Opis:
The motion characteristics of mineral particles in a modified fluidized bed (mFB) with inclined plates have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. A particulate sedimentation model is built on the fluidization superficial velocity, terminal settling velocity, the device dimensions, the particle properties, and the volume fraction of the particulate suspensions in the inclined channel, which is to describe the motion behavior of particles in mono-disperse suspensions. The experimental particles are a mixture of silica and sand particles with the sizes in the range of 425 - 710 μm and 710 - 880 μm, respectively. Further, the model is extended to describe bi-disperse suspensions. The experimental system is established to be consistent with the theoretical arrangements, aiming to provide more accurate measurements. Specifically, the prediction results are in good agreement with the experimental data with the absolute deviation less than 11%. The results showed that the average solid volume fraction in the inclined channel fluctuates slightly for a given total solid inventory. The theoretical model is of certain practical significance for applications of this system to the classification, separation, and desliming of minerals.

Opis:
This work is focused on dewatering of barite-containing clay waste from a barite beneficiation plant by coagulation and flocculation to enhance the dewatering rate and recycling of process water. A flocculation performance of co-polymers (Superfloc A-130 and A-100) was compared with coagulants (Al2SO418H2O, CaCl2 and FeCl36H2O). The best results were obtained with an anionic co-polymer, i.e. Superfloc A-130. The settling rate increased 635-fold in the case of using anionic co-polymer Superfloc A-130 in comparison with the natural settling rate of the same wastewater. In laboratory tests, an optimum thickener design was developed for the barite clay wastewater. In this paper, sedimentation studies on the barite clay wastes are presented for the first time, both as the laboratory studies and industrial applications.

Opis:
Various factors influencing adsorption on powdered activated carbon (PAC) used for the removal of organic compounds from water and wastewater have been investigated. Incomplete utilization of adsorption capacity of PAC observed in current technological applications is caused by too short con-tact times of aqueous solutions with carbon particles and the system configuration (adsorption in volume systems with simultaneous coagulation). A new method has been proposed involving application of PAC into the upper layer of a two-layer filter or a middle layer of a three-layer filter during bed fluidization. The extended contact time between aqueous solutions and PAC increases the amount of adsorbate adsorbed on the surface of activated carbon. A comparative studies conducted on adsorption in both volume and column systems confirmed better utilization of adsorption capacity for PAC applied on a filter bed. Two models of PAC adsorption in transient conditions were developed for volume and column systems. Computer simulations confirmed that the adsorption capacity of PAC may be in-creased by several times in column systems with respect to the commonly used adsorption with coagulation in volume systems.

Opis:
Sedimentation of red blood cell aggregates was experimentally investigated by optical imaging. Suspensions of red blood cell at low hematocrit were obtained from blood of healthy donors. The velocity of three-dimensional red blood cell aggregates was measured using particle image velocimetry. The magnitude and spatial correlation functions of the velocity fluctuations of the settling aggregates were determined. It is shown that the fluctuations in the settling velocity exhibit characteristic correlations in the form of swirls. The formation of 3-D red blood cell aggregates leads to a large initial swirl. The growth of the aggregates and their sedimentation diminishes the swirls size.

Opis:
The presented study aimed to compare the effectiveness of ultrafiltration and filtration through a sand bed during the water treatment process after the coagulation and sedimentation. The study was conducted in two flow-type water treatment systems: the reference and the test system. Both systems functioned continuously with a throughput of 1 m3/h. The research has shown that both processes ensured a very effective removal of post-coagulation suspensions, however, ultrafiltration was more effective. The filtration process allowed a slightly higher removal of organic substances as compared to ultrafiltration. The effectiveness of the removal of organic substances was determined by the biological activity of sand beds, which is not allowed in the ultrafiltration process. Besides, during the filtration process, aluminum remaining after coagulation was more effectively removed. In turn, the ultrafiltration process ensured an almost 100% effectiveness in reducing the total microorganism cell count, while the effectiveness of the filtration process was approximately half of that. In the end, the possibility of replacing the filtration process with the ultrafiltration process is determined by the costs of both processes.

Opis:
Microalgae wastewater treatment technology has not only the function of wastewater treatment but also biomass production, resource recovery, and biological carbon fixation with significant economic and environmental benefits. Good sedimentation of microalgae cells is the key to realize wastewater treatment and microalgae cell proliferation. In this study, short settling time in sequence batch reactors (SBRs) was utilizable as an environmental selection pressure to promote the auto-flocculation of Chlorella vulgaris treating synthetic domestic wastewater. After 60 days of operation, bacteria-microalgae consortia formed in the reactors, improving the settling efficiencies. Microalgae cultivation reactor with 30 min settling time had the largest flocs size and highest settling efficiency. Bacteria-microalgae granular sludge had a relatively high content of P, Fe, Mg, and Ca elements that both bacteria and microalgae coexisted and adhered to each other. The dominant bacteria distribution of bacteria-microalgae granular sludge was like that of aerobic granular sludge, which implied bacteria played a vital role in Chlorella vulgaris auto-flocculation. Lastly, the mechanism of Chlorella vulgaris auto-flocculation in wastewater treatment was interpreted.

Opis:
Three samples of cosmetic wastewater from the production of soaps and shampoos were treated by the following processes: coagulation with sedimentation (C/S), coagulation with dissolved air flotation (C/DAF), and the Fenton process (FP). The COD values of raw wastewater samples were 13 160, 13 580 and 9410 mg O2/dm3. The anionic surfactants were 3000, 4500 and 4000 mg/dm3, for samples 1, 2, and 3, respectively. All three processes were effective in highly polluted cosmetic wastewater treatment. The most effective process was coagulation. In the case of sample 1, application of FeCl3 at pH 6.0 resulted in 88.2% of COD removal and the application of aluminum based coagulants allowed for 80.1–85.3% COD removal. In the case of samples 2 and 3, the usage of Al 1019 and Al 3010 coagulants brought about a 91.6% and 82.6% decrease in COD values, respectively. C/DAF was found to be less effective than C/S. The best results with C/DAF were obtained using Al 3010 coagulant with wastewater recirculation the COD removal efficiency amounted to 82.3, 87.3 and 78.8, respectively. The lowest COD removal efficiency was observed for FP and it was equal to 64.0 and 72.7% for samples 2 and 3, respectively.
