Opis:
Upgrading concepts for the Bioblok MU200a wastewater treatment plant have been presented. The main goals were to achieve an effective nitrogen removal and reduce energy demand. The reference version has been presented, followed by two retrofitting options: introduction of intermittent aeration for alternating aerobic and anoxic conditions, additionally including a retrofitting option to a hybrid technology that combines advantages of activated sludge and biofilm. To design and assess both variants, the ASM3 model was used, running on the Simba# simulator. A rather complex biofilm model, necessary for the hybrid concept, was bypassed by installing a separate activated sludge process differing in terms of sludge age and disposal of its excess sludge to the reactor. In this way, favorable technological parameters for efficient wastewater treatment could be assessed. Both upgrading concepts can be recommended for their satisfactory treatment effectiveness, feasibility in existing plants and considerable energy savings. The significance of the modelled effects was statistically confirmed two-tailed Student’s t-test.

Opis:
Urea manufacturing discharge contains a high load of nitrogen, a pollutant which needs advanced technologies to be reduced to desirable levels. However, these advanced technologies are expensive due to the complex process and cost of chemicals and maintenance. Phytoremediation has been recently considered for N removal from various wastewaters. However, the common phytoremediation plants (reeds and grasses) are not able to remove N effectively due to the recyclable nature of N through decomposition processes. Therefore, they require periodic harvestings which impose a high cost on system. In this study, the growth and phytoremediation potential of teak (Tectona grandis), a tropical timber plant, to treat the urea manufacturing wastewater was evaluated. Eight month old teak seedlings received 4 different concentrations of N in bench-scale constructed wetlands every 4 days for 8 weeks. The solution volumes supplied to each container and plant biomass, N recovery, and tissue nutrient concentration were measured. Teak plants showed an escalation in wastewater N uptake with increasing amount of supplied N. Total dry weight was positively correlated with total N supplied. Teak seedlings showed a considerable potential for removing nitrogen when they were supplied with up to 5 g N per pot volume (4 dm3) during a two-month experiment.

structured-bed reactor submitted to recirculation and intermittent aeration (SBRRIA)
Opis:
This study aimed to show the application of a structured-bed reactor subjected to recirculation and intermittent aeration (SBBRIA) for nitrogen and carbon removal from three different wastewater streams. Three different types of sludge were used for inoculation of the reactors: sludge from an UASB reactor (reactor R1), sludge from an activated sludge reactor with nitrifying activity (reactor R2) and a mixture of sludge used in R1 and R2 (reactor R3). Different operational procedures were applied in order to analyze the influence of HRT in R1, the influence of aerobic/anoxic phases in R2 and the influence of COD/N ratio in R3. The efficiencies of COD removal remained higher than 85%, regardless of the decrease in HRT, the adoption of different cycles of intermittent aeration or different COD/N ratios. The total-N removal efficiencies obtained for both reactors suggested that HRT is the operational parameter that has more influence in the nitrogen removal performance. Moreover, considering the results obtained with the treatment of three different types of wastewater, the SBRRIA reactor is adequate in conditions of high or low availability of electron donors for heterotrophic denitrification, due to the establishment of the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process as an additional pathway of nitrogen removal under conditions of reduced COD/N ratio.

Opis:
Removal of biogens (P, N) from synthetic wastewater by microalgae Chlorella vulgaris was investigated. The study was carried out under static conditions (batch tests). Significant differences were found in the removal of nutrients by algae. The removal of biogens was >50% for ammonium ions and >80% for nitrates and phosphates. N and P removal through assimilation by microalgal C. vulgaris species can be considered an ecological alternative for current methods applied for removal of these substances from wastewater. It seems that using algae for N and P removal from wastewater can be affordable in comparison to other methods. The efficiency of biogens removal depends on the type of a biogen to be removed and the concentration of N and P in solutions. Optimization of N:P ratio can have some positive influence on the removal of biogens from wastewater by C. vulgaris.

Opis:
A new bacteria named Pseudomonas fulva K3 (P. fulva) strain was isolated from the surroundings of weathered crust rare earth tailing with efficient NH4+-N removal ability via heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification. The nitrogen removal properties could be intensified by the synergistic effect between as-prepared magnesium-modified biochar (MgBC) and P. fulva strain. The results show that P. fulva exhibited a rod-shaped morphology and $NH_4+-N$ can be completely biodegraded under the optimal conditions of pH=7.0~8.0, temperature 30 oC and initial $NH_4+-N$ concentration of 100 ~150 mg/L. The $NH_4+-N$ tolerant concentration for P. fulva was determined to be 300 mg/L. The magnesium-modified biochar (MgBC) worked as an adsorbent of $NH_4+-N$. The kinetics and isotherm model for adsorption could be described by the pseudo-secondorder kinetic and Freundlich model, respectively. The XPS results showed that $NH_4+-N$ was mainly adsorbed on the surface by chemical adsorption. Furthermore, the P. fulva could be immobilized on MgBC due to its large surface area, adjusting the concentration of $NH_4+-N$ to a proper range for the growth of P. fulva by adsorption and desorption equilibrium, and leading to the intensified effect on nitrogen removal. The total nitrogen removal efficiency of the eluted weathered crust rare earth tailing reached 84.7 % in MgBC + P. fulva system.

