Opis:
In this paper we present the investigation aimed at the photoresist roughness change determination as a reliable estimator of the exposition rate in the processing verification in semiconductor industry. By employing atomic force microscopy as the 3D high resolution surface imaging tool, we tested twelve popular photoresists in terms of the morphological properties changes, while the following radiation doses were applied. Basing on high precision, and repetitive sample positioning, it was possible to perform the tests with high degree of confidence and observe the roughness change dynamics. Various profiles of roughness changes were observed, showing the need for individual study of each material. Moreover, it was possible to select the photoresists which due to poor homogeneity and small roughness changes are not suitable to such a verification. According to our knowledge, no such study was performed so far.

Opis:
The vascular cannulation is associated with a number of complications. The aim of this work was to study the composition and distribution of the film covering the surfaces of Mahurkar Maxid and Palindrome catheters, which were removed from the body of long-term hemodialysis patients. Moreover, the roughness and contact angle of the catheters were evaluated. Methods: Two brand new (as a reference) and thirty used catheters were the subject of the study. Their implantation period lasted from 4 months to a year and the reason for removal was the production of another vascular access or obstruction. Surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope and goniometer. Results: The inner surfaces of the used catheters were covered with a film of various complexity which includes a plurality of protein, blood cell counts and the crystals. The closer to the distal part the film becomes more complex and multi-layered. Even the surfaces of brand new catheter were not completely smooth. The only significant difference between analyzed models was the presence of thrombus in the distal part of Mahurkar Maxid catheters, not in the Palindrome. Conclusions: The distal part of the catheters is the place most exposed to obstruction and infection, which may be due to not reaching the anticoagulant agent into this part. Not only the occurrence of side holes affects the formation of thrombus, but also their quantity, geometry and distribution which effect on fluid mechanics. The surface of the catheters needs to improvement to minimize the occurrence of defects and cracks.

Opis:
Colemanite crystal specimens were handpicked at Kestelek, Emet (Hisarcik, Espey), Bigadic mines in Turkey for characterization of their composition and surface potential. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed no differences in mineralogical makeup of the crystals, but elemental analysis indicated differences in the type of trace (<0.1 wt%) elements. Zeta potential measurements showed small differences in zeta potential values, with isoelectric points (iep) varying from about pH = 9.6 to pH = 10.2. However, no correlation was found between iep and the type of trace elements. Additionally, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to measure the colloidal interactions between a silicon nitride (Si3N4) cantilever tip and colemanite crystal surfaces in 1 wt% colemanite-saturated aqueous solutions at three different pHs (8.4, 9.4 and 11). The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory (DLVO) was applied to examine the AFM tip interactions with colemanite surfaces in an aqueous solution of colemanite saturated solutions. The results revealed attractive forces at pH = 8.4 and 9.4 and repulsive forces at pH = 11, confirming the location of an isoelectric point for colemanite specimens somewhere between pH = 9.5 and pH = 10.1. Theoretical analysis of the force curves using the DLVO theory allowed for assessment of both surface charge density and surface potential for colemanite specimens used in this study.

The surface roughness of the dental restorations is significant to the denture plaque adhesion. Methods: In this work, we present the complex analysis of the electropolished CoCrW alloy remanium® star (Dentaurum, Germany) samples with laserengraved fiducial marks performed using complementary set of micro- and nanoscopic techniques: optical profilometry (OP), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) milling. Results: Both mean and RMS roughness of the samples were reduced by electopolishing process, however, the results obtained using OP and AFM exhibited some discrepancies. This was caused by the relatively high local protruding defects developed on the processed surface. The cross-sections of the protrusions were made to analyze the cause of their formation as the EDS elemental content maps revealed that their composition was uniform. We also analyzed the local roughness in the smaller areas free from the defects. Conclusions: In that case, both OP and AFM techniques delivered the same results. Analysis of results showed that various methods used for the surface roughness evaluation have to be used simultaneously to obtain complete and true analysis of the technological CoCrW samples.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to qualitatively assess the outcomes of two in vitro aging methods, thermal-cycling and twobody wear simulation accomplished with a dual-axis chewing device, on the surface characteristics of eight direct and indirect dental resin biocomposites. Methods: Eighty mesial-occlusal-distal dental cavities were restored with four direct nanohybrid composite materials and with four nano- and micro-hybrid lab-fabricated resin composite inlays. After the restored teeth were subjected to thermal-cycling and wear simulation based on mechanical loading, the surface texture features of the restorations were separately analysed for each of the methods, on epoxy resin models using a digital camera, computer-aided-design system, optical stereo-microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results: All the dental restorative resin based composites used in this investigation displayed different cyclic wear patterns after undergoing mechanical loading. After thermal-cycling, the group of resin composite inlays showed a better adaptation, a smoother and more polished occlusal surface compared with direct restorative materials. Only two of direct nanohybrid resin composites performed better after two aging methods. One nanohybrid and the other two microhybrid resin inlays did not perform as expected when they were subjected to simulated wear compared to the rest of test materials. Conclusions: The use of the two-body wear simulation method revealed important information about the behavior of the dental resin-based composites when multiple oral factors are involved in a lab-simulated condition. Furthermore, the macro- and micro-morphological analysis showed different abrasion patterns among the materials being tested according to the filler percentage and distribution of the particles within the resin matrix.

