Opis:
It is not well established how motion and muscle activation of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) of the foot vary under different loading conditions. Intrinsic and extrinsic foot muscles may play a role in postural control, which may be investigated by comparing loading tasks with differing postural demands. The objective of this study was to investigate the interaction of MLA flexibility and loading task on muscle activation. Methods: Twenty healthy adults completed two instrumented single-foot loading tasks: controlled external load of 50% body weight while sitting and bilateral standing. Fine-wire intramuscular and surface electromyography collected flexor hallucis brevis, abductor hallucis, tibialis posterior, flexor hallucis longus, tibialis anterior, and peroneus longus activation. MLA deformation was measured as a percent change in navicular height with loading. Results: During seated external loading, greater MLA deformation was associated with greater muscle activation for all instrumented muscles (R2 = 0.224–0.303, p < 0.05) except for tibialis anterior. During bilateral stance, there were no correlations between MLA deformation and muscle activation. Activation of all extrinsic muscles except for tibialis anterior were greater during bilateral standing than during external loading ( p = 0.002–0.013), indicating activation of these muscles was caused by postural demands of the standing task, not simply load. Conclusions: MLA deformation and muscle activation are strongly task-dependent.

Opis:
The endoprostheses made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloys belong to the group of the most popular metallic implants used for hip joints reconstruction. For such biomaterials, the primary goal is correct and long-term functioning in the aggressive environment of body fluids. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine both the morphology and the corrosion resistance of implants made of the cobalt alloy used in Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) system (Smith & Nephew). For comparative purposes, the electrochemical studies were done for the nitrided stainless steel – Orthinox. Methods: Observations of the microstructure of the investigated material were performed by means of the optical metallographic microscope and the scanning electron microscope. Furthermore, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy was used to analyse the chemical composition of the endoprosthesis. Characterisation and evaluation of electrochemical corrosion resistance of the selected alloys were performed by potentiodynamic polarisation tests. Results: The structural studies confirmed that Co-Cr-Mo (BHR system) is characterised by a typical dendritic microstructure with carbide precipitates, mainly M23C6, within the interdendritic areas. Results of the polarisation measurements showed that the investigated cobalt alloy exhibits lower corrosion potential than Orthinox in the utilised environments (3% NaCl, simulated body fluid – Hank’s Body Fluid). Conclusions: However, the high passivation ability of the Co-Cr-Mo alloy, as well as its resistance to the initiation and propagation of localised corrosion processes, indicate that this material is significantly more appropriate for long-term implants.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to compare the distribution of foot plantar pressure between normal and obese adult subjects during walking. Methods: Sixty male and female adult volunteers (aged 20–40) were recruited into the study. They were equally divided into 30 normal subjects (BMI = 18.5–22.9 kg/cm2 ) into group I and 30 obese subjects (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/cm2 ) into group II, according to their BMI. Results: There were statistically significant differences between normal and obese subjects in foot length, width, and pressure distribution in the hindfoot, midfoot, forefoot, and toes. There was a statistically significant increase in the plantar pressure of all measured areas in obese persons in comparison with the normal subjects. In addition, all measures of foot pressure showed statistically significant differences between the same sex of both groups, while the obese subjects of both genders have higher foot pressure in all measured areas. High positive correlations were detected between BMI, peak pressure, foot contact, and foot width in both groups, but there was a weak positive correlation between normal BMI and foot contact area. Conclusion: The distribution of plantar foot pressure is different in adult obese subjects than in normal adult subjects during walking activity. The obese persons have larger foot length, width, higher peak pressure, and contact area. This study can help physical therapists to understand the differences of foot pressure between normal and obese subjects, and consequently, to detect any expected foot abnormalities accompanied by obesity.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the range of motion (ROM) of lumbar and thoracic articulations and static and dynamic plantar pressure in sport climbing athletes. Methods: The sample included 30 sport climbers with a minimum of 2 years training experience and 30 physical education students who served as an active untrained control. ROM was assessed by a Saunders digital inclinometer; plantar pressure by a baropodometric platform. Results: Mean spinal ROMs were greater in the sport climbers with the exception of extension, rotation, and lateral thoracic flexion, with a high degree of statistical significance obtained in the majority of the analyzed ROMs. The climbers exhibited increased mean forefoot pressure (smaller rearfoot pressure) in both the dominant and non-dominant extremities, with significant intergroup differences found in dominant forefoot/rearfoot pressure distribution. Conclusions: Sport climbers present increased lumbar and thoracic ROM, and the characteristics of climbing may also affect transverse arch structure and plantar pressure distribution.

