Opis:
Bentonite is the traditionally used binder in iron ore pelletization. However, it consists of up to 85% silica and alumina which are undesired acidic gangue in iron-making. In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and cornstarch were used as acidic gangue-free organic alternatives to bentonite in synthesizing iron pellets. Iron ore, water and the corresponding binder were mixed and rolled in a pelletizing disk to form green pellets. The green pellets were dried and subsequently indurated in a furnace at 1200 ℃ to form indurated pellets. To evaluate the effectiveness of the organic binders, the pellets produced were tested on various pellet properties. Known industrial pellet property standards and the bentonite binder were used as references. Carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and corn starch produced green pellets with average drop numbers of 7.20 ± 0.84, 5.60 ± 0.89 and 6.00 ± 1.00 respectively, compared to bentonite’s 5.00 ± 0.71. Dry pellets of average compressive strength 5.93 ± 0.09, 5.86 ± 0.03 and 11.52 ± 0.18 kg/pellet were produced by carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium lignosulfonate and corn starch respectively while bentonite’s averaged 5.60 ± 0.08 kg/pellet. For indurated pellets, carboxymethyl cellulose (210.2 ± 1.88 kg/pellet) and sodium lignosulfonate (198.1 ± 2.49 kg/pellet) pellets were weaker than those of bentonite (250.4 ± 2.06 kg/pellet) but satisfied the industrial requirement of 181.4 kg/pellet. A boron oxide additive (0.1 wt. %) was used to boost the strength of carboxymethyl cellulose indurated pellets to 252.6 ± 1.32 kg/pellet, rendering them superior to those of bentonite.

The mineralogical studies indicated that the Charagah ore deposit contains approximately 17% pyrolusite, 78% calcite and 3–4% quartz. Pyrolusite as a main valuable mineral is found in the forms of coarse and fine pyrolusites. The coarse grains pyrolusite with simple texture is liberated at 180 micrometers. Another kind of pyrolusite with particle size finer than 10 m is disseminated inside gangue phases. This kind of pyrolusite has important effect in beneficiation processes and can affect the manganese grade of the concentrate and its recovery negatively. By jigging machine a pre-concentrate with 20% MnO and a final tailing with about 13% manganese loss are obtained. Using tabling technique or wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and also their combination with jigging machine, production of a final pyrolusite concentrate with suitable grade but average recovery is possible. By jigging-tabling a concentrate with – 500+45 m size fraction, 44.3% MnO and 61.3% recovery is obtained while jigging-WHIMS produces a concentrate containing 52.6% MnO with a recovery up to 56.6% and d80 = 180 m.

Opis:
A biconical dense medium cyclone (BDMC) was applied to reject the gangue from a low-grade Pb-Zn sulfide ore for the first time. Based on mineralogy and heavy liquid separation tests, it was found that the rejection of gangue by the BDMC prior to grinding and flotation was promising. The results revealed that the particle size clearly affected the heavy liquid separation process. The effects of several parameters, such as medium specific gravity (SG), spigot diameter, tilt angle, cone angle and medium/ore mass ratio, on the yield of floats and on the metal recoveries in the floats were examined and the optimal parameters were determined. The results showed that 51.22% of floats were obtained with a lead recovery of 7.92% and a zinc recovery of 12.50%. The extended tests were further carried out with the BDMC being capable of throughputs about 3 t/h, which verified the results obtained in the laboratory experiments. The use of this equipment to pre-treat the refractory ore is promising.

Opis:
Comminution in a High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) device is considered as one of the most efficient method to break particles, in terms of the energy utilization. Two main types of the rolls linings are applied in hard ore grinding: studded and hexagonal, which show varied characteristics of operation and have different lifetime of service. The article concerns the analysis of HPGR device operation for various linings of the rolls. Two pilot-scale test programmes were run and performance of both types of rolls was tested in terms of energy consumption, technological effects measured by means of comminution ratio, lifetime service as well as economic aspects. Results of investigation show, that much longer lifetime service was obtained for the studded rolls, while hexagonal ones are more favourable from economic scope. The feed material for the HPGR comminution tests was Polish copper ore from two divisions of processing plants of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. Taking into account that industrial comminution operations in mining and mineral processing sector consume over 50% of total energy utilized for ore treatment operations, the problem is of a major significance, especially in terms of optimization of hard ore crushing and grinding circuits.