To overcome the depth-of-field limitation of an optical microscope image, a three-dimensional measurement method with a superior depth-of-field is proposed. In the proposed method, light-field information of different angles is obtained by moving the aperture and the three-dimensional scene is reconstructed by using a computational reconstruction technology. First, stereo matching of different aperture position images is performed to obtain the multi-aperture imaging deviation. The focal plane moving distance is thereby estimated. Then, the relational expression between the image coordinates and the focal plane moving distance is determined according to the image coordinates. Two dimensional coordinates of the space point are obtained by the expression coefficients. Finally, the depth coordinates are computed, and three-dimensional reconstruction of the spatial points is completed. Experiments of three-dimensional measurements of the calibration board with different angles and circuit boards are conducted. The results show that the maximum error of the distance measurement is controlled into 0.84%, and the maximum angle measurement error is controlled into 4.56%.

Opis:
The investigation of the surface properties changes at micrometer and nanometer scale, due to the presence of various factors such as: temperature, solar radiation or magnetic field, requires suitable diagnostic methods. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is one of the most popular measurement techniques providing necessary resolution. As complex experiments may require multiple moving of the sample between instruments and AFM, one can find quantitative comparison of the results unreliable when the measurements are performed without precise positioning of investigated surface and different areas are analyzed. In this work, the utilization of the nanoscratching method in terms of development of the nanomarkers set is presented, as the solution for precise positioning of the sample in order to perform the multi-step imaging of small surface area (1 μm×1 μm). Various materials were used to verify the versatility of the developed method. Also, the observation of the influence of the UV radiation on the polycarbonate sample was demonstrated as the example proving the application potential of the approach.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was used in the chemical reduction using sodium borohydride to yield dispersive nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles as reactive and stable adsorbents. CMC- -stabilized nZVI particles were characterized via UV-visible light spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and specific surface area assisted using a probe ultrasonication dispersing tool at 50% amplitude power. High catalytic reactivity obtained in pseudo-first order reaction for Cr6+ (rate constant K1 = 0.0311 min–1) and pseudo-second order for Cu2+ (rate constant K2 = 0.0946 g·mg–1·min–1) indicated that colloidal stability of nZVI particles can be achieved with a stabilizer for the removal of toxic contaminants.

Opis:
In this study, multiscale advancing contact angles for glycerol/water drops at silica surfaces are reported for millidrops, submicron-drops, and nanodrops. Selected silica surfaces were muscovite, silicon, and talc. The contact angles for millidrops (1–2 mm) were determined by the traditional sessile drop technique. For submicron-drops (0.1–1.0 μm), a hollow tip Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) procedure was used. The contact angles for nanodrops (~7 nm) were examined from Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. The results were compared to evaluate the effect of drop size on the contact angle. In the case of the hydrophobic talc surface, the 75° advancing contact angle did not vary significantly with drop size. For the hydrophilic muscovite surface, the water drop wet the surface and an advancing contact angle of about 10° was found for the millidrops and submicron-drops. However, for the MD simulated nanodrops, attachment and spreading of the ~7 nm drop created a 2D film of molecular dimensions, the contact angle of which was difficult to define and varied from 0° to 17°. Perhaps of equal interest from the MD simulation results was that the spreading of the glycerol/water nanodrop at the muscovite surface resulted in crystallographic directional transport of water molecules to the extremities of the 2D film. Such separation and segregation left the center of the film with an increased concentration of glycerol. Based on these results, the line tension, which has been found in other investigations to account for contact angle decrease with a decrease in drop size, does not seem to be a significant factor in this study.