The objective of this study was to compare the ground reaction forces (GRFs) and the multi-segment foot motion between individuals with plantar fasciitis (PF) and healthy controls. Methods: Twenty-one individuals with PF and 21 matched-case healthy controls who passed the criteria participated in the study. Gait data were assessed during their self-selected comfortable speeds by the 3D motion analysis system. The multi-segment foot motions were determined by the Oxford Foot Model. Outcome measures included the vertical and antero-posterior ground reaction forces (GRFs) and the multi-segment foot motions [the dorsiflexion (DF), plantarflexion (PF), inversion (Inv), eversion (Eve), adduction (Add), and abduction (Abd) peak angles for the forefoot with respect to hindfoot (FFHF) and the DF, PF, Inv, Eve, internal rotation (IR), and external rotation (ER) peak angles for the hindfoot with respect to tibia (HFTB) as well as their ranges (R)]. Results: Comparisons between individuals with PF and healthy controls showed no significant differences in any of the GRFs. Significant reductions were found in the FFHF-DF, FFHF-DF-R, FFHF-Inv, and HFTB-Inv/Eve-R in individuals with PF. In addition, there were tendencies of the increased angles of the FFHF-PF, HFTB-DF, HFTB-Inv, and HFTB-ER, but not significantly for individuals with PF, compared to healthy controls. Conclusions: Adaptations of the intra-foot motion showed the reduction of some angles but no change for the GRFs in individuals with PF compared to the healthy controls when both groups walked at a similar gait speed.

Opis:
Purpose: Low-Dye taping is a useful technique for preventing foot injuries. However, the use of inextensible tape may lead to a decline in movement performance as a result of limited foot joint mobility and a change in vertical stiffness due to the passive stiffening of the tarsus and metatarsus. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of low-Dye taping on sport movement performance observed during a hopping task. Methods: The study was carried out on a group of 11 male handball players. The Myotest accelerometer was used to evaluate the effect of low-Dye taping on jumping height, ground contact time and vertical stiffness during the hopping test. Each study participant performed four series of 5 hops (hopping test): two series before low-Dye taping and two after. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between the values recorded before and after low-Dye taping for the variables that describe the hopping task: mean jump height, mean ground contact time and mean vertical stiffness. Conclusions: Low-Dye taping can be successfully used in handball players since it has a preventive effect that reduces the risk of injury to the foot and does not influence vertical stiffness or jump height to a significant extent.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of PLGA bioresorbable polymer coating on corrosion resistance of metal biomaterial. Polymer coating deposited by immersion method was applied. Corrosion resistance of metal biomaterials (stainless steel, Ti6Al4V, Ti6Al7Nb) coated with PLGA polymer, after 90 days exposure to Ringer’s solution was tested. The amount of metal ions released to the solution was also investigated (inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method). The surface of the samples was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Degradation of PLGA was monitored with the use of the 1 H NMR spectroscopy and GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). The studies were carried out for non-sterilized (NS) and sterilized (S) samples. Application of the polymer coating causes a reduction of release of metal ions to the solution. Depending on metal substrate different course of destruction of polymer layer was observed. After 90 days of incubation in Ringer’s solution polymer layer was highly degraded, however, the composition of copolymer (ratio of the comonomeric units in the chain) remained unchanged during the whole process, which suggests even degradation. The polymer layer reduced degradation kinetics of the metal substrate. Moreover, degradation process did not change surface morphology of metal substrate and did not disturb its integrity. The results obtained indicate that the applied polymer layer improves corrosion resistance of the alloys being investigated. Thus, the developed implants with bioresorbable coatings could be advantageous for medical applications.

Purpose: This paper reports the results of investigations of the blood response of the modified titanium alloys surfaces. Methods: To enhance biocompatibility of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy, anodisation was performed at 80 and 150 V. The oxidation process was carried out in a solution containing 4 mol dm−3 H3PO4 and 0.59 mol dm−3 Ca(H2PO2)2. Results: The haemolytic activity of the titanium alloy surface was not altered much by the anodisation. The obtained values of the percentage of haemolysis were well below the levels required for the materials intended for blood contact. The clotting time of the blood was similar for the as-ground sample and the sample anodised at 80 V. For the sample anodised at 150 V the clotting time was shorter. The differences between these samples were observed in partial thromboplastin time after activation, prothrombin time and thrombin time, after 24 h. Extracts taken from the samples were not toxic towards the L-929 mouse fibroblast cells. Conclusions: The proposed treatment might be appropriate for the preparation of the modified Ti-13Nb-13Zr surfaces intended for bone reconstruction or cardiovascular implants depending on process parameters.

