Opis:
During the last three decades bottled water consumption has become the fastest growing and most dynamic sector of all the food and beverage industries. In the study, physical, chemical and microbiological qualities of 30 different brands of bottled water were studied and compared with labeled values. Total hardness and pH values of bottled water were within acceptable range. Concentrations of trace and major chemical elements of all samples were within standard range. Nitrite concentration in all samples was close to zero. Only 6% and 20% of samples had respectively higher than acceptable values of fluorides and turbidity, respectively. Measured concentrations of sodium, calcium, magnesium, fluorides, nitrates, chlorides, pH and (TDS) were significantly different from labeled values on the samples. Twobrand bottles showed positive fecal coliform results while 16 brands of bottled water showed positive HPC results at 37 °C.

Opis:
A pilot-scale subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) was designed for the treatment of polluted river water. The components of microbial communities have been identified and characterized and their dependences on some indicators of biofilm formation in the SWIS have been determined. The average efficiencies of COD, TN and removal were 43.3%, 28.8% and 79.6%, respectively. According to the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profile, high intensity and uniform bands were generated, indicating an abundant microbial community in each layer of the SWIS. Furthermore, the Shannon index analysis showed high correlation to the spatial distribution of microbial communities as well as the quantity of biofilm in each sample, which were characterized by measuring volatile suspended solids (VSS), phospholipids, proteins and polysaccharides. Sequencing of partial 16S rRNA gene fragments revealed that the composition of the total bacterial communities was dominated by Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Flavobacteriaceae, TM-7, and other uncultured bacteria. These bacteria may contribute to nutrient removal in SWIS. +4 NH –N

Opis:
A pilot study for investigating a membrane bioreactor (MBR) performance in treating soy sauce wastewater was divided into three stages. At stage 1, the MBR was operated without excess sludge withdrawal, and pollutants removal increased gradually and entered into a pseudo-stable phase eventually along with increasing mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS). At stage 2, the growth of biomass and removal of pollutants were obviously decreased by lowering temperature. At stage 3, membrane permeate flux and sludge yield under various MLSSs were studied. Additional polishing steps including coagulation and oxidation were validated to be effective to ensure the treated wastewater to meet the discharge limits.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the filter cake permeability. The research was carried out on the excessive sludge flushed out from a septic tank. Two types of laboratory filters: filled with fine sand and made of geotextiles were used. The permeability of the filter cake was inversely correlated linearly to the accumulated organic solids. Based on applied organic solids, the related filter cake permeability time of filter failure can be predicted. The shortest failure time, not exceeding two years, may be recorded when filter cake development and clogging processes simultaneously take place in small-pore diameter filters and when the concentration of volatile solids is high.

Opis:
Removal of suspended solids and microorganisms from an aerated lagoon effluent with a horizontal roughing filter (HRF) was investigated. The aerated lagoon receives Qom municipal wastewater. The HRF was operated at three filtration rates of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m3/(m2·h) during four month operation period. The measured values of turbidity, TSS, COD, pH, temperature and flow rate of HRF at the former filtration rate were 79±12 NTU, 100±11 mg/dm3, 190±12 mg/dm3, 7±0.1 °C, 17±8 °C and 0.82 dm3/min, respectively. The differences between inlet and outlet values of pH and temperature were not significant (P > 0.05). Measures turbidity, TSS and COD in HRF final effluent were 15±13.7 NTU, 37±295 mg/dm3, 64±39.7 mg/dm3, respectively, which corresponds to 81.1%, 63% and 66.3% removal efficiencies, respectively. A decrease of removal efficiency was observed upon increasing filtration rates. The Spearman correlation coefficients between the head-loss and removal efficiencies ranged from 0.578 to 0.968 pointing to a direct relationship. Results of modeling approach revealed appropriate compliance between the values of the observed and predicted TSS for higher filtration rates.