Opis:
This work presents an automated segmentation method, based on graph theory, which processes superpixels that exhibit spatially similarities in hue and texture pixel groups, rather than individual pixels. The graph shortest path includes a chain of neighboring superpixels which have minimal intensity changes. This method reduces graphics computational complexity because it provides large decreases in the number of vertices as the superpixel size increases. For the starting vertex prediction, the boundary pixel in first column which is included in this starting vertex is predicted by a trained deep neural network formulated as a regression task. By formulating the problem as a regression scheme, the computational burden is decreased in comparison with classifying each pixel in the entire image. This feasibility approach, when applied as a preliminary study in electron microscopy and optical coherence tomography images, demonstrated high measures of accuracy: 0.9670 for the electron microscopy image and 0.9930 for vitreous/nerve-fiber and inner-segment/outer-segment layer segmentations in the optical coherence tomography image.

In this research, an attempt was made to investigate effects of expanded perlite aggregate grain size on consistency, density, compressive strength, thermal conductivity and microstructure of 15 different composite mixes with silica aerogel. As for the samples preparation, expanded perlite aggregate of 5 different groups based on grain size, were used for sample preparation, then partially replaced by volume for 20% and 40% of hydrophobic silica aerogel particles. The results showed, that density of the samples varied between 0.35 g/cm3 and 1.5 g/cm3, flexural strength varied between 3.4 MPa and 7.4 MPa, compressive strength was in the range between 12.3 MPa and 55 MPa, thermal conductivity coefficient was in the range between 0.130 W/mK and 0.190 W/mK. Scanning electron microscopy showed that expanded perlite aggregates and silica aerogel particles are capable of being mixed and formed homogenous mixture. Nevertheless, microscope images indicated weaker adhesion of silica aerogel particles at interfacial zone as compared with expanded perlite aggregate particles. Results revealed, that both of the factors: grain size of expanded perlite aggregate particles silica aerogel content influenced the density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity. The study also indicated feasibility of expanded perlite aggregate and silica aerogel for achieving homogeneous mixture of the lightweight cementitious composites. Study demonstrated that using different size fractions of expanded perlite aggregate affects differently physical, mechanical and thermal characteristics of the lightweight cementitious composite with silica aerogel.

WO3 modified TiO2 nanotube array (WO3/TNAs) photoelectrodes were fabricated via electrochemical deposition on TNAs/Ti photoelectrodes. The morphology and structure of WO3/TNAs photoelectrodes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The effects of deposition potential, deposition duration, NaWO4 concentration, and calcination temperature on the morphology and the photocatalytic activity were investigated. The results showed that suitable amounts of WO3 promoted the photocatalytic activity of TNAs photoelectrodes for the degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP). The optimal conditions for the fabrication of WO3/TNAs photoelectrodes were as follows: deposition voltage 3.0 V, 10 min deposition duration, 0.01 mol/dm3 Na2WO4 concentration, 1.5 cm electrode gap, and 550 °C annealing temperature. The degradation rate of DMP reached 77% after 60 min of illumination by WO3/TNAs photoelectrode. Additionally, WO3/TNA photoelectrodes possessed superb stability for maintaining a high DMP degradation efficiency at more than 75% after 10 times of successive use with 60 min irradiation for each cycle. The enhancement of photocatalytic performance by the efficient combination of WO3 with TNAs would provide a theoretical basis for the practical application of WO3/TNA photoelectrodes in water treatment.

The article contains studies of micro- and domain structures obtained using atomic/magnetic force microscopy (AFM/MFM) of melt-spun Sm12.5Fe8Co65.5Zr1Cu13 thin ribbons in the as-cast state. In order to obtain the SmCo8.5 type of structure in the Sm–Fe–Co–Zr–Cu alloy, thin ribbons were manufactured using the melt-spinning method with large linear velocity of a copper wheel and proper selection of alloying elements. The obtained samples in the as-cast state were magnetized. The microscopic results were also supported by magnetic measurements performed on a vibrating sample magnetometer as well as by a quantitative analysis of phase composition obtained using the Rietveld refinement method.
