Opis:
The objective of the presented study was to investigate the usefulness of transparent, sintered yttrium oxide for application as optical isolators, i.e., materials with high Verdet constant. The study utilizes the magneto-optical Faraday effect. To obtain yttrium oxide sinters, a commercial Y2O3 powder was applied, with LiF added to facilitate sintering. As a result of hot-press sintering and heating, transparent, dense sinters were obtained. The structure and morphology of the powders and bulk samples and the optical properties of the latter were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, visible and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy, and a study of magneto-optical (Faraday) effects. Measurements of the Faraday effect in the wavelength range of 500–1000 nm indicate high Verdet constants for the above-described materials, which means that they can be effectively applied in laser optics.

We proposed to design a tunable multichannel optical filter composed of uniaxial indefinite metamaterial and dielectric photonic crystal categories arrangement, which can be employed as a valuable variation of peak transmission in microwave frequency. Because of the optical axis and polarization dependence of the uniaxial metamaterial layer, the position trend in the multichannel optical filter is shown to also rely on both TE and TM polarizations. The numerical results show that by changes of the incidence angle, width of photonic band gap (PBG) compacts (widens) at TE (TM) polarization and the PBG of the structure shifts towards the higher frequency region, for both polarizations. In addition, the multichannel optical filter properties and shift trend of the PBG are also affected by changing the optical axis of the uniaxial indefinite metamaterial. Thus, results shown that without appending defect layer in this structure, the sets of comb-like resonant peaks in transmission modes can be utilized in the lower or higher band edge of PBG at TE and TM polarizations.

In this work, the authors present the results of optical characterization of GaAs-based multiple quantum well heterostructures, together with energy band structure analysis. The optical properties were investigated by applying photoluminescence spectroscopy. Structures with GaInNAs, GaInAs and GaNAs multiple quantum wells emitting around 1 μm, grown by atmospheric pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy, were compared in this work. The role of nitrogen in quantum well carriers confinement potential was analysed. The photoluminescence intensities of the samples were correlated with the analysis of energy band structures and the overlaps of the carriers’ wave functions. In addition, the main carrier activation energies were estimated based on photoluminescence temperature dependence and the Arrhenius plots analysis. It was deduced that the thermal photoluminescence decay is most probably related to the escape of electrons whereas the holes, independently of the potential well depth, are additionally confined by the local inhomogeneities or by the Coulomb interaction with the confined electrons.

Opis:
Saturation of complex molecules affects the nonlinear processes occurring in the medium. The medium can be described by two-, three-, and four-level configurations. The principal singlet-singlet and excited triplet-triplet channels of a four-level, N-type, configuration were used to study a nonlinear medium, which was excited by radiation with two frequencies. Under weak population of energy levels in the triplet-triplet channel (a small ratio of the total probability of spontaneous and irradiate transitions for both channels p23/p31), the principal (singlet-singlet) channel is similar to a two-level configuration. At the same time, the effective population of the energy levels in the triplet-triplet channel (the ratio p23/p31 is large and the radiation intensity in the principal channel is high) makes the excited (triplet-triplet) channel coincide with the two-level configuration. The saturation intensity of radiation in principal (excited) channel, as effective two-level configuration, and nonlinear processes in this channel can be controlled by external radiation acting on excited (principal) channel. Finally, the average excitation of molecules into the energy levels in the triplet-triplet channel (ratio p23/p31 ≈ 1) makes the four-level configuration similar to the three-level configuration with effective level as a result of combination between second singlet level S2 and first triplet level T1.

Opis:
A state-of-the-art fabrication of Y2O3 transparent ceramic by arc plasma synthesis using commercial micron-size powders is reported. The morphological observations of the surface by scanning electron microscope shows that a dense microstructure can be obtained. Arc melted samples are made of a white core and transparent layer. X-ray diffraction studies and also Raman spectroscopy confirm that only one phase occurred in the core and in the transparent layer, and that the physicochemical difference exists. The obtained Y2O3 shell ceramics have pores but also relative low absorbance in the VIS-NIR region after double side polishing. The optical band gap and the refractive index are reported. It is concluded that arc plasma melting allows obtaining quickly (10 minutes) dense and highly transparent polycrystalline samples, especially in the VIS-IR spectral region.

