Opis:
Sludge treatment is one of the most difficult challenges for many industrial plants. In recent years, the use of ultrasound power has received considerable attention as one of the increasing tool for managing of this problem. Power ultrasound enhances chemical and physical changes in a liquid medium through the generation and subsequent destruction of cavitations bubbles. Therefore, the increased friction and stress in solution resultant with cleaning of the solid surfaces and dispersion of bonded/aggregated solid particles. In this study, the basic fundamentals of ultrasonic treatment and process variables were briefly overviewed. The study was also extended with preliminary analyses performed to determine its ability on the extraction of major and trace elements from Kırka Borax Concentrator tailings mainly boron as boric acid and Li as Li reach pregnant solution (PLS). Prior and after the sonification tests, physical, chemical and morphological analyses were carried out to determine the treatment performance. It was found that sonication leads the liberation of boron minerals from sludge and with the help of temperature they are dissolved and re-crystallized on clay substrate during cooling stage. The extraction test performed with these crystals revealed that Li-rich solution (that can be further use as source of lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide production), and boric acid could be produced with easy and low cost beneficiation method.

Opis:
Six-month experiments have been carried out using pilot installations of low-budget methods of sewage sludge treatment. Sewage sludge was processed using vermiculture or plants such as willow or reed. The study was also conducted in a solar dryer. In some parts of the research, effective microorganisms were used. The results of the sediment research, including: contents of organic and mineral matter, hydration reaction, contents of nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as the indicators of the sanitary condition, were presented. The results confirmed a perceptible influence of the effective microorganisms on the structure of the dry mass of dairy sewage dewatered on reed and willow plots or transformed into vermicompost. A slight, however, apparent difference in a faster and more effective mineralization of organic substances contained in the sludge after half a year of processing, as well as significant reduction of the number of potential pathogenic bacteria was observed.

Possibility of using phosphogypsum as a mineral substrate for the sewage sludge treatment in bio-sulfidogenic conditions has been investigated. Anaerobic microbiological degradation (AMD) on way of sulfidogenesis was used to produce biogenic hydrogen sulfide. The ozonation of the sludge prior to the AMD under bio-sulfidogenic conditions led to higher efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide production and organic matter removal. After 20 days of digestion, the elimination of CODt and CODs varied between 78-84% and 83-87%, respectively, within advanced operation of anaerobic bioreactor. Technological applications of such system has been discussed.

Opis:
Recent changes to the sewage sludge management can be attributed to the restrictive deadlines of implementing EU regulations concerning wastewater treatment and sewage sludge utilization. Drying and thermal treatment of sewage sludge is becoming increasingly popular. From nearly zero share of thermal treatment methods in the sewage sludge management currently the share exceeds 35%. Implementation of numerous investments is facilitated by respective structure programs in the scope of environmental protection supported with EU funds. The analysis of chosen aspects of new operational experience constitutes the main part of the present paper. Analysed were domestic operational practices concerning the applied technologies of sewage sludge drying, their effectiveness and reliability. The aspect of effectiveness of flue gas cleaning with the use of sodium bicarbonate, method characteristic for many Polish sewage sludge incineration facilities, is discussed in detail. The analysis is based on the current operational data and own research.

A complex activated sludge model implemented in BioWin software has been implemented to assure its predictability and improve the effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment in the full-scale plant in Poland. The influence of temperature and sludge retention time (SRT) on the quality of the effluent was also studied. The calibration was successfully performed according to the Good Modelling Practice Unified (GMP) protocol. Five parameters at a steady state and ten under dynamic conditions were calibrated. It occurred that in the studied wastewater treatment plant SRT should be kept at the low level sufficient to sustain nitrification.

The effectiveness of co-treatment of leachates from an old site of municipal landfill with a dairy industry wastewater in a membrane bioreactor has been investigated. The subjects of the study were leachates collected at the municipal landfill in Tychy and dairy wastewaters from Dairy Plant in Bieruń. The determination of the most effective technological parameters of the process, i.e. activated sludge load and its concentration and types of COD fractions in the reactor influent was made. It was shown that the activated sludge load at the level of 0.06 g COD/(gDM·d) was the highest permissible one among all the investigated loads and the process run effectively within the whole investigated range of concentrations of activated sludge in a bioreactor. It was found that in the treated wastewater, the fraction of easily degradable organic compounds was the dominant one.

Parameters characterizing the dewatering process of sewage sludge in small wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been analyzed. Two municipal wastewater treatment plants of comparable capacity and similar technology of sewage treatment were selected to the analysis. Comparison of dewaterability of unprepared and conditioned sludge was made. During preliminary tests, the capillary suction time (CST) of sludge conditioned with cationic polyelectrolyte was determined. Next, for the optimal doses of selected polyelectrolyte, more detailed technological experiments were conducted such as vacuum filtration and susceptibility to the gravitational thickening. Tested sludge had very low susceptibility to thickening. The final volume of unprepared tested samples after 2 hour thickening was 977.0 cm3, while the initial volume of thickened sludge was 1000 cm3.The lowest value of final hydration for conditioned sludge was 64.0%.

