Opis:
In the present paper, a three-dimensional problem of bearing capacity of square footing on random soil medium is analyzed. The random fields of strength parameters c and φ are generated using LAS procedure (Local Average Subdivision, Fenton and Vanmarcke 1990). The procedure used is re-implemented by the authors in Mathematica environment in order to combine it with commercial program. Since the procedure is still tested the random filed has been assumed as one-dimensional: the strength properties of soil are random in vertical direction only. Individual realizations of bearing capacity boundary-problem with strength parameters of medium defined the above procedure are solved using FLAC3D Software. The analysis is performed for two qualitatively different cases, namely for the purely cohesive and cohesive-frictional soils. For the latter case the friction angle and cohesion have been assumed as independent random variables. For these two cases the random square footing bearing capacity results have been obtained for the range of fluctuation scales from 0.5 m to 10 m. Each time 1000 Monte Carlo realizations have been performed. The obtained results allow not only the mean and variance but also the probability density function to be estimated. An example of application of this function for reliability calculation has been presented in the final part of the paper.

Opis:
The paper deals with reliability analysis of square footing on soil with strength anisotropy. The strength of the soil has been described with identified anisotropic strength criterion dedicated to geomaterials with layered microstructure. The analysis assumes dip angle α and azimuth angle β which define direction of lamination of the structure to be random variables with given probability density functions. Bearing capacity being a function of these variables is approximated based on results of deterministic simulations obtained for variety of orientations. The weighted regression method by Kaymaz and McMahon within the framework of Response Surface Method is used for the approximation. As a result of analysis, global factor of safety that corresponds to assumed value of probability of failure is determined. The value of the safety factor denotes the ratio between the value of the design load and the mean value of bearing capacity which is needed to reduce the probability of failure to the acceptable level. The procedure of calculating the factor has been presented for two different cases. In the first case, no information about lamination direction of the soil has been provided and thus all the orientations are assumed to be equally probable (uniform distribution). In the second case, statistical information including mean, variance and assumed probability distribution for both α and β angle is known. For the latter case, using results obtained for few different values of mean of angle α, also the influence of strength anisotropy on the value of global factor of safety is shown.

Opis:
Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries. Restraint systems of cars are evaluated by crash tests based on human tolerance data, however, the reliability of data currently used has been questioned several times in the literature due to the neglect of certain types of effects, injury types and uncertainties. Our main goal was to re-evaluate the currently applied risk curve by taking the previously neglected effects into account. Methods: In this paper, the probability of traumatic brain injury was determined by reliability analysis where different types of uncertainties are taken into account. The tissue-level response of the human brain in the case of frontal crashes was calculated by finite element analyses and the injury probability is determined by Monte Carlo simulations. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to identify which effects have considerable contribution to the injury risk. Results: Our results indicate a significantly larger injury risk than it is predicted by current safety standards. Accordingly, a new risk curve was constructed which follows a lognormal distribution with the following parameters: μLN = 6.5445 and LN = 1.1993. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that this difference primarily can be attributed to the rotational effects and tissue-level uncertainties. Conclusions: Results of the tissue-level reliability analysis enhance the belief that rotational effects are the primary cause of brain injuries. Accordingly, the use of a solely translational acceleration based injury metric contains several uncertainties which can lead to relatively high injury probabilities even if relatively small translational effects occur.

Opis:
This paper deals with the performance assessment of a textile industry, namely African Textile Manufactures (ATM) Ltd., in Chalawa, Kano industrial estate, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The entire system ATM has different sections of machines for processing various assignments. The machines in the sections have diverse capabilities. We assumed the following subsystems: spinning, weaving, pretreatment, printing, and steaming. The failure rates of subsystems are constant, and they follow exponential distribution, while the repairs follow two types of distributions, namely general distribution and Gumbel–Hougaard family copula distribution. The system analyzed by employing supplementary variable and the Laplace transform. Various measures of reliability have been computed for differential values of failures and two types of repair. The conclusions and some recommendations are addressed to improving the management of ATM.

Implikuje to potrzebę rozszerzenia zakresu i zmiany standardowego podejścia w analizie konstrukcyjnej.
The paper presents the author’s experience and his personal views on the challenges that arise from the new trend in design – Free Form Design (FFD). Based on the experience gained it was possible to identify the hazards that unfettered creation of architectural form poses for the structural system. This implies the need for extension of range and change of the standard approach in the structural analysis.