Opis:
The necessity to develop an optode array in order to probe the fetus oxygenation noninvasively regardless of the fetus position has been highlighted in previous literature. In this paper, a series of optical simulations are carried out to determine the best representation of optode array by using optical properties at systolic and diastolic states. The selection is based on the highest flux values accumulated at respective detectors. To accomplish the objective, a homogenous three-layer semi-infinite tissue model is implemented to represent the pregnant woman model. The geometry of the model as well as Monte Carlo simulation are carried out using commercial software, whereas the optical properties related to systolic and diastolic states are defined for all wavelengths. A statistical noise analysis is also introduced in order to find a sufficient number of rays to be launched into the optical tissue system.

The results of calculations using local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation: the total energy depending on the volume of the unit cell, the distribution of the total density of states and the partial contributions of electronic orbitals in the band structure of Tl4CdI6 and Tl4HgI6 crystals are shown in this paper. The spectra of the real part of the dielectric permittivity, the spectra of the imaginary part of permittivity, the reflection spectra and the absorption coefficient of both crystals are obtained using the Kramers–Kronig method. A comparative analysis of theoretical calculations with experimental data is carried out. Substantial influence of electron–phonon broadening is shown.

Opis:
Back side p+ emitter thin silicon solar cells have been constructed using vapor phase epitaxy. Double porous structure on a c-Si substrate was used as a seed substrate in order to enable active layer separation after vapor phase epitaxy growth. Structure of the back side emitter solar cell was obtained in situ during the epitaxy process. In order to enhance solar cell response to light from a range of 700–1200 nm wavelength, the back side dielectric mirror was developed and optimized by means of a computer simulation and deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. At the same time, a reference sample was fabricated. Comparison of solar cells performance with or without the back side mirror was performed and clearly shows that the quality of solar light conversion into the electricity by means of solar cells, can be improved by using the structure proposed in this article.

Opis:
Ultraviolet-curable hybrid light-diffusing films with good optical, mechanical and thermal properties were prepared by involving vinyl-silane-modified nano-silica into light-diffusing films. The light-diffusing films were two-phase materials consisting of UV-curable matrix and light-diffusing agent. The effect of three different light-diffusing agents, viz. inorganic layered particle (CaCO3), spherical acrylic resin (MR-7HG) and organosilicone resin (KMP-590) and their contents, on the optical properties of light-diffusing films was studied. The results showed the light-diffusing film exhibited good optical properties (the transmittance was 90.7% and the haze was 95.5%) when KMP-590 was a light-diffusing agent and its content was 25%. It was because that KMP-590 showed good transparency, good dispersion in the UV-curable matrix and the greater difference in refractive index with UV-curable matrix and polycarbonate substrate. Furthermore, the effect of nano-silica on the optical, mechanical and thermal properties of the hybrid light-diffusing films was investigated. Compared to that of the light-diffusing films without nano-silica, the haze of the hybrid light-diffusing films containing nano-silica was lightly enhanced to above 98%, while their transmittance basically remained unchanged at a high value (above 89%). Additionally, scratch and abrasion resistance of the hybrid films were obviously improved by nano-silica especially with the particle size of 10–15 nm. Furthermore, the mechanical property and thermal stability of the hybrid films were improved as the content of nano-silica with the particle size of 10–15 nm increased. The enhanced mechanical property and thermal stability of the films could be attributed to the dense structure induced by the increase in network density with the addition of vinyl-silane-modified nano-silica.

In this article a theoretical research is described into focusing of a linearly polarized helico-conical Lorentz beam with a sine-azimuthal variation wavefront. The simulation results show the vortex charge on the axis, which has an obvious modulation effect on the focal modes of the Lorenz beam under certain beam parameters and phase parameters. Both the phase parameter and the vortex charge are zero, the focal spot appears round. The focal spot is symmetric about y axis when the charge is 0 and the phase parameter is adjusted. And the focal evolution patterns vary remarkably under different beam parameters and the phase parameters. In the process of focus evolution, there appears some novel focal patterns, such as a circle, a “T”, a butterfly, a small running humanoid, a whale tail, a flower of four leaves, a serpentine, a goldfish, a Chinese knot and an octopus, which indicates that the focus mode of the optical vortex Lorentz beam can be altered by changing the phase parameters and vortex charge.