The study summarises the energy consumption data obtained from the Slovak wastewater treatment plants. Overall, 51 large WWTPs using mesophilic anaerobic sludge digestion and biogas utilisation (the total capacity of 2.5 mil. p.e.) and 17 small rural WWTPs (the total capacity 15 000 p.e.) were compared in many technological and energy parameters. The average energy consumption in large WWTPs in Slovakia is 0.485 kWh/m3 and 0.915 kWh/m3 in small rural plants. The average energy demand related to BOD5 load represents the value of 2.27 kWh/kg BOD5, in Slovak plants. The specific energy production is relatively low - in average 1.2 kWh el /m3 of produced biogas and 0.1 kWh el /m 3 of treated wastewater, respectively. The average energy autarky in Slovak plants is 25.2%. Some plants have high energy autarky (>65%), despite no external biowastes being dosed to these during operation.

Opis:
Stable and efficient nitrogen removal is one of main goals of wastewater treatment. Applying deammonification, beyond many advantages, results in the risk of the WWTP effluent quality violation in case of the failure of the process. Then nitrogen load to activated sludge is increasing rapidly which could therefore lead to quality violation in activated sludge effluent. Simulation studies have been presented on the effect of deammonification failure on nitrogen removal performance in the case of a typical, medium sized WWTP (ca. 115 000 PE). The studies were based on the calibrated ASMI model of real WWTP and a fictional scenario of implementing deammonification and subsequent failure. Implementing deammonification enables SR T optimization of the sludge retention time (SRT) in its main line thanks to lower nitrogen load. Two scenarios have been shown, considering or not optimization of the SRT in WWTP. The results show that SRT optimization leads to decrease in nitrifier mass and raises difficult issues in appropriate nitrogen concentration in the effluent.

Excessive sewage sludge in terms of contained phosphorus speciation forms has been characterized. The analysis allowed identification of mobile forms of phosphorus in sewage sludge. Quantification of mobile forms of phosphorus is very important for its recovery directly from sewage sludge or for its application for natural purposes. Various phosphorus speciation methods have been presented. The results of the sewage sludge speciation conducted by means of two types of wastewater treatment (EvU-Perl technology and activated sludge) have been compared. The analysis covered the effect of such physiochemical factors as oxygenation, use of ultrasound and precipitation with iron chloride(III). It was concluded that changes in physiochemical conditions lead to alterations in the content of phosphorus speciation forms in sewage sludge.

Opis:
This study was conducted to evaluate wastewater sludge from various sources for agricultural utilization. The results showed that sludge from municipal and food industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have high fertilizing value with respect to nutrients and organic matter levels. When the sludge samples were evaluated for their total heavy metal contents, the Pb, Cd and Cu concentrations in all of the sludge samples were found to be below the limit specified by Turkish regulations. However, the Cr, Ni and Zn contents of domestic type, organized industrial zone, food industry sludge samples exceeded these thresholds. Other sludges were found to be suitable for agricultural usage in terms of plant nutrient and heavy metal content. The analysis of the sludge samples from twelve different WWTP’s showed that the agricultural properties and the total and bioavailable (DTPA-extractable) heavy metal fraction varies depending on the sludge samples. Therefore discussed sludges should be evaluated separately for the agricultural utilization potential in terms of soil pollution.

Opis:
The performance of microbial fuel cell (MFC) in treating potato waste was evaluated using a two-chamber MFC supplied with potato liquid after mastication of market available fresh potato. Evaluation was conducted based on electricity generation, organic matter removal (CODCr, DOC and volatile fatty acids (VFAs)), and microbial structure on the anode and in the anodic solution of the reactor. Current density exhibited a trend that followed the concentration changes of organic matter in the solution, with its highest value being observed as 208 mA/m2. Effective removal of organic matter was also observed. By the end of the experiment, the removal for total COD reached about 84%. Bacterial structure analysis based on PCR, DGGE and sequencing indicated that more species were developed in the anodic solution than on the anode, with Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroides being dominant. Geobacter, a well reported exoelectrogenic species, was found more predominant on the anode than in the anodic solution. The results thus indicated that simultaneous stabilization and electricity generation could be achieved when potato waste is treated in MFC.

Opis:
The interactions of heavy metals and cement phases in the solidification/stabilization (S/S) process have been examined. The S/S method was applied to the waste sludge contaminated with heavy metals to determine the conditions under which the treated materials can be safely disposed of at landfills for inert, non-hazardous, or hazardous waste. Sludge samples were mixed with soil and sand to simulate improper sludge disposal directly into the soil. S/S technology was selected using different cement fractions to treat these contaminated samples. The use of Portland cement or mixtures of different types of cement for the treatment of sludge containing heavy metals is widespread. Samples of leached content were analyzed for the presence of the following metals: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn). The study results lead to the conclusion that the sludge contaminated with heavy metals after the application of S/S with the addition of different cement fractions is transformed into non-hazardous, monolithic material.