Opis:
Hydrometallurgical treatment of complex copper sulfidic ores, by-products and concentrates requires aggressive, oxidative leaching methods and application of Fe(III) ions and oxygen or bacteria assisted environment. Leach liquors generated in the process are usually copper and iron-rich solutions of high acidity. Such conditions require the application of suitably strong and selective reagent to extract copper in SX operations. This paper discusses the copper extraction behavior of commercial copper rea-gents: LIX 984N, LIX 612N-LV and Acorga M5640. Aqueous feed solutions used in SX studies were PLS’ generated in atmospheric leaching of commercial flotation concentrate, produced at Lubin Concen-trator (KGHM). McCabe-Thiele diagrams were generated and copper net transfer values were compared and discussed. It was shown that stronger modified aldoxime reagents (Acorga, LIX 612) are superior over non-modified salicylaldoxime/ketoxime mixture (LIX 984N). Particularly, the ester modified Acor-ga M5640 showed advantages in recovery and copper net transfer values.

Opis:
Refractory gold ores have poor gold recoveries with direct cyanide leaching. Typically the refractoriness is due to encapsulation of the gold particles inside the host mineral. To liberate gold for leaching the host mineral must be broken by mechanical or chemical means. The aim of this study was to study the effect of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and slurry density on pressure oxidation of pyrite-arsenopyrite gold concentrate. Batch oxidation tests in an autoclave were done using a factorial design. Different responses were measured and analysed to study effect of the three factors and oxidation kinet-ics. Generally, high slurry density required high temperature and oxygen partial pressure to reach com-plete oxidation. Oxidation kinetics at 225°C temperature, with 1050 kPa oxygen partial pressure and 15% slurry density was found to be fastest resulting in complete conversion of sulfides in 30 minutes. At 195°C, 700 kPa oxygen partial pressure and 10% slurry density, the oxidation kinetics for complete sul-fide conversion was about 60 minutes. Slurry densities above 10% had an adverse effect on the oxidation rate, when the temperature was below 225°C and oxygen partial pressure below 1050 kPa.

In all working Saudi gold mines, ores are treated using the hazardous cyanidation process. Some Saudi gold ores, such as Al-Amar, is known to be refractory to cyanidation. In this work, we have examined the extraction of gold from Al-Amar gold ore by the much environmentally safer and efficient thiosulfate process. The run of mine (ROM) and carbon-in-leach (CIL) feed, that is obtained after separation of copper concentrate from ROM, samples were found to contain 6.5 and 3.6 ppm gold, respectively. The mineralogical microscopic investigations of ROM samples confirmed that fine gold specks were scattered and encapsulated inside sulfide or quartz base minerals. This could explain the expected reason of the difficult leaching of gold by cyanidation. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the CIL feed contained quartz, pyrite, sphalerite and chlorite minerals. After detailed leaching studies of CIL feed, almost 70% of gold could be extracted at 0.2 M ammonium thiosulfate and 0.3 M ammonium hydroxide after 24 h. Addition of copper(II) as <0.2 mM only slightly enhanced the gold leaching in the ammoniacal thiosulfate solution. Gold leaching drastically decreased as the concentration of copper(II) increased 0.2 mM due to the degradation of S2O3²¯.

Opis:
A proposal of the nip zone angle determination in high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crush-ing process is presented in the paper. Knowledge of the nip zone angle value makes it possible to deter-mine the real maximum pressing force in the high-pressure comminution. Two methods of determination of this maximum pressure were proposed and verified. The first method is based on the roll’s geometry and the change of the HPGR chamber’s volume together with the roll rotation, while the second one considers the outlet gap width. Results of the nip zone angle calculations according to both methods are similar and show that the nip zone angle is around 3o. The verification was carried out in a piston-die press and experimental results show that the product size distributions from HPGR and piston-die press are similar. The methodology of the nip zone angle determination presented in the paper has then its practical confirmation. A proper determination of the nip zone border makes it possible to calculate the comminution probability of given type of material and is a basis for the HPGR crushing process modeling and optimization.

It was shown that flotation is influenced by the type and dose of frothers. The best flotation results were obtained with tri(propylene glycol) butyl ether C4P3, tri(propylene glycol) propyl ether C3P3 and tri(propylene glycol) P3. For these frothers, the yield vs. frother dose relationship was in the form of convex curves indicating that carbonaceous copper shale can float at relatively low dosages of the frother. It means that these frothers can be used for pre-flotation of carbonaceous matter from the investigated copper ore. Other frothers formed concave yield–frother dose relationships and were less effective.