Prolonged running has been popularized globally in recent decades. This study was aimed to reveal information about foot morphology, shoe comfort and plantar loading among recreational heel-strike runners. Methods: Twenty-six runners participated in foot morphology, perceived scores and peak pressure tests after 10- and 20-km track running. The foot morphology was measured using a 3D foot scanner, perceived scores were recorded using a visual analogue scale and plantar pressure was measured via insole plantar pressure measurement system. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The heel midsole materials properties were measured before and after 20 km. Significant changes were observed in ball width and girth, arch height and foot volume. The perceived scores showed significance in overall, forefoot and heel comfort, arch support and forefoot width. Peak pressure to the heel, medial mid-foot and metatarsal greatly increased. The first metatarsal showed consecutive increase from static to 10 km, and 20 km, while big-toe showed a decrease. Conclusions: The morphology variations and forefoot loading concentration may lead to discomfort and possibly imply dermatological problems and metatarsal bone stress, particularly on the first metatarsal. Combining changes of heel midsole property, knowledge of foot shape, shoe perception and plantar pressure is of great value for recreational long-distance running shoes design and materials selection.

A novel heterogeneous catalyst, Fe/Mn supported on NaY zeolite, was effectively applied for treating pulp mill effluents. The results of the wastewater quality analysis showed that aromatic structures were present in raw pulp mill effluents, which indicated the difficulty for biodegradation treatments. Two different catalysts were prepared by impregnation (Fe-Mn/NaYim) and sol-gel (Fe-Mn/NaYsg) methods, respectively. The Fe-Mn/NaYsg catalyst demonstrated higher COD removal efficiency and was more stable than the Fe-Mn/NaYim catalyst. The synergistic effects were found between Fe and Mn for COD removal. The highest COD removal efficiency (75.2%) was yielded with the Fe-Mn/NaYsg catalyst (Fe/Mn molar ratio of 2) with 4 mmol/dm3 of H2O2 and 1.2 g/dm3 of catalyst addition. A constant COD removal over time was obtained; the COD removal efficiency amounted to 45% after the Fe-Mn/NaYsg catalyst repeatedly degrading pulp mill effluents for five times. The distribution and transformation of the polarity and molecular weight (MW) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the heterogeneous Fenton process were also studied. Experiments showed that the hydrophobic fraction comprised the largest fraction of DOC (60%) in raw wastewater and high MW molecules were transformed into low MW molecules after the heterogeneous Fenton process. This study broadened the application of the Fenton technology.

Purpose: The aim of our study was to examine the effect of prosthetic alloys with Ti (C, N) coatings on viability and pro life ration of human cells employing an MTT assay with the use of human microvascular endothelial cells derived from the skin – HMEC-1 (Human Microvascular Endothelial Cells-1). Methods: Cylindrical shape samples made of Ni-Cralloy were divided into S1-S5 groups and coated with Ti (C, N) layers with different content of C and N. S0 group – control group without layer. The alloys (S0-S5) were stored in an experimental medium (MCDB131 with antibiotics) for 30 days and then HMEC-1 cells were incubated in the alloy extract for 24 and 96 hours. Next, cell viability was determined using MTT method. Results: In the case of samples incubated for both 24 and 96 hours there are statistically significant differences (with p-value <0.05) between the uncoated samples (S0 group) and all the other Ti (C, N) coated samples. Higher absorbance values were observed in all coated groups than in the control S0 group, where cell growth was statistically significantly lower. Conclusions: During incubation of endothelial cells with coated samples the number of cells was significantly bigger than the number with uncoated alloys. The best viability of cells was obtained from the S = 3 (with 51.94% at. Ti, 28.22% at. C and 19.84% at. N) group of samples. The research comprises a discussion about a formation of intermetallic phase with stoichiometric composition Fe2Ti, called Laves phase, and influence of chromium on the whole structure containing this phase by means of comparison of the two alloys. A base Fe35Ni35Ti30 alloy was used as a reference and then compared with a Fe-Ni-Ti chromium doped - Fe30Ni35Ti30Cr5 alloy. The study of microstructure performed with scanning electron microscope enabled to distinguish different phases. These regions are rich in mixture of Fe-Ni and Ti-Ni elements. The identified phases are Fe2Ti and Ni3Ti which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and simultaneously it is consistent with energy dispersive spectroscopy results. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed also multi-phase composition. As a result different hardness was measured for these phases using nanoindentation. The overall hardness was established using the Vickers method.