Opis:
Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are health hazardous gases, which contribute to the formation of submicron acidic particulates. To reduce SO2 and NOx emission from the sintering flue gas, the combination of ammonia-Fe(II)EDTA solution scrubbing with Fe(III) electrolytic regeneration is proposed. The above method has the following advantages: direct conversion of NOx and SO2 to harmless N2 and SO4 2−, recovery of the by-product (NH4)2SO4), simultaneous removal of NOx and SO2 emission from flue gas in the reactor. The effect of the pH, initial Fe(II)EDTA concentration, and voltage on the desulfurization and denitration efficiencies was investigated using a bench-scale reactor. The maximal desulfurization and denitration efficiencies were 98% and 52%, respectively. The optimum parameters were pH ˃ 5.0, 2.1 V, and 0.05 mol·dm–3 Fe(II)EDTA concentration. SO2 and NOx removal from the sintering flue gas by ammonia-Fe(II)EDTA solution scrubbing combined with electrolytic regeneration was also demonstrated in a pilot-scale reactor.

Influence of composition of raw wastewater on the efficiency of organic matter and nitrogen removal in multistage treatment wetlands has been examined. Commonly used indicators, like COD/BOD5 and BOD5/TN ratio, determining wastewater susceptibility to biodegradation in conventional treatment technologies were assessed. It was confirmed that multistage treatment wetland may be used for treatment of wastewater with high loads of organic pollutants and unfavorable composition for a biological treatment expressed by the ratio of COD/BOD5 and BOD5/TN equal to 2.7 and 0.7, respectively.

Opis:
The feasibility of aluminum powder (with particle size of 75–150 μm) for nitrate removal from aqueous solutions has been investigated. Adsorption was examined in function of initial nitrate concentration, contact time, pH and influence of other interfering anions. Maximum nitrate removal occurred at equilibrium pH of 10. The kinetics of adsorption of nitrate ions was discussed based on three kinetic models, namely: the pseudo-first order, the pseudo-second order and the intraparticle diffusion model. The experimental data fitted the pseudo-second order kinetic model very well; the rate constant was 4x10–4 g/ (mg·min) at the concentration of NO3- of 100 mg/dm3. The adsorption data followed both Langmuir (R2 = 0.808) and Freundlich (R2 = 0.865) isotherms probably due to the real heterogeneous nature of the surface sites involved in the nitrate uptake. The maximum sorption capacity of aluminum powder for nitrate adsorption was found to be ca. 45.2 mg/g at room temperature. The results indicate that aluminum powder is an interesting alternative for nitrate removal from the water.

The micellar enhanced ultrafiltration of model aqueous solutions containing inorganic nitrogen and phosphorous compounds was studied. In the experiments, cellulose membranes of 5, 10 and 30 kDa molecular weight cut-off and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant were used. The concentration of CTAB amounted to 2 and 3CMC (critical micelle concentration). The influence of surfactant concentration, membrane cut-off and operating pressure on permeate flux, as well as on nitrate and phosphate separation was evaluated. The results showed that the presence of both nitrates and phosphates caused deterioration of the retention coefficient in comparison to separation efficiency achieved for one-component solutions.

Opis:
An anaerobic-anoxic/oxic (AA/O) five-tank biological process called five-step continuous flow activated sludge process (FSCFASP) was developed to force the oscillation of organic matter and nutrient concentrations in process reactors. The run scheme and schematic diagram of FSCFASP was described. The run cycle was divided into two symmetrical half cycles with eight periods during each cycle. The duration of each period was established according to biological process requirements. The optimal running times of the periods were 90, 60, 60, 30, 90, 60,6 0 and 30 min at the HRT of 16 h, air/water ratio of 35% and SRT of 21 day at the temperature range of 19-23 °C. The optimized system achieved 88.09±1.43%, 90.33±2.9%, 68.83±5.34% and 87.67±2.9% of the chemical oxygen demand, NH4+-N, TN, and TP removal efficiencies, respectively, during a 11-month operation with the effluent meeting the Chinese sewage discharge standard GB18918-2002 (level A). Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification phenomena were observed in the tank one which is important to reduce the quantity of aeration and the duration of a next anoxic state. Compared with other existing technologies, this system achieved high nitrogen and phosphorus removal without equipment of sludge and mixed liquor return. Thus, it is effective for reducing energy consumption.

Research into the removal efficiency of biogenic substances, necessary for the growth of heterotrophic microorganisms, was carried out for the following water treatment trials: surface water, infiltrative water and mixed surface water after microsieving with aerated underground water. The results have shown that the efficiency of removal of organic substances, independently of the type of treated water, increased along with the organic carbon concentrations in raw water. The average effectiveness of phosphate removal was: 92.1%, 88.8% and 83.7% for surface, infiltrative and mixed water, respectively. In all analyzed systems, presence of phosphates was an limiting factor for the regrowth of microorganisms in the distribution system. In none of the water treatment trials, effective removal of inorganic nitrogen has been recorded.

Opis:
Two separate experiments were conducted during the months of June and September, 2014 to investigate the nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) removal from leachate by growing duckweed, Lemna minor in various leachate dilutions under natural climatic conditions of Islamabad, Pakistan. The highest uptake of nitrogen and phosphorous by duckweed was 95% and 90%, respectively, whereas the highest growth rate of duckweed was 6.4 g·m–2·day–1 during both experiments. The highest rates of nitrogen and phosphorous removal from leachate media were 380 and 200 mg·m–2·day–1, respectively, during both experiments. Nutrient uptake by duckweed and its growth rate was rapid at more diluted leachate whereas the nutrient removal rates from leachate media were higher in more concentrated leachate. The duckweed growth and its nutrient uptake ability under natural climatic conditions were directly affected by seasonal climatic variations. Relatively higher temperature and more intense solar radiation were more favorable for the duckweed growth and its nutrient uptake ability. Both parameters can be improved by pre-acclimation of duckweed with leachate which prevents the lag phase of the duckweed growth.