Opis:
In this study, it was discovered that a mixture of dodecylamine (DDA)-kerosene demonstrated a stronger collecting ability for pure quartz and higher selectivity for magnetite ore. The relationship between the DDA-kerosene composition and mineral flotation performance on reverse flotation of magnetite ore was investigated. The results showed that floatability of the floating material increased when the DDA consumption increased. Specifically, during flotation, the fine particles (-0.074 mm fraction) selectively floated with DDA-kerosene. The difficult to float coarser particles (+0.074 mm fraction) with high content of quartz, required higher DDA dosage. However, higher DDA input during the flotation process did not necessarily yield better outcomes. The best results were obtained for 40/60 amine-to-oil ratio, as the quartz floated markedly with smaller magnetite loss and the flotation behavior was superior to pure DDA. Magnetite concentrates with 1.83% SiO2 and 71.04% Fe were produced using 120 g/Mg of DDA-kerosene (WDDA=40%).

The Cerattepe (Artvin) mine contains volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in northeastern Turkey. This is a kuroko type deposit located in Late Cretaceous volcanic, intrusive and sedimentary rocks, and has a structure with dense alteration stages. In this study, batch flotation tests were carried out to determine the flotation behavior of a new sample (mix ore), that was the combination of two different ores with different flotation behaviors. The mixed ore contains 2.18% Cu, 1.46% Zn, (Cu/Zn ratio 1.49) 38.35% Fe, and 41.6% S content. An efficient separation of copper minerals from zinc minerals using the conventional selective flotation method could not be achieved due to complex mineralogy and very low liberation degree. Therefore, sequential selective flotation resulted in poor Cu recovery. The effects of flotation parameters such as collector type, collector amount, particle size, and pH conditions, were investigated to obtain a bulk copper-zinc concentrate. The best results were obtained using thionocarbamate (Aero 3894) and dithiophosphine (Aerophine 3418A) collector reagents at d80=40 μm particle size. Under optimal conditions (grain size, d80=40 μm, pH=11, amount of collector reagent 60 g/t (Aero 3894), frother (MIBC)=50 g/t, solid ratio=32%, flotation time=8 min.), a bulk copper-zinc concentrate containing 13% Cu and 9.5% Zn was obtained with a copper yield of 84.4% and a zinc yield of 88.9%. The concentrate mass pull was 13%. After rougher and two-stage scavenger flotation, a concentrate (rougher concentrate + scavenger products) was obtained with a mass pull of 22%. Copper and zinc recoveries of this concentrate were 91.8% and 92.5%, respectively.

It was shown that the impact of chemical analysis on the selectivity parameters was small and the error determined by means of partial derivative approach for a copper ore upgraded by flotation was negligible. Also experimental errors were found to be insignificant. The largest errors occurred for approximation of the upgrading data with inadequately selected selectivity indicators.

Opis:
In this work, a role of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) in the flotation performance of a nickel ore was studied and mechanism was discussed in detail. The results showed that the presence of lizardite interferes with the flotation performance of pentlandite. The adsorption of SHMP at the lizardite/solution interface and the removal of magnesium ions from lizardite surface overcompensated the positive charge on the lizardite particle, and made its zeta potential negative. The interaction between lizardite and pentlandite changed from attractive to repulsive in the presence of SHMP. Thus, the addition of SHMP made the mixed sample of pentlandite and lizardite more dispersed, and significantly reduced the adverse effect of lizardite on the flotation of pentlandite. However, when the content of lizardite in the mixed ore was increased, the effect of SHMP weakened. Therefore, in flotation of a nickel ore containing a large amount of lizardite (46% w/w), SHMP usage is not suitable at the roughing stage due to the fact that lizardite in the pulp will consume most of the SHMP, and hence the removal of lizardite slimes from pentlandite surface become impossible. Based upon the results, SHMP usage is found to be suitable at the cleaning stage to improve the grade of concentrate.

Opis:
The high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology is currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore comminution from the scope of the energy consumption. Throughput and energetic models of performance are quite well developed, but technological models predicting the comminution effects still needs an in-depth research. In the paper author presents the method of modeling of HPGR products’ particle size distribution by using suitable mathematical models. A basis of the HPGR perfor-mance assessment and HPGR-based crushing circuits design is a product’s particle size distribution. In order to precisely determine the particle size distribution of a HPGR product, parameters of product’s particle size distributions should be conditional on the main technical parameters of the roller press like operating pressure and the speed of rolls. The most accurate approximation of a distribution of size parti-cle appears to be Weibull’s truncated distribution and it is possible to obtain significant relationships between the approximation formula and the value of operating pressure, or feed characteristics. It makes possible a determination of mass recoveries of the product’s respective size fractions and the productivity planning. Instead of pressure, the other HPGR operating parameters can be applied, but the pressure value appears to produce the most relevant relationship. A determination of HPGR product’s particle size dis-tribution is a basis of the press operation simulation analysis.
