Opis:
The wettability of coal surfaces by water continues to be one of the key factors which determines the success of coal flotation. Consequently, oxidation of coal surfaces is a fundamental issue of interest. In this work, the effect of oxidation on the wetting of coal surfaces and the interaction between water molecules and oxygen-containing sites at the coal surface was investigated based on advancing/receding contact angle measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. For the simulation studies, a flat coal surface was constructed with the assistance of the molecular repulsion between graphite surfaces and the assembly of Wiser coal molecules. Our results indicated that the simulated advancing and receding contact angles were very similar, and both of them decreased, as expected, with an increase of hydroxyl sites at the coal surface. The good agreement between the simulated advancing/receding contact angles and the experimental receding contact angle values suggested that the configuration of the systems and the set of parameters for the simulation were appropriate. The spreading of water is mainly due to the hydrogen bonds formed between the interfacial water molecules and the hydroxyl sites at the coal surface. The hydroxyl groups show stronger hydration capacity than other oxygen-containing groups according to the calculated hydrogen bonds and interaction energies.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose is to present a mathematical model of the function of the thumb carpometacarpal joint (TCMCJ) based on measurements of human joints. In the TCMCJ both articulating surfaces are saddle-shaped. The aim was to geometrically survey the shapes of the articulating surfaces using precise replicas of 28 TCMCJs. Methods: None of these 56 articulating surfaces did mathematically extend the differential geometrical neighbourhood around the main saddle point so that each surface could be characterised by three main parameters: the two extreme radii of curvature in the main saddle point and the angle between the saddles’ asymptotics (straight lines). Results: The articulating surfaces, when contacting at the respective main saddle points, are incongruent. Hence, the TCMCJ has functionally five kinematical degrees of freedom (DOF); two DOF belong to flexion/extension, two to ab-/adduction. These four DOF are controlled by the muscular apparatus. The fifth DOF, axial rotation, cannot be adjusted but stabilized by the muscular apparatus so that physiologically under compressive load axial rotation does not exceed an angle of approximately ±3°. Conclusions: The TCMCJ can be stimulated by the muscular apparatus to circumduct. The mechanisms are traced back to the curvature incongruity of the saddle surfaces. Hence we mathematically proved that none of the individual saddle surfaces can be described by a quadratic saddle surface as is often assumed in literature. We derived an algebraic formula with which the articulating surfaces in the TCMCJ can be quantitatively described. This formula can be used to shape the articulating surfaces in physiologically equivalent TCMCJ-prostheses.

Opis:
The oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFG) on the coal surface affect the adsorption effect of hydrocarbon oily collectors (HOC). An investigation of the interaction between the HOC and OCFG in the absence and presence of water is conducive to understanding the effect of OCFG type on the adsorption of HOC on the coal surface. In this paper, FTIR analysis was used to analyze the OCFG type of coal surface. The adsorption behavior of HOC on different OCFG surfaces was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated the presence of OCFG such as -OH, -COOH, -C=O, and -COCH3 on the coal surface. In conditions without water, the effect of OCFG on HOC adsorption capability follows the order -COOH > -C=O > -OH > -COCH3. In an aqueous solution, the effect of OCFG on HOC adsorption capability follows the order -C=O>-COCH3>-OH>-COOH. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of OCFG is the key factor that affects the adsorption effect of HOC. In other words, the adsorption effect of HOC on the coal surface in an aqueous solution does not depend on the strength of the interaction between the OCFG and HOC in the absence of water, but on the hydrophilicity of the OCFG. The -COOH and -OH on the coal surface are not conducive to the adsorption of HOC onto the coal surface. Masking the -COOH and -OH of the coal surface is beneficial in improving the coal flotation performance with HOC as a collector.

Purpose: The topic of the presented paper concerns the diagnosis of the wear and diseases of human joint cartilage performed by the acoustic waves emission. The aim of this paper is the determining of the necessary parameters for the diagnosis about the wear and diseases of human joint cartilage. Material And Method: To the research methods used in this paper belong the evaluation of measurement results of the cartilage surface samples obtained by means of laser and mechanical sensor and acoustic emission wave might or voltage gained from the AE apparatus during the treatments performed for normal and pathological used and not used human knee and hip joints. Results: The results concern with the corollaries which are implied from reading values gained by virtue of the acoustic emission Apparatus, and from observations from cartilage surface pictures obtained from laser and mechanical sensors. The diagnose of concrete cartilage illness depends on the proper relative values of obtained strongest of generated AE wave as well as the shapes and amplitudes of acoustic waves and wave frequencies. Conclusions: The main conclusions obtained in this paper are as follows: connections between synovial fluid dynamic viscosity or friction forces and intensity of acoustic emission values, the determination of the type of lesions and deformations of the human joint cartilage surface by means of the shapes architecture of the acoustic emission waves. Moreover are indicated the necessary conditions for the diagnosis of the such dieses as: pathological cartilage with arthritic or osteoporosis or rheumatology changes.

Opis:
The article reviews the standards and literature describing the issue of determining dynamic loads acting on crane caused by travelling on uneven surfaces, the knowledge of which is essential for proper dimensioning of the supporting structures of cranes, in particular cranes for working at high movement speeds. It presents the factors significantly affecting the value of these dynamic loads. The article also demonstrates selected dynamic models of cranes and methodology of their building. Presented are the similarities and differences in the modeling of dynamic loads. Calculated values of the dynamic coefficients as well as discussion of the results are presented.
